INTRODUCTION ===================================================== Hey, what's happening, Cartoon Network video game players? Merit Celaire here to give you all the help you need to master one of the greatest games developed into the Cartoon Network family of videogames... "Dexter's Laboratory: Robot Rampage"! This is my favorite games in my Game Boy Color library, and I cannot wait to share with you strategies to give you an excellent high score, and more importantly, meet the objective of this game. Without further ado, let's move on, starting with the game's story & objective, of course, which follows below. ===================================================== 2. STORY/GAME OBJECTIVE ===================================================== It all begins one day when our boy genius, Dexter gets ready to head into his lab and conjure up more amazing inventions. Little did he know that he was going to encounter some serious trouble once he set foot inside his top secret laboratory that no one knows about (well, except his pesky sister Dee Dee, maybe). Dexter has encountered trouble in his lab before, but not in THIS magnitude... he immediately noticed that his lab robots were going extremely berserk and running all over the place. What's worse is that once the lab robots noticed Dexter himself, they all were throwing the works at him including attempts to zap him, electrocute him... ANYTHING to give Dexter a really bad day... even worse than his feuds with his pesky sister Dee Dee playing around with Dexter's equipment. Dexter had to run for his life to his computer room in the lab, slam the door shut, lock it, and barricade it for fear that the robots will break down the door. Once he turned the computer on, Dexter was frantically trying to find out the source of the problem why the robots were going crazy. To his shock, even the computer was going berserk! "This can't be!" yelled Dexter. "What in the heck is causing my computer to go berserk and my robots to go nuts?!?!" All of a sudden, the image on the monitor slowly turned into the culprit responsible for the mess... Mandark! Dexter and Mandark have had countless fights in terms of who was the better boy genius, but not like this situation that Dexter was in the midst off. "Mandark!!" yelled Dexter. "You've got to be the one that caused this chaos... sneaking into my laboratory and messing with my robots!" "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!! That's right, Dexter!" replied Mandark. "More specifically, I've programmed all your robots to destroy your lab! The only way to stop this chaos of my own doing is to find certain items around the lab, which of course, you'll never find because I've also programmed your robots to destroy YOU TOO!!! Ha, ha, ha! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!" Of course, you all know that when Dexter hears this news, he is now completely enraged at this point. He is not going to sit down and watch the robots destroy his beloved lab bit by bit. He's going to pull out everything he can in his arsenal to fend off the robots, find those crucial items needed to save his lab, and ultimately make Mandark pay for infiltrating it. "You won't get away with this, Mandark!" screams Dexter as he clears the barricades off the door and kicks it open to prepare for the biggest battle he's ever going to face. "You will be sorry that you've ever messed with Dexter, boy genius!" ===================================================== 3. GAMEPLAY BASICS ===================================================== If you've ever played the arcade game "Elevator Action", then you'll get accustomed to this game very quickly. For those who haven't played that game, you'll find that the controls are easy to grasp in this game since the game layout/controls are used from the "Elevator Action" game. This is also the clue to tell you that in order to find those crucial items, you're going to have to use elevators and escalators to arrive at certain floors and find those special rooms which have what you're looking for. In this game, there are two types of doors as listed below: STORAGE CLOSET: These are the doors with a window in front of them. Enter these doors to get a different Power-Up (described later) or a Power Cell (for Dexter's heart meter, also will be described later). LABORATORY CONTROL ROOM: These are the doors with a laboratory flask picture on the front of the door. Enter these doors to find those very important items to advance to new areas. You must find all the Laboratory Control Rooms in the current scene before your able to make your way to the scene's exit. NOTE: To enter these doors, stand on the white stripe and Dexter will automatically enter. Then use the Control Pad Left or Right to exit. Second thing to know about are the types of Power-Ups/Weapons that you're able to get in your fight against the robots. Listed below are these available Power-Ups: LASER GUN: Dexter always starts with this when he begins a new scene. It can fire only one shot at a time. LASER MACHINE GUN: Slightly better than the Laser Gun; fires three shots at a time. PLASMA GUN: The so-called 'silent killer'; once Dexter fires it, all robots in front of Dexter will be killed upon impact... the robots wouldn't know what hit them! Highly recommended for when the going gets tough and you're surrounded by a bunch of angry robots. PLASMA GRENADE: Not as useful compared to the Plasma Gun, but any robot caught in the bomb's radius upon explosion will be knocked out of action. POWER CELL: Refills a heart in Dexter's overall heart meter. (Note that even though you receive a Power Cell upon exiting, you'll still come out with the weapon you had last.) NOTE: Use the B Button to fire, or to throw a grenade (if you have the Plasma Grenade Power Up). Third thing to know about is how to control Dexter himself, including his operation on elevators/escalators. Use this well because your life might depend on it to avoid being in the crossfire. The controls are as follows: CONTROL PAD LEFT/RIGHT: Move Dexter CONTROL PAD UP/DOWN: Move