Pokemon Gold FAQ Version 1.4 By JEdah (TeamRocket@Jedah.force9.net) Date 30/11/99 (British Calendar) It's been a few days and I have done a lot more. Still lacking proper descriptions and all that, plus I totally forgot the Fuschia Gym's Pokemon. I'll do a good update for the weekend. Oh well, enjoy! Section 0: Release History Section 1: Welcome Section 2: Walkthrough Section 3: Pokemon Section 4: New Attacks/Skills Section 5: New Pokemon Types Section 6: New Pokemon Trainers Section 7: Breeding. Sectiob 8: The rest. 0. Release notes: 1.4 - Defeated all 8 original Gym Leaders and Ash Ketchum. Added town names. Added nex "Pokedex" (list of Pokemon 152 to 251) 1.3 - Beat the Elite Four, made it to the original map, defeated three of the old Gym Leaders. Added many more names. Added how to get past the first Gym (where the Togepi Egg is). Rewrote the section on new attack notes, and mentioned the three new types. 1.2 - Added information about the flute required to get past Usocky (the tree). More Pokemon, started naming them. 1.1 - Added to guide how to get up to 8th gym. Togepi evolved! New trainers, new Rockets! Remembered where Strength came from. 1.0 - First release! Info up to fourth gym. 1. Welcome! Hi, welcome to my latest effort, the Pokemon Gold FAQ. Before emailing me please read the disclaimer. Well, I think I have done pretty well considering I can't read a word of the game.I've had a lot of help and wish to thank everyone who has emailed me, even if I couldn't get back to them. Now on with the show! Thanks to everyone who has written in so far (provided they weren't asking about the ROM). I'm sorry I can't email people to let them know when a new release is out. Best bet it to always check GAMEFAQs.com. It is always up there first, as soon as I write it (earlier than even my own site). I get a LOT of email on this and my Yellow FAQ, plus all the regular porn ads and special deals you expect from the "net." Sigh. Quick disclaimer: - I can't read a word of the game, so I'm improvising through it. - All begging for a ROM is deleted. - I welcome any help (especially since I'm stuck) - Correspondence will only occur if you cite where you downloaded this from. And now, a walkthrough. 2. WALKTHROUGH Beginning. You start by setting the clock (this game uses an internal clock!). After this, a similar introduction to the old game occurs, where Oak talks to you and you name yourself. No rival though... WAKABA TOWN Then, you appear in your house. Go into the big building where you get to choose a starter Pokemon from the table (and the professor is NOT Oak!). The three available are: - Hinoarashi; Hedgehog thingy (Fire) - Waninoko; Crocodile thingy (Water, I chose this) - Chicolita; Leaf-headed thingy (Grass) Then, head left, towards the next town. You don't have Pokeballs yet so you can only fight wild ones, not capture. YOSHINO CITY When you reach the first town, use the Pokemon Center if you must, then go north. One route is blocked by two kids having a Pokemon battle, so go the other way, to a hut. In there you find - OAK! He gives you a Pokedex, then leaves. When you go outside, your phone (??) rings. Listen to the conversation, then head back home. On the way, your "rival" appears, and will challenge you, with the Pokemon from the start that is strong against yours (I chose Croc, he chose the Leaf-Head thing). After you beat him, head home, talk to the professor, and then go back to the next town. A guy there shows you how to catch Pokemon. You can now buy Pokeballs from the store. Head north, past where the two kids were battling (they are gone), and enter the next city (go up, then left, the cave is dark). KIKYOU CITY In this city you find - A GYM! Go ahead and fight the gym trainers and Leader. They all use flying types. GYM LEADER - Hayato Pidgey Pidgeotto What a weak Gym! Win the badge, and then enter the tower slightly north. Make your way to the top, fighting the monks and their Bellsprouts. At the top, the Rival beats up a monk and leaves. You then fight this monk, and if you win, you get HM Flash. In the Pokemon Center you will see an "Aide." Make sure you have an open slot on your belt (5 or less Pokemon) and he'll give you the Togepi Egg. From here, go South, as going West is blocked by a "tree" (more on this later). South there are caves, in one you must make up a puzzle-shape (a Kabuto!) and if you do, you fall through a trapdoor into the