I think there is some truth to this, but it is not the AC that causes it.  Rather, it is being cooped up in a closed environment for too many hours without any outdoors/fresh air.  I think it shows up more in Winter, when everyone is staying in the heated indoors rather than going out in the cold, as that is when "flu season" usually takes off.
