Are you one of the many who wants to learn more about extra-biological
entities (aliens)?  It is commonly reported that aliens and/or their craft
produce a lot of ionizing radiation and radio frequency interference.  If you
are able to make it to a UFO hot-spot before the "guests" leave for some
other place you may find some gems with the use of a Near-Field-Receiver. 
You would wait until the aliens show up and determine what frequency is
spiking, then auto-tune into that frequency and record what you hear.  The
word is that they tend to transmit in the upper short-wave frequency range,
somewhere around 24,000 and 28,000 MHz.  Once you've got a recording you can
analyze the clip for hours after the event.  For a recorder I would recommend
the Sony PCM D-100.  You would hook the recorder via a 3.5mm plug into your
short-wave receiver, aim your mini-Yagi and have some fun.  Okay, so now if
you actually take this knowledge to heart you will be on the alphabet soup
agencies list of frustrating individuals, people who want to learn about the
actually important questions the world has to offer, rather than tuning into
morning talk shows about the latest fashion you would have been up all night
exploring the skies for the cruisers, the V-shaped nice rides that little
brother (the greys) controls.

How can this knowledge be put into more practical use?

You can do direction finding and radio transmission fox hunting in seach for
Sp00ky radio beams.  There are numbers stations (one time pad coded messages
stations) that people all over the world try to hunt down as they are the big
prize in them being super-secret and the owners of the towers wanting to be
absolutely unknown.  The natural reaction for people to take when they learn of
something secret is to learn everything they can about what has been attempted 
to be hidden from them.  You may be one of these... so whether it be aliens or
numbers stations that you're investigating, using the NFR-Yagi-SWR-FieldRec
setup can make for many months of decyphering the mystery.
