I like to think that the earth is a kind of galactic wildlife preserve.
Protected from space traffic. The park rangers stop by every 10,000 years or
so to see how things are going. And oooooh man! are they in for a shock when
they come by again.  The human population has turned into an infestation and
they're going to have to decimate it back down to a reasonable level of a
couple million to get the planet back in balance.
