If there was a memory set-aside it happened in the kernel and was 
insignificant.

Makes exactly zero difference at user level.

Right now the DOS machine has old drives in it that are partitioned C 
through K. DOS doesn't notice, it just dutifully spits up the one I want.

W: was the reserved network drive, tho, and my understanding was you 
could cause yourself problems if you tried to use it as a local drive 
letter.

Nowadays X: is where boot-to-RAM Windows puts itself (eg. Hiren's Boot CD).
