Subj : Various Things (1) To : Daryl Stout From : Barry Martin Date : Thu Mar 02 2023 08:29:00 Hi Daryl! BM> Also have a few Raspberry Pi's: clone the SD Card for backup -- being BM> able to pull the card I just screwd up for the back up has saved my BM> rump numerous times! DS> There are so many "flavors" of Pi's nowadays, it's pathetic. As DS> I've noted before, I don't know much about a raspberry pi, but a DS> pineapple upside down cheesecake sounds rather good right now. Right now it's just after breakfast and it that cheesecake would not stand a chance! As for the Raspberry Pi's, yes, quite a few but part of the reasoning is compatability. Intended as an inexpensive option to get kids computers (originally something like $5 - $35 -- and grab extra keyboards, mice) they were also used by business: some applications didn't need a $500 computer to do something like an assembly line process, And so it was found the $5 and $10 versions of the Raspnerry Pi were more than capable. So what's this got to do with compatibility? Stuff wears out, gets damaged. I'm guessing sometimes there is a lack of extra space and so a RPi Pico which is around half the width of a deck of cards cannot be replaced by the current RPi 4 which is about the size of a deck of cards. And so the Raspberry Pi folks made the decision to keep the old models. BM> Oftentimes yes. As I said above I tend to re-use hardware, some of BM> which would be able to attend elementary school if it were human. As BM> for purchasing new, I try to stay with those manufacturers who have BM> proven themselves: spend a little more now for quality saves re-buying BM> later. DS> It's also "you get what you pay for". Right. There are times when the cheap version would be satisfactory, of course. I have some 'yuck!' keyboards -- some came with a computer. Those keyboards had a bad feel but for a while I was using them with the MythTV Frontends if that computer refused to boot with just a wireless keyboard. Plugged in the junk keyboard, stored it behind the computer. Boot: "I see that junk keyboard and so will continue booting and load the wireless keyboard eventually". DS> Or the woman who was angry at the hospital staff, who she DS> thought they had said her Mom was crazy...because "bananas" was DS> on her records...it was for her diet, not her state of mind. Good test of motor skills: grasp the banana without squishing, removal of the peel. Maybe also cognative: don't discard on to the tile floor! BM> I've flown numerous times and so far so good! DS> You must've bought it from ACME. In the 70's I flew on a few 'puddle jumpers' BM> I'll admit to trying to avoid the wait, though 'traffic light' is about BM> the only one I risk. Some yellows are a little short. Trying to beat BM> a train - uh-ugh! - though the good news is in my normal travels I BM> rarely encounter a train crossing. DS> Since I quit driving 9 months ago, I still hear the trains 1/4 DS> mile away at the grade crossing. But, I think most yellow lights DS> are only 3-4 seconds at most. I've not timed but one lately seems like only two seconds: seems like I get the very start of the yellow arrow (for the turn) and I don't make it through the intersection before the signal is red. If I slam on my brakes for the yellow I'm going to get rear-ended. BM> As for the drawbridge, none locally, though two turnstyle bridges. BM> Hasn't occurred to me but the one to Arsenal Island (U.S. Army builds BM> all sorts of stuff there) has had pedestrians and the occasional car BM> stuck on it while rotating open to allow river traffic through. DS> And, like at railroad crossings, where the trains have the DS> right of way... at draw bridges, the mariners (boats) have the DS> right of way. Of course, everyone feels THEY should have the DS> right of way. That's as absurd as having all the traffic lights DS> go green in all directions at the same time. Then, you'd really DS> have demolition derby without going to the speedway. Hmmm: a four-way go! That could be interesting! BM> Right now (early-ish morning of February 27) we're finishing up a rain- BM> storm -- probably the same system that gave the snow to Los Angeles. BM> Had a super-loud thunderclap after 1 (a.m.) and then it poured like a BM> bucket for a short while. ...Hopefully washed the house of the winter BM> grime! DS> We're under an Enhanced Risk of severe weather today DS> (Wednesday, and a Moderate Risk tomorrow (Thursday). So, my BBS DS> will be down more than up until Friday...but that may be longer DS> if power and internet go out. The forecast for tomorrow (Friday March 3) is up in the air (no pun intended): apparently the NWS has issued a winter storm warning from Chicago to about 70 miles west -- they might get up to a foot of snow. I'm about 100 miles further west and the current forecast is for rain or half-inch of snow to 2-3 inches of snow, depending on the track. BM> We were sitting outside yesterday afternoon and it did look like some BM> of the trees were starting to bud. A little early as likely to get BM> another few snows in March; April isn't out of the question either. BM> And yes, we follow the "don't plant until after Mother's Day rule" too. BM> Sometimes very tempting with warm if not hot temperatures but always BM> cools down. DS> They're looking at highs only in the 40s here by late next DS> week...a late season freeze happens every year. Some sort of weather tomorrow (Friday), nice for the weekend, rainy on Monday, decent but cool for the rest of the week.... BM> But the anticipation!! Here have cameras looking out over the BM> front yard and driveway, connected via my WiFi. All internal: not BM> going out into the world and back. My system has to be up (LAN) but I BM> don't use the WAN. DS> As long as I have internet/Wi-Fi, the doorbell camera works. DS> But, I'm not monitoring it, unless I'm expecting a delivery. I DS> get notified if someone is seen, like the mail carrier. There are times it would be handy to have a notification like that here but with what I have isn't going to work. Well, would work but would undo some other monitoring. ...Could do two more cameras (and Raspberry Pi's!) just for 'pinpoint' monitoring -- naaa! BM> Doorbell cameras would be nice but won't fit: framing too narrow after BM> various remodelling. DS> Mine was installed by ADT, and put on a metal clasp holder DS> deal, and I can easily remove the device for charging the DS> internal battery via the USB cable, then re-attach it later. Wonder if they make a right-angle doorbell camera? Here the side door faces 90ø to the driveway and walk. 'Worse' is it's located on the far side: right side of the door and the access is from the left. ...If had a professionally-installed system quite sure they'd have suitable hardware, snake wiring through.... Solar might not work on that side because of the shade. BM> Hope you properly dispose of those sharps! DS> The mosquitoes take care of that. It's the female mosquitoes DS> that come after us, as there's something in our blood that they DS> need for their eggs to mature. The male mosquitoes, on the other DS> hand, suck fruit juices. I guess they need to get stone drunk DS> before they find a woman to make love to. So the mosquito population could be exterminated by keeping the males sober?! BM> A little over ten years away -- they better get moving! DS> I saw another derailment...a propane train in Florida...and a DS> fiery train crash with a freight and passenger train in Greece. DS> You get out of bed, and you take your life in your hands. Stay in bed and debris could fly through your roof! ¯ BarryMartin3@ ® ¯ @MyMetronet.NET ® ....