other cave. In there you fight these strange "stick-like" Pokemon who all look different but have the same Dex- entry. Further South, past a man who blocked you before (if you tried), you enter a cave similar to the old "Rock Tunnel." Getting through is fairly straightforward. You'll reach the next city, which is being held captive?? Maybe. It's Team Rocket! HIWADA TOWN You can't enter the gym yet. Go to the north-most house, and talk to the man. He rushes out. Return to the well you saw upon entry. The Team Rocket man has gone. Fight the Rockets in the well, and once beaten they all leave. (Apparently they kidnapped some Slowpokes!) You can now enter the Gym - The Bug Gym! GYM LEADER - Tsukushi Kakuna Metapod Scyther Another lame gym! After this, Rival will attack again. This time s/he has three Pokemon - Zubat and Gatly in addition to the starter. Next, head west, into the forest. You'll meet a Farfetch'd, that keeps running away from you. Chase it until it runs into someone else and has nowhere to go. The police officer gives you HM Cut. Use this to cut your way out of the forest. Next, go north, until you reach a big City. KOGANE CITY Around this time, I only just noticed I had an egg, I do not know from where, and - IT HATCHED! TOGEPI! More on him later. Enter the gym - the NORMAL GYM? Here you fight all normal types. GYM LEADER - Akane Clefairy Clefairy Milktank! Some people have said Milktank is super tough. WTF? I wasted it easily! Win this one, then go into all the houses and talk to everyone. Somebody gives you a Pokeflute type item (apparently a Sqirtle shell thingy) which you'll need soon. Then you can go north to come kind of park, with grass cut in the shape of a Pokeball. You can enter some contest here, dunno what it does. I caught a Caterpie. (!!) If you leave and go East, you'll encounter that tree thing again that blocked your path. In order to get it to wake up, you'll need the "Poke flute" from the city you just visited (apparently it's a Squirtle shell instrument or something). Head back to the tree and press A. It's a Pokemon! Usocky! Must be the new Snorlax. Be sure to catch it, there's only one (so far)! ENUJ CITY Go north to the next city and the next gym. The GHOST GYM! All the trainers have ghosts. GYM LEADER - Matsuba Gastly Haunter Gengar (yay!) Haunter There is a house in this city with Japanese singing girls. Each one challenges you to a match with an evolved Eevee (including two new types!). Defeat them all and the business man will give you HM Surf. ASAGI CITY >From there go West, to the seaside town. There is nobody in the gym, but Rival comes out and talks to you, then leaves. A man in a hut somewhere in this town gives you HM Strength. Surf south and then West to reach an island town. TABAN CITY Enter the gym. These guys use fighting types. GYM LEADER - Shijima Primeape Poliwrath Outside the Gym, a lady gives you HM Fly. Leave this place and back to the town with the empty gym. Make your way up the lighthouse tower. No, you won't find Bill in there, but there are a lot of trainers. At the top you'll meet the Gym Leader and her Pokemon (the steel Onix, I think). She'll leave after a chat. (NOTE: Many people say she will not leave. Anybody know why?) Head to the gym and fight her. Steel Gym? GYM LEADER - Mikan Magnemite Magnemite Haganail (Steel Onix) Next, head East, past the town with the Ghost gym, and enter the cave to the west, exit the other side. CHOJU TOWN You'll reach a little town with a gym and a fat man in the way. Head north, not east, as a man blocks the path east, and takes money off you for nothing! North then (Important: There is a toll booth belonging to Team Rocket who charge $1000 per passage! Better to take the grassy route.). In the lake is a Red Gyrados. Surf in and fight it (capture it, it's good!). After this, return to dry land and next to a signpost you'll see.... Lance? Lance the Dragon Trainer! Talk to him and he flies away. Go back to the little town, and then enter the "store." Lance will rough up some guys then uncover a secret staircase. Go down. It's a Team Rocket base! Make your way through, trashing the Rockets. Defeat everyone and pick up the items (two of them are keys, I think). Note - there is an item hidden in one of the bookshelves, this may be a key. Rival shows up but does not fight. Eventually you'll fight the apparent bosses of Team Rocket. The first is a man (looks a bit like