Actually, HOSTS is a redirect list. Which means you can blacklist 
certain sites by directing them to the local loopback address. 
Effectively, it IS a blacklist. It is the opposite of a trusted-sites list.

The HOSTS file I use nixes pretty much the entire advertising world, and 
nearly all the malware:

127.0.0.1  *.similarweb.com

and several thousand other entries, some of which I've found I need 
active, so they're altered to suit. And a couple dozen I've added for 
one reason or another.


A host is a host from coast to coast
And no one will talk to a host that's close
Unless the host (that isn't close)
is busy, hung or dead.
