**mid-1950s** as part of a major advertising campaign by the  
lingerie brand **Playtex** for its *Cross Your Heart* bra.  
Playtex launched this bra in **1954**, and the slogan "lifts  
and separates" was widely used in its marketing - including in  
TV commercials starting in **1955**, when Playtex became one of  
the first brands to mention underwear on television.
