You haven't watched TV in a while, have you?!  The prize rule was changed
several years back.  The last-placed contestant receives $1,000, the 
second-placed contestant $2,000, while the winner continues to accumulate
all the money earned.  As for Final Jeopardy!. only the contestants with
a positive amount of money can play, and I have seen just the one person
play.  Obviously not playing against anyone, but playing against himself.
