Has anyone ever had a go at making one for a series? was
thinking maybe getting a Laselle one but they are quite pricey
so was wondering if it is possible to make one myself or is it a
case of sticking carpet to the roof instead?

marquee carpet stuck to the roof does the job as it is light and
thin but it does make a mess of the roof if you have to remove
it

That is one thing that puts me off sticking carpet to it, the
mess thats left behine if I ever do have to remove it, or if it
just unsticks on a hot day even

Rather than carpet, i was thinking of using that acoustic
matting the max power boom box boys use to cover their mahoosive
speakers with.

Glued on with;

Then this was used to give the final finish glued onto the
self-adhesive side of the closed cell foam.

Saw somebody who had used stuff off the roll designed for a boat
headlining and side trim, can't remember the name of the stuff
but it looked smart and was designed to do pretty much exactly
the same job, might be worth a search.

Badger Coach Works in the United States makes headliners for all
series vehicles. They also sell all required hardware.
