Very interesting guy.

On the radio site, I saw his link to the BaoFeng UV-5RE plus dual band HAM
handheld. I've never had a HAM radio, and at under $40 is in my impulse buying
price range.  :)

Any reviews or suggestions of other cheap radios?

I like his recommendation of the Sony AM/FM pocket radio - I have one
vacuum-sealed with 8 AA batteries, as well as an old Grundig crank AM/FM/SW
unit.

I've been thinking about personal comms, too -- was thinking about getting some
old 4 watt handheld CBs. They should work for short hops from the house, and I
live on a hill overlooking a highway - thought it might be nice to have
something to monitor 9 and 19 with.
