This one covers the GameBoy Color game known as Centipede. Centipede is based off an arcade game made in the 1980s by Atari, which had the same name and quite similar principles. It, alongside other classics such as Pac-Man, Galaga, Missile Command, and Asteriods, became among a set of immensely popular games that has seen reincarnations across the generations - even today, in fact, there is a Centipede game for the Nintendo 3DS! ... That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy. =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Two: Version History **CPEDE_2** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Final - First and likely only version of this FAQ completed. 1:19 AM 12/22/2012 =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Three: Legalities **CPEDE_3** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= This FAQ may not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use. At this menu, you can use Left/Right on the D-Pad to shift through the difficulty levels for the game at the game, Up/Down to cycle through the choices, and the Start Button to confirm your choice. - 1 Player: A single-player arcade-style mode where you try to gain points. - 2 Player Alternate: A mode in which two players will switch turns after each other's death. It is still a point competition. - 2 Player Compete: A mode requiring two GB/GBC consoles and a link cable in which two players will compete simultaneously for the higher level of points. - 2 Player Team: A mode requiring two GB/GBC consoles and a link cable in which two players will play at the same time on the same field to try and help each other progress onward. Playing the Game: ````````````````` (Any references to points are ambiguous due to the slowly-increasing nature of point values throughout the game.) In each of the many levels throughout the game, you will have one way to progress to the next level. You will need to kill every centipede that appears on the screen. At the start of the level, they will appear at the top of the screen. Centipedes will move in one direction until they can no more, regardless of the cause, shift down or up one tile (depends on where they are at the time), then move in the opposite direction. Centipedes can consist of multiple body units, much like the real thing. Unlike the real thing, though, if you shoot a centipede anywhere except the head or tail, it will split into two centipedes. You do get points for such, though. Additionally, if you do end up hitting the head or tail of a centipede, aside from points, the piece will be replaced by a mushroom, which remains stationary. That brings me to my next topic. Mushrooms are spread throughout the field. Many of them are initially present, and more can be brought about by a number of means, including hitting the head/tail of centipedes and random green things that down across the screen. These will serve as obstacles to both you and a centipede, as neither of you are able to proceed into either one. These therefore speed up the progress of the centipede and hinder you. You can get rid of these by shooting them, though it can take several shots. You do get points for doing so, however, and it does remove a hindrance. Note, however, that partially-destroyed mushrooms are repaired upon your death, and the reparations will earn you points. Other obstacles that will impede you, beyond the aforementioned and your own skills (should they be lacking), are the enemies. Primarily, these will include the spiders at the sides of the screen for one thing. They move in a regular pattern - from bottom of screen, straight up, then down and right/left at a 45-degree angle until they reach the bottom again, then a loop. These spiders can also be shot and killed in one hit for some points. There are two other hindrances that I know of. There are red enemies shaped somewhat like triangles that float across the screen at times, but I've yet to see them actually hurt me, so just shoot them for points. There are also random green things that fall from above. They will kill you if you touch them, and they leave mushrooms behind them sometimes. You can shoot them down, and I recommend doing so. That's enough about me; what about you? :P Okay, you can move around with the D-Pad. You can move up, down, left, and right - horizontally as far as the screen permits, and vertically as far as six tiles. You will fire your weaponry with either the A or B Button. You can choose to hold down the button, but the game will force you into only having one visible shot on-screen at one time. You can abuse this, albeit riskily, by getting close to your target and holding the button down for a rapid-fire effect. You start the game with three lives. You will lose one each time you are hit by an enemy or an enemy's attack (should there be any). Lives are relatively rare in this game, coming once every 12,000 points or so. The game will end once you lost all lives and, assuming you broke a high score, you will get to enter your name onto the leaderboard. You will continue progressing through levels by killing all centipedes in a level until you have lost all your lives. Good luck! Tips: ````` ~ If it is possible, try to hit centipedes in their middles. While, yes, this will split them in multiple centipedes, by the time they get to you, they probably will have somehow split up anyways. Not to mention the fact that this makes them somewhat easier to manage and stops many mushrooms from appearing! ~ 'Shrooms are bad for you, unless you're some random Italian plumber from Brooklyn. :P While it is not particularly a smart idea to go out of your way to eliminate the infestation while centipedes are ravaging around, it is a good idea to wait until one centipede unit is left and then slowly go around and eliminate what you can. It's good points, after all! ~ STAY AWAY FROM THE EDGE. The edges of the screen are a horrible place to be for any extended period of time. Those areas are where the spiders come from, and, if you happen to be there as they come out ... boom. ~ Think two-dimensionally! This is not Space Invaders (although it kinda does feel like it) - you are allowed to move up and down! Don't doom yourself by sitting there when a centipede comes to munch on you - go up a few tiles, let it pass, then come back down and blast his eight-bit guts all over the screen!
