Here's a strange question: did you install a new modem? Back in my dial-up dates I replaced a modem to get to (probably) 56K. Booted up: super-slow baud rate (in fact I think it was 2400 but don't recall). Checked connections, etc. Same brand modem, should be the same AT codes, right? Wrong!
