I dug out some of my classic SF paperbacks to make that list, they all have stamps from used book stores in towns I've left long ago.  But they have that old paperback smell...

I read tons of Niven in High School and College.  Loved it.  The Mote books are good too, I forget what they called the aliens.  Moties?  Enties?  Something like that.  I read 2-3 of the Ringworld books... they were ok but I didn't really like the fixation with Mark Twain and Esperanto.  

I'm not familar with Gateway.  I'll check it out.
