One of my tests indicated the same: I had uploaded a reply and put a 
text smiley face at the end.  Somewhere along the line it was converted
to the emoji.  That one item switched modes from SMS (text) to MMS
(graphical)

At least they gave how to correct the issue!

I've received e-mails with that kind of attachment, and the e-mail is 
displayed properly.
