Yes, keeping stuff separate makes sense.  Lately I have been putting the
OS on a SSD to speed things up and the data on a hard drive (preferably 
7200 RPM).
                   
Backups are to a NAS, with selected 'very important to me' files on an 
external hard drive so I can grab-and-go if necessary.  The backups are 
in whatever condensed format it is using; the selected files are plain- 
text copies.  (Wrong term, but not condensed -- are xcopy/rsync.)
