I guess including it all in one package is a good way to get things up and running easier than otherwise. It is possible, though, to replace some parts if you wish to -- I chose to use binkd and ifcico as mailers, but Mystic as tosser and BBS, for example. Yes, it does make the product more vulnerable over time. I believe, though, that some earlier version of Mystic actually *was* released as open source, but that it mostly resulted in other people rebranding it, claiming it to be their own work, and probably not contributing much to its development, which surely must have annoyed (and saddened) g00r00 after putting so much effort into it over the years...
