Well, hopefully any sort of attack wouldn't be necessary.  When I think about "first contact" or at least "first open contact" from aliens to us here on Earth, I imagine it would be something like the movie "Arrival."  The aliens would have studied us long enough to learn that we are deeply flawed and politically motivated.  They would approach the different major nations of Earth in a similar, simutanious manner.
