Introduction Welcome to the world of Columns 3. If any of you have ever played the original Columns (the first, i.e. Columns) you will already know that Columns is a Tetris clone puzzle game, but a very good one at that. The simple object was to rank up the highest score by staying in the game as long as possible. This time Columns is back, but with a little bit of a twist. This time in Columns, you are truly against an opponent; it's not about ranking up the score, but defeating your opponent. More about this is explained in the next section. Columns 3 is a super addictive game, and a fantastic multiplayer game. c.) How to play When you begin a game in columns 3, you will have a rectangular black box. This is the playing area, you will have a few windows to your left / right too. These windows are the "Next Jewel" and the scoring windows. When the game starts, a vertical set of jewels will appear, you can move these with the D-Pad, left, right and quickly downward. Once the jewel touches solid ground and the white border around the jewels disappears, the jewels can no longer be manually moved. Once this happens, another set of jewels drops down. To get rid of jewels and accumulate a score, jewels of the SAME COLOUR must meet VERTICALLY, HORIZONTALLY or DIAGONALLY. Once three or more jewels of the same colour meet in the ways described above, they will disappear, and any other jewels lying above the disappeared jewels, will drop down into the space, which has just been made available. To make the game much easier, pressing button B can alter the order in which the jewels appear. Each jewel in the set that is currently in action will shift toward the bottom, while the one at the bottom, moves to the top. As you eliminate enough sets of jewels, your score will increase. When you have 10 points, 20 points, or even 30 points (30 is max), you can perform an action named the "crush bar". This moves up the base of the playing area on your opponent's side and shatters any jewels that are currently in play. Other things you can do are: The Magic Jewel: This jewel has 3 different uses. Use 1, this pushes down your crush bar. Use 2: This eliminates the all of the same coloured jewels you can see in the playing area that it lands on Use 3: this one pushes up your opponent's crush bar. You can get the different uses by shuffling (button B) the Magic Jewel. DON'T LET THE MAGIC JEWEL GET SHATTERED! THEY ARE RARE! The Flash Jewel: This is a special jewel that flashes. They appear in two ways, 1: If you're lucky, a jewel in the playing area will start to flash, this never stops flashing. 2: If you manage to eliminate 3 sets of jewels simultaneously or consecutively, your next set of jewels will have on in, DON'T LET IT GET SHATTERED! THESE ARE ALSO RARE! The flash jewels do a number of desired effects, the effects that I have seen, may be viewed in the tactics section. d.) The aim of the game The aim of Columns 3 as mentioned above, is not to rank up a high score, but this time, to wipe out your adversary. This can be done in many ways, you could play until they get "piled out", or you could use some devious tactics, such as the "Crush Bar" and the "Flash Jewel", more about these is explained in later sections. Once your opponent is beaten, in one player mode, you get various items that have effects on the jewels you have already accumulated. e.) The controls The Directional Pad (D-Pad): Left - This moves the current set of jewels to the left. Right - This moves the current set of jewels to the right. Down - This quickly sends jewels downward. Up - No function Buttons A, B, and C Button A 1+2 player - Uses the crush bar attack on your opponent. 3+ players - Uses the crush bar attack on the opponent to your left. Button B - Shuffles the current set of jewels (Jewels CANNOT be rotated on their sides, it wouldn't be COLUMNS then would it?) Button C 1+2 player - Uses the crush bar attack on your opponent. 3+ players - Uses the crush bar attack on the opponent to your right. Buttons X, Y and Z: No function for any. Ok, now that that's out of the way, I think we may begin the game for real now! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 2 - Beginning the game ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- a.) A few things to note Items can be used here, they have effects on the jewels that you have already accumulated. You can use the items by pressing start to pause, and then selecting an item with A, B or C. b.) The Items Here is a list of the items that I know about: Hourglass - This, basically is a continue, if you lose both computer matches (they challenge you to best out of three), then you can try again with one of these. Magic Gem - Surprisingly enough, this calls upon the Magic Jewel. On your next turn, you'll get one. Magic Bell - Eliminates all accumulated jewels (great for tight situations and for the treasure chest, you'll see what I mean!) Heavy Weight - This gets rid of your crush bar. It's a lifesaver sometimes. Barrier - Prevents your crush bar being moved up for about a minute. Antidote - When you are suffering from a flash jewel effect, use an antidote and the effect will go away. Handy for not being allowed to shuffle. c.) The Walkthrough I recommend that you try practice level first, this takes you up to the Skeleton enemy. Then may you proceed to normal level. Every enemy will have information displayed like this SLAM?: This will show whether the enemy can slam the jewels (press and hold down on D-PAD) quickly or not. SHUFFLE?: Shows