 R* = average rate of star formation
 f(p) = fraction of solar systems with planets
 n(e) = average number of planets that could support life
 f(l) = the fraction of planets that could support life that do
 f(i) the fraction of those planets that develop intelligent life
 f(c) the fraction of those planets that develop detectable communication
 L = the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals
 into space.

 If L is low, we're alone. If civilizations learn to live in peace,
 the number could be in the thousands and we're waiting in the lobby
 of a galactic club.
