Subj : Horrible Idea : The Clipper Chip

For many on these message systems this technology was before your time, but
even today, down the road of history many years down the line the Clipper
Chip stands out as the government's greatest FUBAR (fouled up beyond all
recognition).  Imagine a cryptosystem that has a government back door with
poor crypto algorithms alongside the back door and having this mandated on
everything that uses cryptography.  Oh, and did I mention that the US
government would be the sole country able to decrypt the data, even if you
live in Canada, Australia, the UK, Israel, France, Russia, or China.  I mean
really, if you're not American you shouldn't have to use American crapto. 
This was one big TARFUN (Things Are Really Fouled Up Now!)  Anyway so this
disaster was not adopted for obvious reasons.  Its really astonishing just
how bad government can mess up.  This was a class all of its own.
