Here's a strange question: did you install a new modem?  Back in my 
dial-up dates I replaced a modem to get to (probably) 56K.  Booted up: 
super-slow baud rate (in fact I think it was 2400 but don't recall).  
Checked connections, etc.   

Same brand modem, should be the same AT codes, right?  Wrong!  One of 
the old commands was now used to force modem connections at 2400 (or 
whatever speed I was getting.)  Corrected the command -- wheeeeee!!