whether enemy can shuffle (no point really as they can all shuffle) CHAIN COMBOS?: How well they can do these. MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: How they will use their Magic Jewel CHALLENGE NUMBER 1 - The Spider SLAM?: No Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: None above 3 MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down This guy is relatively easy, he can shuffle, but he cannot move jewels downward quickly. So, that means that he gets points very slow, but will use the crush bar. Quickly gather ten or twenty points (preferably twenty), and then use the crush bar. Following this, gain thirty points and use it again. Then go back to the tens and twenties. If a magic jewel appears, use it to push up his crush bar, unless you are in trouble. ITEM REWARD: AN HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 2 - The Bat SLAM?: No Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: None above 3 MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down The bat likes to show off how he can move the jewels side to side so quickly, but once again he cannot slam down. He can only shuffle. He's just a tad harder than the spider, use the same tactic as you did for the spider. ITEM REWARD: AN HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 3 - The Skeleton SLAM?: No Slam, but can move faster with constant shuffling SHUFFLE?: Constantly CHAIN COMBOS?: Very Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down After this battle (practice mode only), the game ends. However, if you are in normal, this is about a quarter way through. The Skeleton, is a mega shuffler, and shuffles to satisfaction. He knows how to place his jewels, but once again, no slam. BUT, he can move the gems faster with his constant shuffling. He tries to gain 20 or 30 points and he occasionally gets chain combos, so expect some flash jewel effects here. Constantly get 20 or thirty points yourself, preferably thirty, as you are faster than he is, you can beat his speed, and win. ITEM REWARD: A HEAVY WEIGHT / BARRIER / ANTIDOTE / NOTHING! CHALLENGE NUMBER 4 - The Treasure Chest SLAM?: Yes at start for about 5-6 moves, after then, No. SHUFFLE?: Yes, but not while slamming CHAIN COMBOS?: Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down Be afraid be very afraid, it's a talking treasure chest. And you should be afraid too, he's really tough! This chest at the start has a super speed boost that lasts him about 5 to 6 moves, he will slam during this time. He is a real experienced player, he knows how to set up chain combos, so expect some flash jewel effects again. Beating him, isn't easy, but accumulate lost of points quick, use your magic jewel to push down your crush bar, or push up his, use any items here if you need them. He is very hard. ITEM REWARD: A HEAVY WEIGHT / MAGIC GEM CHALLENGE NUMBER 5 - The Ghost SLAM?: Yes, can Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Occasional MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down A polite enemy? Anyhow, this ghost thing is a true Columns Player. He plays fairly, uses crush bars a lot. He doesn't have the annoying speed boost that the Treasure Chest had, but he plays the game properly, he can also slam anytime he wants. Though his slam is slower than yours. Use as many crush bars as you can. You should have a few heavy weights as well. They will come in handy. So, now then, what else is he good for. He can also do chain combos, though I haven't received a flash jewel effect from him though. This may be a good thing. Either way, I'm not sure which is harder, the chest or the ghost. ITEM REWARD: A HEAVY WEIGHT / ANTIDOTE / MAGIC GEM CHALLENGE 6 - The Snake This is about midway. SLAM?: Yes, can Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down or to eliminate one colour if not too high. Okay, I have had to update this strategy here. I have a new one. This snake will only use his crush bar when you push his up, this includes using the Magic Jewel to push his up. So the best strategy I can think of here is to gain 30 points before the Magic Jewel, or as many as you can. The snake will most likely have 30 at this time. Use your Magic Jewel to push his bar up. He will then use his thirty points to use a crush bar against you. This pushes his down to the base and moves yours up three. Now use your crush bar and your will move down to the base and leave his up at 3 bars! Repeat strategy until the next magic jewel, or you could use the Magic Jewel item. Beware, he will use his Magic Jewel to push his crush bar down, messing up the strategy, so try to beat him before he gets his or uses it. ITEM REWARD: A MAGIC GEM / A MAGIC BELL (!!!!!!) / A HEAVY WEIGHT / NOTHING! CHALLENGE 7 - The Zombie (I think it's a zombie anyway... It kinda looks like a frog zombie!) SLAM?: Yes, can Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Occasional MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down For an enemy that's past midway this isn't too hard. He will ONLY use his crush bar when he has accumulated 20 points or more. As soon as his score rises above 20, he'll use it. This is good as he is fairly slow at gathering points, meaning that you can gather at least 20 before him. Preferably 30 though. When he uses his crush bar, use yours and he will have the bars to deal with, while your crush bar is still on the ground. When you get a magic jewel, use it to push his crush bar up, if his bar is fairly high before you use the magic jewel, you could chance "Magic Crush" (magic jewel