I believe my difficulty was coming at the project with 1980s/1990s partial memories of how it was done there, and initially not finding much to bring myself up to speed.

And I made the mistake of starting my return process with the FidoNet orientated folks.  I've found the fsxNet group to have a better signal to noise ratio and much more helpful on almost every level.  

MicroNet has been helpful as well.