Butch!) and when beaten he runs. Make you way towards the entrance again and open the door to the "reactor." The boss guy shows up with a woman too, but Lance shows up. Tag team! You fight the woman, she's not very hard (don't know who she is, it isn't Jessie). Win, then deactivate the reactor, to do so, defeat the three Electrodes. Lance will give you HM 06 and then leave. You can now enter gym 7 - Ice Gym! GYM LEADER - Yanagi Seel Dewgong Inomu (Mammoth) Back to KOGANE CITY (The Third one) From here you could go East, however the gym in the last city is barred. Return to the City with the third gym (the cow). Go to that building shaped like a gothic tower. Team Rocket have taken over! Make your way through and kick their butt. There is a huge locked door, but you'll come back. At the top you meet the male boss guy. Waste him. From here, go downstairs, into the tunnel that exists in this town. A previously locked door in this tunnel can now be opened. When you go in, it's some kind of prison, but before you do anything, Rival attacks! Rival now had the third stage evolution of Leaf-Head. Destroy him/her. Then go through the Team Rocket prison, opening the doors (controls on the wall) and picking up stuff. Take the lift up and out (you end up in the department store). Then head into the gothic building again. Go up to that big door, and open it now. Fight the Rockets up to the top floor, where you will face both the he and the she Rocket bosses. After this, you can NOW go to the eighth gym. CHOJU TOWN (7th Gym) and then FUSUBE CITY Sigh.... go back to gym 7. Now, go east, and through the arctic cave. Some tricky ice slide things in here. Work them out for yourself, they're fun! Be sure to get HM 07 in here, you'll need it. When you leave, you'll be in a City. Go to the gym - dragon gym! You'll need someone with Strength to push boulders and stuff round. GYM LEADER - Ibuki Dragonair Dragonair Dragonair "Kingdra"! (Kingudora) Ibuki does not give you the badge. Leave and Surf upwards to a cave behid the GYM. You'll enter a cavern with whirlpools. Use HM 06 to eliminate the whirlpool and then search around for a Pokeball. When you get it, Ibuki will walk in and give you the 8th badge. From here you have 2 choices - onto the elite, or go capture Houou first. HOUOU Go to the city with the Ghost Gym. Head to the north-most house. A series of tunnels leads to a tower. Climb this tower (which was previously blocked by a monk) and at the top you will find Pokemon number 250, Houou. You only get one chance to capture it, so be careful. If you wondered, Houou was the bird Ash saw flying past in the first ever episode of the cartoon. Lugia, the other rare, only exists in Silver. I do not know if Houou is in Silver or not. THE ELITE FOUR Ok. To get to the Elite Four, you must return to WAKABA TOWN. You see the water to the right? Surf across it. You'll reach a cavern which you can only get through if you have HM 07, the waterfall climbing HM. From there, surf and walk along the appropriate path, fighting the trainers along the way. Check the map. Look familiar? Sure does to me... VICTORY ROAD The man at the door will let you in. Make your way through Victory Road. Just as you reach the end, you face Rival for the final time. S/he has 6 Pokemon now. Defeat him/her and s/he leaves. You can then head into the Indigo Plateau ELITE FOUR As before, you must defeat all 4 without and visit to a Pokemon Center. Are you ready? Yup. Let's go! (Sorry, I forgot some of the Pokemon, so I listed them as ????. I haven't had time to go back and check them.) ELITE FOUR MEMBER ONE - ITSU (looks like Ricochet from Slingers) Neito Exeggutor Jynx Slowbro Neito As you can see he uses all psychic types. ELITE FOUR MEMBER TWO - KOGA (!!!) Ariadosu Venomoth Foretosu Muk Kurobat (Evolved Golbat) Koga has been promoted! He uses poison types as usual. ELITE FOUR MEMBER THREE - BRUNO "Capoera" (looks like a new Hitmon, a cross between them both) Hitmonchan Hitmonlee Machamp Onix Bruno is still amongst the Elite. He uses Fighting and Rock types. ELITE FOUR MEMBER FOUR - KARIN Blacky Vileplume Gengar Yamikarasu Belugar She uses Ghost and Evil types (perhaps just Evil types if Gengar is now Evil - don't know) Now onto the league champion - no, it isn't Rival, Gary or Ash, its: POKEMON LEAGUE CHAMPION - LANCE Gyrados Dragonite Dragonite Dragonite Aerodactyl Charizard The ONLY battle I was defeated at in the