He probably goes to the same two or three restaurants where he is known,
so the staff has become his surrogate family and friends.  They wait on 
him (which he craves), maybe slide a free dessert or beverage every so 
often to cheer him up....

As for the cost of eating out, one of my bosses when I was working at
the college was single and ate out constantly.  He claimed it was
overall cheaper than preparing the meal at home.  He lived in an
apartment (at the time so did I), so don't have to include the cost of a
refrigerator and stove....  Personally I generally liked the 'doing 
something different' of cooking -- take a break from studying or 
building/repair of the current electronics project, etc.
