Replacing a petrol tank

Today I discovered a bit of a leak along the bottom edge of the
petrol tank in my 109. seems that the seam has had it. chewing
gum has stopped the dripping. how straightforward is it to
replace a petrol tank? i'm a novice but keen to have a go if it
basically requires me to drain it, unbolt it, fit some new
sensors into a new one and then bolt it back into place ...
nothing seems to be that straightforward!!
while we're on the topic of straightforward today I experienced
the difficulty of fitting a new chasiss bush for my replacement
springs ...the blood of my knuckles is now seeping into those
new springs

Front or rear tank? The front can be a bit of an arse as one end
should have a rubberised single mounting affair that can be a
total bastard to get undone. Bloody ridiculous concept have the
fixing buried in a folded section of the outrigger. Rear tank
probably easier TBH. The filler hose can stick like shit to a
blanket and new ones can be a bastard to get over the pipe on
the tank but that's about it.

Thanks Noel, it's a rear one. so I might be fortunate. How do I
access all the bits at the top of the tank to connect things up?

In my experience, depending on the age of the vehicle, there'll
either be removable panels in the floor in the rear tub that
allow you to get to the sender and pick-up tube fixings, or
there will be enough slack in the pipes/wires to enable you to
drop the tank down a little bit to get to these fixings.

About fitting a chassis bush: put the bush in the freezer the
night before you fit it. And use lots of copper grease.

I need to drop my tank off very soon and was wondering the same
thing..
Looking forward to working out how to get everything
disconnected, being a fire engine the further into the vehicle
cover is obscured by one of the bulkheads...

Did one on my old 11a 109sw some 20 years ago
There should be 2 plates in the floor. The reason for this is
that the tank is shaped to fit around a chassis crossmember, so
there is a breater between the two "tops" of the tank that will
need removing. along with the wiring for the sender and the fuel
pickup pipe and possibly a return pipe. Then of course there is
the filler pipe and the smaller vent pipe in the o/s wing
I seem to recall that the tank was affixed by a couple of
swinishly located bolts above the axle and 3 or four at the rear
cross member.
It was only when I dislodged the tank and it fell on me I
realised that there was still a considerable amount of diesel
inside as it flooded out !!
Ahh those were the days :-)

Should be.. if you have a full length load space, Mine has a
bulkead, a water tank and pump underlsung, so the load bed isn't
all accessible.

I take it then that it is possibly the tank in th S111 in the
photo ?
Unfortunately as I say it is getting to that cross crossmember
breather that will be the main problem. The cross member it
about 10" in from the rear cross member if I recall correctly.
I took the tank from a friends S111 to fit into mine as one of
the tank breather pipes had fatigued the soldered joint and
leaked, not too worrying with diesel but I was fitting the V8 at
the time so wanted a tight tank for petrol. Plus it had an extra
return inlet, perfect for the return line from the V8 carbs.
