RAR handles multi-part volumes quite well and as someone who used to work a
lot with USENET, RAR was the "defacto" standard when it came to working with
archives distributed via USENET, much like how ZIP is a standard in BBSing.

I also registered RAR for its AV stamp ("authenticity verified").  I had
problems in the early 2000s with people screwing up my Cheepware release
archives by inserting BBS ads and the like into them then redistributing
them.

When it comes down to it, it's a personal preference.  These days I tend to
use tar.gz files all the time.  There is a new archiver I found the other
day, though the name escapes me now, that purports to be a hybrid of 7Zip
and RAR.
