Subj : Eggs! To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Wed Nov 13 2019 11:08:00 Hi Nancy! A nice warm 17ø out there this morning! May get a dusting of snow early evening. Wonder how that relates to "six inches of partly cloudy"? BM>> Remember seeing Eggland's Best (and thinking how expensive they were) BM>> but not anything hard-cooked much less peeled. And now with the BM>> construction and remodelling they seem to have cut back on some of the BM>> deliveries, either that or mass-grab of certain groceries as empty BM>> spots on the shelves. The Great Peeled and Ready-To-Eat Egg Hunt may BM>> have to continue after the store is done updating - though I am keeping BM>> my eye out for them and any other interesting-looking and within the BM>> splurge budget items. NB>> True, they may well have cut back on some of their choices/inventory NB>> to make the moves around the store a little easier... and/or not added NB>> choices until the update is completed... :) BM> Right: everything has to go somewhere. Two things can not occupy the BM> same space. NB> True... :) At least not easily, could be squished together, or NB> on top of each other... ;) Right: there are possible ways to tightly mingle but so appears occupying the same space. Dad had sometimes used that to remind me about driving. Not due to an accident but a way to avoid them. BM> And probably gets a lot more complicated with the legal stuff: heard BM> the suppliers buy space on the shelves. Probably not only space but BM> locations. So if they have bought 10' of floor space (rack) can't just BM> give them 8' and the other 2' to someone else. (I'd suppose there are BM> clauses to cover remodels, damage to the racks/shelves, etc. Temporary BM> situations.) NB> I'd guess it would be more of a rental than an outright buy... NB> but yes, the vendors would expect to have their allotted NB> space(s)... and probably that sort of thing would be moved as a NB> block, and possibly with the vendor involved with the NB> relocation.... "Rental" or "lease" would probably be the more correct term, or at least as far as what us non-grocery types understand. As for the vendor involvment, thinking two ways. One is the temporary reduction in allocation while the moving/remodelling is going on. Other is the physicl assistance in movign the product. Thinking how in Produce AFAIK the Hy-Vee staff restocks, moves, etc., the Driscoll berries, Dole salads, etc., but the Frito Lay guy is there daily to restock his brand's chips, so would he be the one doing the move? Stay tuned for the next episode to find if Frito Lay guy will move his chips. Will a mysterious Dole man suddenly appear to the Salad House? Will ... GAAAH!!!!> NB>>> Taking up less room can be very important, especially in a full NB>>> fridge... ;) BM>> Yes, not that the refrigerator is packed and need every spare square BM>> inch but when organized don't have to look around - for the item not BM>> space to put the item. Naturally if there's an empty space something BM>> tends to go there, but to put away a platter or bowl doesn't take too BM>> much to create room. NB>> There are times I do have to be creative to get everything in... NB>> especially when putting away the new groceries.... BM> Here too. "Worst" time seems to be around Thanksgiving and Christmas BM> with the foods. A 20+ pound turkey takes up a lot of freezer then BM> refrigerator space! Moving around, stacking, and sometimes not BM> stocking up of items. You know the routine. :) NB> Yup.... And with it just being the two of us, I've dispensed NB> with getting the whole turkeys... A package of turkey thighs NB> works well for us... and doesn't take up an excessive amount of NB> space, either... :) A different situation also for the rest of NB> the feast, since there won't be space needed for what others are NB> bringing, or for things being made ahead... one can make a pretty NB> sumptuous feast in a lot smaller space when it's only two NB> people... We generally host one and sometimes both of the holiday meals, primarily because we have the Dining Room space, and two ovens (there's one in the eventually-will-be-a-kitchenette in the basement), so a larger turkey. If "an intimate holiday meal experience for two" (darn advertising hooks!) I'll usually get a two-pack of Cornish Game Hens. BM>> Which reminds me (thanks!): for some reason last week my electronic BM>> notification was showing I had a prescription refill in progress but BM>> wan't ready to pick up -- which made sense as I had enough pills to BM>> last through the end of this week. Just checked and nothing showing. BM>> Way too early to call so will later this morning. NB>> I trust you were able to get the new refill before you did run out... BM> Yes and no. Yes, they did have the refill approved: I had no refills BM> left, switched medical doctors and the zero refills got overlooked but BM> not in time for when I was at the pharmacy. A day or two later was BM> filled but I had other things going on and so stretched what I had on BM> hand. NB> At least it worked out ok in the end.... :) Yes. And the third one is ready for tomorrow's shopping. (Pharmacy within Hy-Vee.) ...Actually good thing I checked Monday night: no 'in progress', which seemed odd. Checked a little deeper: all the automatic refills had been turned off! Turned back on, did a request to fill the one I'm almost out of; checked later and saw 'in progress'. Recall that's happened once or twice before over the last few years; always seem to have been associated with a doctor having to be involved. Just keep an eye on things. BM>> Reminds me of last week: Hy-Vee has a on-line shopping app and one or BM>> more will shop with a hand scanner which both scans the item as found BM>> and its location. One was commenting during our chit-chat the BM>> computer hadn't updated yet as to where some of the items were though BM>> she knew where they were moved to a few days ago. NB>> I think this might have been a special app that was being updated as NB>> things moved, just so that their customer service wouldn't suffer.... NB>> I suspect the regular online app might not have been totally NB>> up-to-date, though.... ;) BM> She (the lady I was talking to with the hand scanner picking the BM> on-line shopper's groceries) indicated it was a location app for BM> employee use only. The customer app doesn't have the locations. Could BM> be all kinds of guesses as to why their location app wasn't current. NB> Your reset is probably more extensive, and possibly more in flux NB> because of the renovations... Possible that Wegmans had planned a NB> lot of the moves ahead of time, too... I know that their NB> customer app does show locations usually, so it would have needed NB> updating as well... not that I've actually used it, but I've seen NB> the blurbs for and about it... Well, Hy-Vee does have a product locator for customers. Testing: Garlic ==> Aisle side of store near aisle 3 (Spices) Aisle 6 (Spice) Nothing about fresh garlic nor the jar. Not sure what that first descriptor is supposed to mean. Swiss cheese ==> Aisle 18 (Cheese) Aisle Deli (International cheese Upc) No idea what a 'Upc' is. ...Wonder if the first "Aisle" is hard-coded in the location lines? The sentence responses tend to make more sense without that word. This is the first time I've played with that portion of their app. Thinking it's a semi-recent addition. As for the degree of remodelling, my Hy-Vee is undergoing a 100% rennovation. Well, not the actual skeleton of the building but just about everything else. BM>> As for re-rememorizing the store, I'll probably do something like BM>> that, though sort of update my mental map constantly and maybe more BM>> generically than what you did. Last week I was looking for a small BM>> can of evaporated milk; know it's going to be in with baking stuff so BM>> either looked for that overhead sign or remembered where it was one my BM>> initial wanderings. NB>> Some things are still in the same category as they've been, just moved NB>> to a totally different place.... others, though, have been moved into a NB>> new category.... the thing we'd found near pharmacy used to be with the NB>> Nature's Marketplace (natural foods) and/or with the Breakfast Bars NB>> near the cereals.... it had been moved near the pharmacy to create a NB>> new section of meal supplements (sports, snacks, Boost/Ensure-type NB>> drinks, etc).... Nature's Marketplace they abolished, and mainstreamed NB>> those goods, except for a gluten-free section... They moved the entire NB>> beer section to where there used to be sodas, moved the sodas down the NB>> aisle to where the waters used to be, and moved the waters to where the NB>> beer had been, next to produce... I'll get used to that, eventually.. :) BM> Just don't go picking up Root Beer thinking it was regular beer! NB> Or vice versa... No, not much chance of that... ;) Just have to NB> think of getting water, and juice (another thing that was shifted NB> somewhat earlier in the store), at an earlier part of the NB> shopping scheme... :) Or have to keep back-tracking.... BM> Yes, I suspect some items I will be searching for. I think where BM> Hy-Vee currently has their health/energy sections will become a BM> Starbucks, which is sort of interesting as their in-store restarant and BM> deli shops is the opposite side (west side of the store vs. east). BM> Stay tuned! NB> Now that seems like a waste of space to me... ;) Our store has NB> it's own coffee area, no need for a commercial extra entity... ;) People like their Starbucks! LIS not an attraction for me, but then I don't spend all day at a mall shopping. Sit and lounge?? OK, I have sat, but that was more to adjust a sock or shoe tongue and back on the way. Snack at the pretzel shop? Yes, but only because someone else we were with insisted. Hy-Vee does have a restaurant area but haven't eaten at that particular one. Have at a different store and quite good. BM> No idea where the health shops will go. Those aisles widths do need BM> to be expanded. ...Thinking all sorts of possibilities which are too BM> complicated to try to explain in text. NB> It appears that part of the shifting in Wegmans was to widen the NB> aisles a little... the racks themselves have shifted in a lot of NB> cases, and there are now more of the half-length aisles again... Half-length aisles could be handy! So far haven't seen any at Hy-Vee; Produce does have table and islands, and looks like will expand on that. Will see what the rest of the store does. NB>>> One can hope that those that make the decisions have some idea what is NB>>> what... but it's not always the case... I did see some of those LED NB>>> lights on the edges of the doors in the frozen department at a Publix NB>>> in the Raleigh NC area earlier this year... reminded me of Christmas NB>>> lights... ;) BM>> "What idiot ordered the multi-coloured lights?! And stop that BM>> twinkling!!" As far as looking like Christmas lights - yes, the BM>> small bulbs. NB>> These were all white, of course... but that's one of the Christmas NB>> options.... :) BM> And some whites are a cream-white, or a gray-white, a blue-white, or BM> that annoying blinding-white. NB> These at least weren't too annoying... Just the blinding-white ones. NB>>> Probably just not realizing the benefits of the old tech... ;) BM>> There are some advantages! Bet everyone was focused on the power BM>> savings (less cost) they overlooked that little detail. I remember BM>> there were a couple of mentions in various articles on how the traffic BM>> lights could working during a power failure because there would be a BM>> UPS inside the traffic control box. I think they forgot the relays and BM>> computer would have to be powered also. NB>> Minor details, of course.... ;) BM> And most around here are interconnected to keep the traffic flowing BM> smoothly, so now need to include the equipment in the network. ...It BM> started off some simple! NB> And grew like topsy... ;) It sounded good at the beginning! ...If the UPS in the traffic control box just ran the immediate set of lights at flashing (4-way flashing red) would still create a traffic tie-up but I'm thinking no different than if the traffic lights were out completely. So no need for an individual location UPS. Maybe in some locations would make sense to have a backup power source. NB> ...