entire game! THREE Dragonites?? After you win, Oak and your mom show up - you've completed Pokemon Gold! But is there more? Oh yeah.... THE OLD WORLD - ASAGI CITY That's right! If you go to the town with Gym 6, you can catch a boat. On board you have to beat several trainers and reach the captain. Talk to the little girl, and then the ship docks in.... VERMILLION CITY Vermillion City! Get off and look around - it's pretty much the same! Enter the Gym there to face.. GYM LEADER - Lt. Surge Raichu Magneton Electabuzz Electrode Electrode Looks like Surge has been collecting! Win and you apparently get a Thunder Badge! From here you can go north to... SAFFRON CITY The Fighting Spirits Gym exists still, but nobody in there will fight. But the main gym is still there... GYM LEADER - Sabrina Eifi Mr. Mime Alakazam Defeat her for a Marsh Badge. Next up, go East to.... CELADON CITY If you go up the back door of the programming tower, you will NOT get Eevee! Damnit. Head into the Celadon Gym .. GYM LEADER - Erika Tangela Turnip thingy Victreebell ??? FUSCHIA CITY In the Fuschis Gym, there are many ninjas. Fight them all. One of them (bottom left) is the new Gym Leader, a woman. Is this supposed to be Aya? Doesn't she wear electric pink? GYM LEADER - ?? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? POWER PLANT Next, head to the power plant and talk to everyone there. Then go to Cerulean City. CERULEAN CITY When you enter the gym, you'll meet a member of Team Rocket! He runs away. Head up Nugget Bridge and you'll meet him there. Defeat him. Head for Bills and there you will meet Misty (note - could actually be Daisy). She'll return to the gym and you can go beat her for a Cascade Badge. GYM LEADER - Misty Golduck (Psyduck evolved? Nooooo!) ??? Lapras Starmie Now, searach around the square pond area in the gym for a very important item. POWER PLANT AND LAVENDER TOWN Take this to the Power Plant and give it to the man working on the generator. He'll give you a TM and stuff. Now go to Lavender Tower and talk to the business man. He'll improve your radio. VERMILLION CITY FINALLY, head back to Vermillion City, and to the HUGE Snorlax blocking the path. On the radio, select the highest frequency - the Pokeflute. Then press a next to Snorlax and it'll wake up. You only have one chance to capture one, do it! (Did it take like forever for us to work out how to get past Snorlax or WHAT?) VIRIDIAN AND PEWTER CITY Go through the Rock Tunnel to Viridian City. There's nobody in the gym, so head to Pewter City. The Viridian Forest is just a bit of the world map now, not a seperate dungeon. Enter Pewter City Gym and you'll face Brock. GYM LEADER - Brock Graveler Kabutops Omastar Rhyhorn Onix PALLET TOWN AND CINNABAR ISLAND After this, head to Pallet Town and Surf down to Cinnabar Islands. Hey, whos that stood there? It's Gary! Talk to him and he flies away. Surf to the left towards the old Seafoam Islands. Enter, and you'll find Gym Leader Blaine (alas, with no wig). GYM LEADER - Blaine ???? Magmar Rapidash VIRIDIAN CITY Now go to Viridian City, and face the Gym Leader - GARY IAK! GYM LEADER -Gary Pidgeot Exeggutor Alakazam ??? ??? Arcanine Now you have all 8 of the original badges. Only one true battle remains - ASH KETCHUM! Talk to Oak in Pallet town, then head to Victory Road (East of Viridian). Then go left, you'll notice the two men who once blocked your path are gone. Head east and then north, into a cave. Make your way gradually north through the cave, and eventually you'll come face to face with Ash! He doesn't speak, he merely battles! ??? - ASH KETCHUM Pikachu Venusaur Eifi Snorlax - THIS REMINDS ME WHY I HATE ASH KETCHUM SO MUCH! I HATE THIS STUPID POKEMON! Blastoise Charizard After you defeat him, he teleports away a la Team Rocket, and you get ending credits! Congratulations - you uber-finished Pokemon Gold! 3. POKEMON! Pokedex entreies 152 to 251. Various people have sent this list in; it is likely from Meowth 346's site, but ehh. 152 CHIKORITA - Starting Grass Type and evolved forms. 153 BEIRIFU 154 MEGANIUMU 155 HINOARASHI - Starting Fire Type and evolved forms 156 MAGUMARASHI 157 BAKUFUN 158 WANINOKO - Starting Water Type and evolved forms. 