I gave ESXi a try once, but I am a bit of a ProxMox whore. Your networking 
issue might be solved if you use the virtio network driver, we had a similar 
issue with some containers in an OpenNebula env and changing from the E1000 or 
VMNET driver to the virtio fixed it up, and gave the network performance a 
massive boost to boot.
