I might be nearly your dad's vintage.  I did use them a bit when I was young in the mid 90s, shortly before the Internet took over.  I didn't message much, but it was the way to be "online" back then.  Though it really wasn't about being online, it was about connecting, seeing what was happening, what messages, new files, etc, a visit then leaving again.

Obviously a lot quieter now, but back then the good boards were hard to get into because the phone lines were tied up!

I particularly liked the customisations that people put into their boards.
