Subj : running linux in vm on li To : Mike Powell From : Barry Martin Date : Sat Dec 08 2018 09:25:00 Subject: running linux in vm on linux box Hi Mike! MP> I have a few questions about running a linux distro in a vm on a MP> linux box. I have read up about how to get Ethernet working over MP> a bridge, but have not yet got to installing the system, etc. As not too many people doing this here I'll attempt some answers. I'm currently running Windows XP on a Virtual Machine; no exerience (yet!) with a virtual Linux on a Linux -- planning on that with the next machine. S.N. - sort of just to further confuse us, there are at least two virtual machine options out there. The one I am using is from Oracle; the one available through the Software Centre isn't as robust. MP> (1) When the qemu session is running, is it smart to use the MP> xserver on the vm instance? If I am not using the xserver and MP> running the vm instance in consolemode, will qemu catch certain MP> keystrokes like ctrl-alt-2 so I can switch totty2 (for example) MP> or will that keystroke combo be interpreted by the hostmachine? Not sure -- different system here but I have not had problems with the keyboard nor mouse switching between multiple OSs/sessions as long as they are set for 'shared' and not 'exclusive' or whatever the terminology is. MP> (2) If I can follow the directions and get the Ethernet bride MP> working correctly, so that the network can see both the host and MP> vm, I assume I can also do things like mount nfs shares in the MP> vm. Is that a correct assumption? Here the one Ethernet cable sees both 192.168.0.21 for the main Linux system and 10.2.0.15 for the virtual Windows XP system concurrently. You can create shared folders which see certain parts of the mounted drives. Possibly the whole drive if configured that way -- I didn't need and didn't want here so didn't do it that way. MP> (3) Will I be able to access other hardware while in the vm, like MP> a usb port and whatever might be connected to it? Yes but you will want to download the optional Guest Additions software else you will only have USB 1.0 with the Oracle VM machine. The USB hardware portion is a little strange. though may be because I screwed up some configuration a while back and never fixed it because I'm goingto move to a New and Improved machine (but first!). Here the scanner is always grabbed by the VM -- just unclick while the VM is loading. A digital camera I play with is never loaded unless I specifically click, nor is a thumbdrive I use as a transfer point. No idea why some USB devices are grabbed by the VM and others are not; just something one needs to look at when plugging in a device and it "doens't work": does the other machine have it? MP> I have run DOS in a vm on a linux box, but I expect this to be MP> different. :) (Oops! I probably should have read all the way through!) I predict you will be giving your scalp a masssge during installation! ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