159 ARIGEITSU 160 ODAIRU 161 OTACHI 162 OOTACHI 163 HOHO - Owl and evolved 164 YORUNOZUKU 165 REDEIBA - Ladybug and evolved form 166 REDEIAN 167 ITOMARU - Spider and evolved form. 168 ARAIDOSU 169 KUROBA 170 CHONCHI 171 RANTAN 172 PICHU - Result of mating two Pikachu 173 PII - Result of mating two Clefairy 174 PUPURIN - Result of mating two Jigglypuff 175 TOGEPI 176 TOGECHIKKU - Evolved Togepi 177 NEITEI - Pea-shaped bird 178 NEITEIO - Green Penguin (evolved) 179 MERIPU 180 MOKOKO 181 DENRYUU 182 KIREIHANA 183 MARIRU - "Pikablu" the blue mouse ball shaped thing. 184 MARIRURI 185 USOKKI - Tree that blocks road. 186 NYOROTONO 187 HANE 188 POPO 189 WATAKKO 190 EIPAMU 191 HIMANATTSU 192 KIMAWARI 193 YANYANMA 194 UPA 195 NUO 196 EFUI 197 BURAKKI 198 YAMIKARASU - Dodo/crow thing. 199 YADOKINGU 200 MUUMA 201 ANNON - The Unknown one with many shapes. 202 SONANSU 203 KIRINRIKI 204 KUNUGIDAMA 205 FUORETOSU 206 NOKOCCHI 207 GURAIGA 208 HAGANERU 209 BURU - Snubble/Bruno 210 GURANBURU 211 HARISEN 212 HASSAMU 213 TSUBOTSUBO 214 HERAKUROSU 215 NYURA 216 HIMEGUMA 217 RINGUMA 218 MAGUMAGGU 219 MAGUKARUGO 220 URIMU 221 INOMU 222 SANIGO 223 TEPPOUO 224 OKUTAN 225 DERIBADO 226 MAINTAIN - Manta Ray 227 EAMUDO 228 DERUBIRU 229 HERUGA 230 KINGUDORA - Evolved Seadra 231 GOMAZOU 232 DONFUAN 233 PORIGON2 - Evolved form of Porygon. 234 ODOSHISHI 235 DOBURU 236 BARUKI 237 KAPOERA 238 MUCHURU 239 EREKIDDO 240 BUBII 241 MIRUTANKU 242 HAPINASU 243 RAIKOU 244 ENTEI 245 SUIKUN 246 YOGIRASU 247 SANAGIRASU 248 BANGIRASU 249 LUGIA - Rare Dragon 250 HOUOU - Rare bird 251 SEREBII - New "Mew" equivalent. And probably more! They've mostly all been redrawn (again), and some of them look excellent. Magikarp is back to it's old look, only better, some like Kadabra and Raichu look totally sweet. In contrast, some like Hitmonchan look totally lame. Caterpie, to my recollection, has not been redrawn. Dammit! Why not? It's mortal enemy, Weedle, has! Even if Weedle does have a big fat head. And, AND, in Silver, they're all redrawn AGAIN! Togepi: It hatches at level 5, and has something like growl, and something where a heart pops up! WTF? At level 7 it learns Metronome! Some....weird attack at level 17 that causes confusion! And IT EVOLVES AT LEVEL 25! Into.... some kind of ostrich with wings? Far out! Croc-thingy!: My starting Pokemon, had scratch and leer. Learned Water Gun, Bite. Evolved at level 18. Learned A better Leer, and Slash. Evolved again at level 30! I'll add evolution levels/stones/trades and all that as soon as I a) find them out, and b) have the time. 4. New attacks/Skills The Ghosts have a new voodoo type move. MAN does this hurt!! It will stab itself and do big damage to itself, but then YOU will take that damage each phase until you faint! It's EEEEVIL! Wrap and similar attacks no longer prevent you attacking, but they continue to hit and hit and hit. PLus, most important, you cannot swap Pokemon whilst caught by such an attack!! Evil! The only other attack I can recall is the one that Dodo uses where it fades out and does damage to you, some kind of evil attack probably. More info to follow. 5. New Pokemon types Three new types have been added. Steel Devil Evil In my opinion I think the Ghosts are now Ghost and Evil type, instead of poison, which makes sense; they don't poison. Magnemite and Magneton appear to be Electric and Steel. More info to follow. 6. NEW TRAINERS! Fire-Breathing Clown!: Uses poison and fire types Pikachu fanatic!: This guy is great. He wears a black T-shirt with Pikachu on it, and has a little boy with him dressed up as Pikachu! Uses..... PIKACHU! (Also Raichu) Cop: for some reason, cops attack you! They use Growlithes. Twins: Two girls together on the map (harder to dodge!). Use bug types. Rocket boss, male: Looks like Butch! Rocket boss, female: Doesn't look like Cassidy or Jessie! Rock Star! Only saw him in Surge's Gym - using electric types. Of course everyone looks new but has been redrawn. One of the old girls looks like my good (maybe someday better, fingers crossed, ha ha) friend Rebecca, to her detriment. 7. Breeding. Expect this section soon. For now, as I guessed, breeding is the only way to get the devolved Piakchu, Jigglypuff and Clefairy. I believe this is also the way to make the new Hitmon, that looks like a combination of Chan and Lee. Also the new Magmar, who looks like Muk and Magmar? And the devolved Jynx? Who ever heard of a male Jynx? Section 8: Stuff. Where to get this guide. Team Rocket UK: http://www.jedah.force9.co.uk/TeamRocket.html GameFAQs: http://www.gamefaqs.com The Cerulean Gym: http://www.ceruleangym.com You get it from ANYWHERE else, it's stolen.
