12v auxilliary socket help

Ay up,
I have wired in a 12v socket, direct from the battery through a
fuse (I think it is 15A).
When I plug my phone in to charge it lights up the phone and
says it is charging, however I can drive for miles and miles
without the battery going up.
Any ideas? Does the size of the fuse matter?
I really can't see a reason for it to not be charging. Battery
is newish and very good, same for alternator. No other
electrical problems.

I have had this in many cars. The umph from the mains supply is
obviously what some phones need. I had it with a PDA, in the
house it would charge, in the car is reduced the battery drain
and the power out could not be replaced by the 12v connection as
I drove along. When it went dead, I got out the map book!

No idea really, it could be something silly. Have you checked
socket output with a meter and revved the engine ?
I wired mine from the original auxilary position and that works,
got an idea sockets are for ten amps max.

Snailer, my phone charges fine from my bubble car so really it
should be ok on 12.
Divie, I have not had a meter on it, I should probably do that
and compare with the run-to-work car.

I suspect it's the charger rather than the phone or the car
wiring or the battery. Was it a cheapo aftermarket 12v charger
that you bought to charge your phone?
The size of the fuse in the circuit will make no difference;
either it's too small and it'll blow, or it's big enough and
it's fine.
Your phone will probably draw about 500mA ( = half an Amp) from
the charger, so it's nowhere near the 10 Amp current limit that
can be drawn from the socket.
You should check that the socket isn't rusty/corroded inside and
that the plug is plugging in snugly. The only other check I can
think of that you could easily do is put a voltmeter across the
terminals in the socket and check that you are getting more than
about 12.5v out at all times.

Thanks James, I am not such a wiz with electrics.
The charger is indeed an ebay job, I will get a better one to
try. I will also check for 12.5v.

Is it only the phone charger that's having issues? Have you
tried something else or another device that would use the same
charger?
I had a similar issue in an old car of mine. It ended up being a
dodgy socket.. I bought a decent one from DMFX (other motor
factors are available maybe not in Darlsberg though) and it
solved it.

It is the only thing I have ever needed to plug in as it doubles
as a sat nav.
The socket is a brand new marine grade one so it should be ok. I
will bear that though. Even supposed quality stuff can have
faults...

Very unlikely to be socket, check how many amps it is putting
out but I'm with the rest of the guys........ebay chargers tend
to be shite or give up after 2 minutes use

What phone is it you are using?
Some phones (iPhones, Samsung to name a few) will only charge
with an approved (manufacturer made) charger, when used with a
cheap charger they will either not charge at all (Apple
Products) or charge very slowly (most others) so that it charges
slower than the rate at which it discharges!
