I'm thinking in general they're not: just there to look impressive.  Not
just restricted to analog/'pointer' meters: saw one TV commercial 
recently which had a vertical VU meter: pulsing was rhythmic but 
definitely not to the soundtrack -- was just the same pattern repeated, 
even during the quieer parts.
