Yes, I've used the coax switches, KVM switches. and serial port switches
around here.  (Three separate types of switch boxes.) 

Had two serial switch boxes between my two XTs and the DEC Rainbow 100.  
If I wanted to use the mouse on the XT was one set of positions, 
transfer data from one computer to the other another switch posiion, use
the modem yet another; must have been another two or three options!
