A system of psychologically "cleansing" the mind inÛ
Û Û  order to purge an adversary of "unclean thoughts."  Credited to the

o change enemies of the regime into allies.  The Chinese    Û
 ÛÛ Û  method is less brutal than that of the KGB; howev
er, despite theÛ ÛÛ Û  academic cuteness of t
he name, brainwashing is fraught with terror.   Û ÛÛ 
Û  The goal is to break the subject's spirit by means of physical
Û ÛÛ Û  deprivation, and then to coerce him i
nto adopting a communistÛ ÛÛ Û  viewpoint by 
rewarding his cooperation with such benefits as foodÛ Û
Û Û  and better conditions.  Usually the effects are transitory for
Û ÛÛ Û  those who manage to escape a communist en