elevator (make sure Dexter is inside the elevator first) Use escalator (make sure Dexter is on the white line before pressing Up or Down) CONTROL PAD DOWN: Duck (when you're NOT on an elevator or taking an escalator) A BUTTON: Jump B BUTTON: Fire gun/Throw grenade NOTE: If you jump toward a robot, you can kill the robot before it fires. Just make sure to avoid the bullets/lasers it shoots. Also, in terms of the elevator shafts, Dexter can also drop down and get on top of the elevators as well (although he can't control them from that position). The only warning is that Dexter cannot drop down more than two floors. If he drops more than two floors, he's finished. Final thing to know about is the Status Area. Always keep your eyes on it, especially in terms of your Heart Meter and the Remaining Vital Items you need to find. The Status Area is located on top of the screen and includes these things: (1) Your Score (2) Remaining Lives (3) Remaining Items to Find (4) Current Power-Up/Weapon (5) Heart Meter SCORE: How many points you have accumulated in the game so far. REMAINING LIVES: You start off with four lives; earn enough overall points to gain more. REMAINING ITEMS TO FIND: The 'items' change as you progress through the game. However, for each 'scene', you have to find a certain number of that said item in order for you to progress. If you have found them all, this part of the status area will change to "OK", which means it's time to proceed to the exit and get out of the area. However, if you reach the exit and still have items left to find, you'll be thrown to the Laboratory Control Room furthest from the exit. Make sure that you get the "OK" on that status area before attempting to exit. CURRENT POWER-UP/WEAPON: Self-explanatory, shows which weapon Dexter is currently using. If Dexter enters a Storage Closet and gets a "Power Cell" for his heart meter, then he'll keep the weapon he had last before entering the door. HEART METER: This is Dexter's health; he has five hearts, but he only starts with four at the start of each new scene or when he loses a life. Each time Dexter gets hit, his Heart Meter decreases by one. If his health is completely depleted, he loses a life and restarts at the same place where he lost his last life. Be forewarned, if Dexter falls down more than two floors or gets squashed by one of the elevators, his entire health will be depleted and automatically loses that life. NOTE: To turn the Status Area off, press SELECT. However, it's highly recommended that you keep the Status Area on ALL the time. It's better that way, and you wouldn't have to wonder how much health Dexter has left before he's fully depleted. ===================================================== 4. GAME LAYOUT ===================================================== Upon starting the game, you'll be asked which Dexter 'character' would you like to be before facing off against the robots. These three characters include: NORMAL DEXTER: Average speed in terms of walking and jumping. ROBOSUIT 1: Slow walking speed, but fast jumping to get across elevator shafts easily and jump over enemy fire. ROBOSUIT 2: Fast walking speed, but slightly slow jumping; still enough to jump across elevator shafts safely. After choosing which Dexter 'character' is right for you, then the battle begins. The game's layout works like this: There are four overall stages to tackle, and each are separated into four "scenes", The first three 'scenes' of the stage are item collecting stages -- collect the specified amount of items to advance to the next scene. The fourth 'scene' involves no items to collect (you'll automatically see "OK" on the Status Area), but requires you to get through to the area's exit and face off a bunch of more robots in the next room to finish the overall stage. NOTE: Should you run out of lives and the game ends, you'll be given a chance to continue the game. If you choose to continue, you'll restart at the beginning of the current 'scene', but your score will be reset to zero. At least you're given unlimited chances if you run into this situation. ===================================================== 5. ROBOTS/SCORE TABLE ===================================================== Here's the complete list of robots you'll be dealing with as you guide Dexter through the lab and the scores you'll get for defeating them: ROBOT SOLDIERS: The 'walker' enemies in this game; they're armed with guns that shoot bullets when Dexter is detected. There are many types of them, but all have the same purpose... find Dexter and destroy him. (100 points) ROBOT DOGS: These robots make an appearance when you start the Stage 2 set. Once they spot Dexter, they try to catch him off guard and run him over. (150 points) LASER STEALTHERS: These robots appear in the Stage 4 set, they fire a laser once Dexter is spotted. Be careful, these lasers they shoot can also go through walls! Four hits should take them down with a Laser Gun or a Laser Machine Gun; they are immediately defeated if a Plasma Grenade is used on them or shot with a Plasma Gun. (200 points) Other scoring methods include: ITEMS: Every time you enter a Laboratory Control Room and collect one of the vital items, you're given 500 points. SAME POWER-UP: If you enter a Storage Closet and come out with the same Power-Up that you had before, you're given 300 points for your trouble. END-OF-SCENE BONUS: Once Dexter reaches the end of the scene, he's awarded a bonus. This bonus starts at 1000 at the start of the game and increases by 1000 as you progress through more scenes. If you "continue" the game, the End-Of-Scene bonus does not reset. LIGHTS OUT: If Dexter accidentally hits a light with his gun and the bulb falls, the lights go out for a few seconds. Rumor has it that extra points are given when you defeat the robots during that time... Hmm... FINAL BATTLE: Yes, there is a final battle here; but I won't spare the details here. Read the walkthrough to see who you're going to have to face to finish the game. What I can say is that if you are victorious in the battle, 20,000 