LODE RUNNER (c) SCREEN TRANSFER LODE RUNNER (LR) is one game for 6502 computers that has earned the respect of thousands of users that have never considered themselves to be game players...and, of course, a few thousand that do profess to be game players.. Probably, LR's suc- cess is partially due to the INTER- ACTIVITY allowed through its SCEEEN EDITOR program. Few games enable a user to design his or her own play- fields!!! And, of those few, LR is the best bet. Many users would like to share the end-product of their design efforts but a major problem is encountered: A special format implemented by the screen editor program. This program provides a means to do screen transfers between users. You will have to do a little pencil and paper work, but I think you'll feel it is all worthwhile. (NOTE: As we discuss 'codes', refer to your LR rule book for a list of codes for placing each icon on your screen.) This program implements three tasks required to prepare a screen for transfer: 1. A worksheet -- A grid of 28x16 "squares" representing those of the LR playfield. 2. A screen code entry routine for transferring your paper screen to a disk file. 3. A screen code display routine for copying other users' screens to paper. You can use the paper lists of icon codes with the LR editor to recreate screens on your own disks. While an 80-column printer would be helpful, you could modify this pro- gram to allow for display of codes to your monitor/TV screen. You'll just have to do a bit more writing! To make a worksheet without using a printer, simply draw a grid (28x16) to use in coding your screen for keyboard input. THE WORKSHEET - Use a standard 80- column printer...a worksheet takes a standard 9x11 piece of paper. Use it to hand-code a LR user-designed screen. CODE ENTRY - Simply key in the code for each square on the worksheet. A square will be coded from 0-9 for a representation of the icon placed in each square (or a blank square). When keying a screen a blank RETURN is used to represent ZERO--the key- board will not accept input of the number ZERO. CODE DISPLAY - Use the print-out of any screen you've received to re- create that screen on your own data disk. Simply follow the codes and use the protocols of the LR editor and the instructions in your rules book. That's about all their is to it! If you don't own a printer, you can make modifications--just change the "P:" in any statement opening chan- nel 7 to a "S:". Now, since we means to swap our own screens with others, let's see some screens - YOUR SCREENS - on the SIG so we can all share them! ** PAUL FIELDS * 72465,1260 ** P.S. SCREEN FILES MADE WITH MY PRO- GRAM CAN BE TRANSFERRED VIA CIS.... DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME ASSIGNED TO YOUR SCREEN...IT CONSISTS OF ONLY 6 CHARACTERS (CIS STANDARD FOR A FILE NAME). THE FIRST TWO DIGITS = YOUR INITIALS...THE SECOND TWO = LR (for LODE RUNNER)...THE LAST TWO WILL BE THE SCREEN NUMBER YOU ASSIGN TO THE SCREEN. YOUR ATARI WILL ALWAYS USE THE EXTENDER '.BIN' (PDF) .
