When I have to type on the phone (something I avoid as much as possible) 
I use a little rubber-tipped stylus. They're about six bucks at Walmart 
(and usually include a pen and a laser, why I don't know). It's about a 
third the size of a finger and doesn't dribble over onto adjacent 
virtual keys.