to push enemy's crush bar up followed by crush bar attack) to work, but it may not and he may use his crush bar back at you. I wouldn't chance it. He uses his magic jewel to push his crush bar down, so try to be quick. ITEM REWARD: A HEAVY WEIGHT / NOTHING! CHALLENGE 8 - The Scorpion SLAM?: Yes, can Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Quite a Few MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push your crush bar up Okay, he is a very hard enemy. He uses his crush bar at groups of 30 at the start, followed by 20 and then whenever he can. The way to beat him is no secret, use your crush bar WHENEVER you can. Hopefully, you will keep pushing yours down and his up. Luckily, if you get chain combos, your score will skyrocket, this is great. Don't be afraid to use some items on him, but stick to heavy weights and antidotes, save the magic bells, if you have any. ITEM REWARD: HEAVY WEIGHT CHALLENGE 9 - The Witch? SLAM?: Yes, can Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Quite a few MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push her crush bar down Okay, well witch woman here will use her crush bar at EVERY chance she can get. When she gets greater than 10 points she will use it. So, whenever she uses it, you should use it. You need to use your crush bar EVERY time she does, or she will quickly get to move you up further with her crush bar. Now, when a magic jewel comes, quickly use it to push her up and then use the crush bar, followed by quickly getting more points to beat her with another crush bar. She isn't as hard as some of the other enemies. She will use her Magic Jewel to lower her crush bar. Also beware, she is a faster player than the others. CHALLENGE 10 - The Mummy SLAM?: Yes, can Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Alot MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down / To push yours up Let me put it this way, this guy is real fast. He can do chain combos really, really well and can accumulate points really quick, he will also use his magic jewel to push your crush bar up. Now defeating him is so tough as he will push your crush bar up about 7 times in the space of three goes! Now, that is fast. He also gets through his jewels faster than you as he knows exactly where to place them. What I suggest you do is use as many crush bars as you can and when the magic jewel comes, use it to push down your crush bar. That way, you are both offensive and defensive. If you have any items here at all, it's best to use them. Once you have beaten him, you have beaten the game! Or have you? If you are in normal mode, you get the "bad" ending, you find no treasure, but it appears that you selected the wrong entrance, yep, you know what that means, you have to go through the hard entrance! But you still get to watch the credits! HARD MODE WALKTHROUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the final part of the game. All enemies have been made tougher! CHALLENGE NUMBER 1 - The Spider SLAM?: A very slow one SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Little (but still some) MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down He still is fairly easy, but he can slam, just not very fast! Use the same strategy as before, get a group of 30 points, use the crush bar, then get loads of 20 or 30 points and use it again. ITEM REWARD: AN HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 2 - The Bat SLAM?: Yes, but a very slow one SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: None above 3 MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down No harder. Use the same strategy as the spider. ITEM REWARD: AN HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 3 - The Skeleton SLAM?: No Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down This time, he can set up chain combos and will push up your crush bar quite a bit. But by now you should be a good Columns player, so I suggest that you gain loads of points and push up his crush bar as much as possible. ITEM REWARD: A MAGIC GEM CHALLENGE NUMBER 4 - The Treasure Chest SLAM?: Speed boost at start, during this time, will slam for 6 moves after, a fairly slow slam. SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down Ok, the speed boost hasn't changed (thank god), so this time, just get points and use the crush bar continuously. Once you complete normal mode 3 times and play with somebody, you will have no problem beating this guy. ITEM REWARD: RANDOM ITEM OR NOTHING BUT NOT HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 5 - The Ghost SLAM?: Yes, can Slam SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down In hard mode there isn't much point of a walkthrough, CONTINUOUS CRUSH BARS!! ITEM REWARD: RANDOM ITEM OR NOTHING BUT NOT HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 6 - The Snake SLAM?: Yes SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down Okay, this is where things get a little different, due to the snake only using the crush bar when you do, it's best to use as MANY crush bars as you can BEFORE he gets to 10 points, when he does, stop using it, then accumulate as many points as you can, best is 30, and wait for the magic jewel. When this comes, use it to push up his crush bar, he will use the crush bar and use up all of his points (which will be 30), now use your crush bar. This pushes him up by 3 (if 30 points were gained). Now that the snake has no points once again, use continuous crush bars before he gets to 10 points then repeat the process. ITEM REWARD: RANDOM