You could, but at that point if suspicions have been raised the investigator may go deeper or put you on a watch list, compromising your ability to complete your mission or anyone you associate with in country.

For example, they think you're shady.  You meet your contact and they start poking around in his life, at which point they find something because of his poor tradecraft.  Boom, now you're both busted, and maybe further down the line, too.
