Yes, the most active ones are not geographically local.  I visit one based in my own home city but it seems to have few users.  This BBS was one that was active back in the 90s, and I realised after a while I used to dial back into it then!  Although it was running different software, and probably only shares the name and sysop of its current incarnation.

Absinthe is active, and while I do like the aesthetics and the uniqueness of the interface, it unfortunately makes it a bit of an exercise in patience when you have a high ping time.
