Instead of trying to preserve the original physical media (and later find that the original film is too delicate or deteriorated for practical re-use) maintain a system that converts or transfers that media to the current technology available as it emerges. eg, 35mm/70mm movie film -> VHS -> DVD -> SD -> whatever. .
