Silent Scope FAQ By: Billy the Kid Date: 7-19-99 Version:.01 Genre: Shooter Arcade *Note: I have just come back from the arcade after playing this game for the first time. I have played through the entire game ONCE. I have not explored all the paths you can take. I have a feeling I took the easy route. Once again, this is a preliminary FAQ. If you have anything to add, please e-mail it to myung2k@mindspring.com Notes/Advisories/General Playing Tips: For anybody who thought Gun Blade New York was fun, but prefers accuracy over blasting away with a machine gun, this is the perfect game. Though far from real, this is hands down the best (if not only) sniper shooter at this moment. I once again stress, ACURACY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HOW MANY BULLETS YOU PUMP OUT. In fact, your score is based heavily on your accuracy. However, there is a time limit and the enemies shoot back. Therefore, your shots must be accurate as well as made in a timely fashion. The firing rate on your rifle is horrible; IT IS NOT A RAPID FIRE WEAPON. Be advised though, your rifle's magazine has about 8 (give or take, I cannot remember) rounds. After these have been expended, there is a rather lengthy reload time. When situations get hairy and there are a whole bunch of enemies on screen, you will have to prioritize. Unlike reality, one hit anywhere on the enemy's body will kill him (this excludes bosses). So if you are in a jam, just hit any part of the enemy that presents itself. A tip is that if there is an enemy ready to open fire at you, fire off a round in their vicinity. If you are lucky, you will hit them. If you do not hit, it will make them dive for cover, so you can concentrate on other things. It will cost you time and accuracy, but if you are low on life, it's worth it. How To Play: You have a turret mounted mock up rifle in front of a large screen. Mounted on that rifle is a scope that gives a magnified view of where the gun is pointed at on the screen. The screen has a red circle on it which traces the movement of your gun. It is essentially a cursor. Targets on screen will have circles around them so you can get an idea of their general location. Many of the targets appear miniscule on screen. Thus, you have your scope. Take aim. That red dot in the middle of the scope's display is exactly where the bullet will hit. Enemies that have a blue circle around them are enemies that have not noticed you yet. On these you can take you can take the time to make an accurate shot. If you miss that shot or if the enemy is in relatively close vicinity to you, the circle will turn yellow. This means they have sighted you and are trying to line up a shot aimed at you. If you don't kill enemies with a yellow circle or if the enemy is in very close vicinity to you, the circle will turn red. This means that the enemy is seconds away from firing at you. Many shots the enemy makes will miss. As the stages progress, however, their accuracy will increase. Bosses will have a health number displayed at the bottom of the screen (i.e. #/#). If you get a head shot on the boss, then the boss's health will instantly reduce to zero. If you make shots to his general body or the vehicle he's in, you will take off a few points each time. When the boss's health is reduced to zero, that incarnation of the boss will die (there are instances of where once you beat a boss in one form, he will get up again and get into a vehicle or something like that). Sometimes, there will be civilians around. DO NOT SHOOT THEM. The civilians are relatively easy to avoid. It is a stupid mistake that even a beginner like me can avoid. And last but not least, you can gain extra health by bringing your cursor over a scantily clad female and getting a nice peak through your scope. These vixens are spread liberally through out the game, normally about two or so each level. If you see what looks to be a human but there is no circle around them, sweep your cursor over them quickly if you have time. No hurt in just seeing :) Semi-Walkthrough: There are multiple modes of play. This will cover the story mode. Level 1- You should have marginal problems here. This is kind of a warm up stage. Just use the first scene or two to get the feeling of the gun. Most enemies will start with blue circles, so just relax and make accurate shots. Do, however, keep an eye on your time. During the course of this level, there will be a pool. While the enemy's circles are still blue, scan the pool's perimeter. You will find a bikini babe and an extra life up. When the time comes to choose between Rooftop, Air, or Stadium, choose Air. I find this the easiest. The boss will start his assault in a fighter jet. His life points are 30/30 to begin with. Take shots at the plane if it is too far for you to get a head shot at the pilot. Once the jet gets close, take aim through your scope and try to get a head shot. If you cannot, quickly peg the body of the plane a few times, this will prevent him from firing. Repeat this procedure until he is dead. Once again, mind the time. Level 2- Once again, you should have marginal problems. The shots are a bit harder, but all the same, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. When the helicopter shows up, do not bother trying to hit the