"Close" is a large (to us) disatance in space. We call a lot of stars "close" when theyh are thousands and thousands of lightyears away. So even with lightspeed travel, it's not enough. We really would need warp speeds. Assuming we had that, it may be extremly costly. So which planets to check out? If a civilization has all of this now, I imagine they can also observe from a distance planets that have life -- would they stop by here or is that akin to visiting a ant mound?