points is added to your overall score. Now with all that said and done, it's time to deal with some serious business and reclaim Dexter's Laboratory from Mandark's evil grip! ===================================================== 6. WALKTHROUGH: STAGE 1 ===================================================== The battle begins at this point as you help guide Dexter through the first set of levels. Here, as Mandark stated in the story, you're going to have to find codes hidden in these scenes to pass this stage. Let's get to work finding them, shall we? ================================================== = Stage 1, Scene 1 = CODES: 4 = FLOORS: 19 = ================================================== CODE 1: (1) Take elevator down to Floor 17. WALKTHROUGH: STAGE 3 ===================================================== Now Mandark's really mad. He now knows that Dexter has found another piece of the code to disable the robots in the lab. However, Dexter still has a long way to go because he still has to find Mandark and bring him to justice once and for all. But first, he's going to have to find some keys that are scattered in this set of scenes for Stage 3. And as if that's not enough; Mandark's even turned up the pressure... now even the ROBOTS are really mad and are determined to annihilate Dexter... even before Dexter attempts to turn around and kill them! Dexter had better turn up the heat himself to get through these set of scenes in one piece. Do it for your precious lab, Dexter! Oh, and that Plasma Gun might come in handy as well. ================================================= = Stage 3, Scene 1 = KEYS: 6 = FLOORS: 26 = ================================================= KEY 1: (1) Take necessary elevators up to Floor 3. And now, Dexter also has to deal with Laser Stealther Robots too.(2) Mandark notifies Dexter saying that he's programmed Dexter's lab to... SELF-DESTRUCT?!?!?!?! (3) Mandark also tells Dexter that in order to stop the lab from self-destructing, Dexter must find the discs in these final set of scenes to disable all of the robots, and go against Mandark's so-called "Super Robot". Of course, as we all know, Dexter's anger has reached the boiling point, literally; no one intimidates Dexter and gets away with it. (2) Take left escalator up to Floor 5. And that where the trouble really starts. As soon as Dexter arrives on this floor, he immediately hears and sees laser gun shots coming from across his direction. This can only mean one thing, as the game lets us know immediately... we've run into MANDARK'S "SUPER ROBOT"!!! But... huh?! This robot is the same size as Dexter, but this maniac will pack a punch if you're not careful. This robot will try to zap you, electrocute you, kick you, stomp you, ram you down, annihilate you... the list goes on. Of course, this even makes Dexter more furious (and now I'm even more furious at this point). That's it. I'm now sick and tired of seeing Dexter having to go through all this chaos just to run into this so-called "Super Robot" that Mandark created to ultimately annihilate Dexter. Enough's enough; it's payback time! And here's the procedure to help Dexter make sure that this maniac goes 'plop!': (1) Immediately after the battle begins, quickly take left escalators up to Floor 9. (2) Take escalators at far right to get down to Floor 7. (3) Get on that elevator and stay there. (4) Then as the 'Super Robot' comes at your direction or attempts to zap you, fire your Laser Gun at it. (5) After the 'Super Robot' takes a hit, press Up or Down on the Control Pad to make the elevator that Dexter is in go up or down, whatever the case may be. This is your 'safety approach' so that you won't get your health meter fully depleted by that maniac. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 as you're battling the 'Super Robot'. Ten hits will make Mandark's own "Super Robot" go crying to him... only to go SLAM!!! on the floor after entering, giving Mandark the clue that this game is over, and it's time for him to give up... as of right now. Dexter's Laboratory has been saved again! And now, Dexter has all the vital items needed to disable the robots and reprogram them to get everything back to normal operation. And Mandark had better learn not to sneak in Dexter's lab and mess with his robots EVER again. ===================================================== 11. SECRETS ===================================================== Upon finishing the game, you'll receive this code. The result is that you're able to play as the "Super Robot" which Dexter defeated in Stage 4, Scene 4. To activate this, press the A Button 10 times, then the B Button 10 times, then the Select Button once. You'll hear a sound confirming successful entry of the code. Then, when you press Start to select your character before beginning the game, go all the way left or all the way right to proceed to the next screen where you'll be able to play as the "Super Robot". The "Super Robot" walks fast, and jumps across elevator shafts fast too. ===================================================== Note that in the walkthrough itself, I have listed the most obvious routes to take to find the vital items to process from scene to scene. If you're not able to find them, they might be located on the opposite side of that said floor. I'll attempt to created an "Alternate Routes" section on this FAQ on the next update. If anyone else is willing to assist me in finding them as well, please don't hesitate to let me know via my contact information at the bottom of this Gameplay FAQ/Walkthrough, and I'll add an acknowledgments section on this FAQ to give you credit for the assistance. Thanks in advance, all! And with that, it's time to put this Dexter's Laboratory: Robot Rampage Gameplay FAQ/Walkthrough to a close. Of course, if there are any corrections that you see that might need to be made, please don't hesitate to let me know about it so that I can make corrections on the next update. Thanks again, all, and until then, Merit Celaire out. ===================================================== 11.