pilot. Just pump 5 rounds into it and take it down. When the boss comes into view, take careful aim at his head and fire. This will kill him unless you missed. He will rise again and hijack a 18 wheeler. He will try and kamikaze you with it. When the cabin of the truck isn't exposed, fire at the truck and knock off some health points. When the cabin does come into view, take careful aim with the scope and try to score a head hit. In my opinion, this is the second most inaccurate places in the game. Even if you do hit him in the head, sometimes he will not die. After you get a successful head shot, you will go onto the next level. Level 3- This is where it gets difficult. It is nighttime and you are equipped with a night vision scope and silencer. You have the choice of going through the woods or parachuting in. I prefer to parachute in. You take more damage, but it's faster. Searchlights will try and spot you in the sky. Try and take out as many as you can, but once you get spotted, just try to keep from getting shot. After you land, there will be a cursor showing where the electrical main is. Shoot it. The lights will go out and you will encounter a whole bunch of enemies. Once again, scan the far perimeter of the pool to find more luscious bikini clad women. As you take out the perimeter guard around the pool, they will launch flares that render your scope useless for a period of time. This is where you learn to aim without your scope. The center of your cursor is where the bullet will land. As you fight these guards, they will have infra red beams that try and find you. The beams will start tilted up and work their way down to you where a hit is almost certain. Kill them before the beam reaches you. After taking out the perimeter, you will go inside. It is completely dark, so even enemies that are close to you will not notice you at first. Use this to your advantage. Work your way through. At one point, you will enter a room with a voluptuous woman in rather exotic, how shall we say, nightwear. She is easily noticeable. Take care of the most pressing enemies in that room and take a good look at her. Once you enter a lit dining hall, you will lose your silencer. This means that any shot you make will be more easily recognized by the enemies and they will locate you more quickly. When you face off against Tom and Jerry, single them out one by one. Don't go for the head shot. When you hit one of them, they will pause. Pin them there and keep firing. 5 shots will take one of them down. When the time comes for you to choose elevators, choose the rightmost one first. This will reveal the aforementioned woman. Take another good look. Next, take the leftmost elevator. Work your way throughout the warehouse and you will come face to face with the boss. She is invulnerable in all places but her chest (imagine that :P) and one half of her face. This is the most inaccurate part of the game. Even if you do get her face, many times it will not register. Her attack is flipping around then jumping at you and slashing you three times. When she lands right in front of you right before she attacks is the best time to try and get a shot in. You WILL die multiple times. After a while, she will jump to where the president is and activate a pair of revolving metal crates. Switch to your scope. Focus on the armored lady. When the crates spin around, there will be a period where she is blocked out and a period where she is open. During these open periods, she will be in one of two places and will alternate every time the crates move out of the way. She will be either behind the president (in which case you can shoot her feet) or she will be to the side of the president and open fire at you. Try to hit her before she hits you. After she dies, a guy in a white suit will taunt you from behind bulletproof glass. Shoot ONE place on the glass repeatedly until it shatters. Now this next bit is IMPORTANT. The guy will be on a yacht. You have one bullet left. No reloading, no continuing if you don't make the shot. You must HIT THE MAN IN THE HEAD WITH ONE SHOT. The easy way to do this is while he's blabbing away, take aim and shut him up (my first try at this, I hit him in the head right as he was telling me to go to hell. He got the he- part out before I capped him). If you want a fair fight, wait for him to stop talking (I have never tried this). If you make the shot, congratulations! You've won! Enjoy the really bad ending :) Physical Tips: Stay relaxed. Take advantage of the breaks in action. Loosen your grip and take a couple deep breaths. This will help you. As with real rifle shooting, try to keep you heart rate low. If your heart rate is up, you are not as rational and you take deeper, more frequent breaths, making the gun move considerably. And, just like real sniping, here is the most valuable tip: DO NOT BECOME SCOPE SIGHTED!! Meaning to say, do not just look through the scope. Keep both eyes open for targets all around the screen. When you choose one, get the red circle (the one that traces your gun movement) in the general vicinity of the target, THEN look through the scope to make the shot. After a good amount of experience, one can hit targets that are relatively close without even using the scope. Whew! That's the end of this FAQ.