ITEM OR NOTHING BUT NOT HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 7 - The Zombie Thing SLAM?: Yes SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: More than in normal mode / Above Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down Now that the snake is out of the way, it's back to a continuous crush bar fest, do as many as you can and quick! This time it doesn't seem so easy to do though, he can occasionally come with a few chain combos and then surprise you. Careful now. ITEM REWARD: RANDOM ITEM OR NOTHING BUT NOT HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 8 - The Scorpion SLAM?: Yes SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Little MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down Ok, remember how hard he was last time, all I can say is use your crush bar whenever you can, try to meditate to get lucky, become psychic and predict where chain combos will occur. Or you could just do your best, and I think that's the easier option. Use crush bars whenever possible no matter how small as they do push yours down too. ITEM REWARD: RANDOM ITEM OR NOTHING BUT NOT HOURGLASS CHALLENGE NUMBER 9 - The Witch SLAM?: Yes SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Uh-huh, above occasional MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push her crush bar down / eliminate colour of jewels So, what can you do, she uses crush bars whenever she can and as she gets points quick, so what can you do? Use items like heavy weights, and barriers, but try to save them, you will need them. ITEM REWARD: RANDOM ITEM OR NOTHING BUT NOT HOURGLASS CHALLENGE 10 - The Mummy SLAM?: Yes SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Frequent (groan) MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down / yours up Okay, okay, okay. What can you do against the thing that is so fast you can't keep up with him. He is always scoring "break through's" and always using his crush bar against you. Good Luck! There isn't anything I can really tell you, apart from, use barriers/heavy weights/magic gems. ITEM REWARD: RANDOM ITEM OR NOTHING BUT NOT HOURGLASS THE FINAL CHALLENGE - THE SPHINX SLAM?: ALWAYS!!!!! SHUFFLE?: Yes CHAIN COMBOS?: Very Frequent (groan) MAGIC JEWEL USAGE?: To push his crush bar down / yours up What can I say. This guy/girl will ALWAYS slam, he has the speed boost of that treasure chest, only that it lasts for the whole match! And with very frequent chain combos, you can't expect to win very easily. Use heavy weights and barriers and magic bells and antidotes and magic gems and anything else you can find, after all, it is the last battle. "EXCELLENT! NOW GO INTO THIS ROOM. YOU'VE EARNED IT!" CONGRATULATIONS!!! You gain all of the jewels and have successfully completed Columns 3! Now have some fun at beating all of your friends really easy with the experience you've gained from this! Oh and if you must know, I did actually use the game genie code to push crush bars up by 8 to beat the witch, mummy and sphinx. What? What could I have done without it? It wasn't cheating...Okay, well maybe it was, but it's so hard I couldn't blame you for doing it, PROVIDING, you at least make it to the witch without it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 3 - Tactics :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- a.) The Crush Bar The Crush bar is a very useful thing, let me teach you some ways of using it effectively. Defensive Crush - Accumulate as many points as possible and then wait for your opponent to use their crush bar, then use yours. This will make sure that they end up with at LEAST an equal crush bar as yours. Magic Crush - Shuffle a magic jewel twice so that it pushes up your opponent's crush bar when it touches something, and after it does, then use your points to push it up. You can push it up by a maximum of five bars here. Double Down Up Crush - This again uses the Magic Jewel. If your crush bar is pretty high, use the magic jewel without shuffling to push your crush bar down and then use your crush bar, your crush bar should have moved down pretty sharply and your opponent's up. b.) Chain Reactions These things are when jewels disappear consecutively, see the diagram below for an example. You can even use this example in the game for a nice 2-x chain reaction. __________________ | | | | | | | | | | | | R- Red Jewel | | G- Green Jewel | | B- Blue Jewel | _ | Y- Yellow Jewel | |P| | P- Purple Jewel | |Y| | | |G| | | | | |R|B|B| |________|G|G|R|R| Now, if the set of jewels displayed is dropped straight down, the green one in the set will form a row of three green jewels, the green jewels will disappear, now the red jewel above that green will fall down and make another set of 3 jewels, only this time, red. Every time you make a chain combo, the score you get doubles with each consecutive set. When you do a 3 x Chain Combo, you get a flashing jewel, they are explained next. If you have a good example of an easy 3 x chain combo, send it to me, you will be credited. c.) Flash Jewel These are wonderful little things, if you perform a 3 x Chain Combo, you get one of these, or you may just be very lucky enough to get a free one (the free ones always appear at the bottom of the playing area though). If you involve this jewel in a set of the same colour and make it disappear, it can do some horrible things to your opponent. It does not matter about the colour of the flashing jewel, all the effects are decided as random. Effect 1: This effect makes you play upside down! This can be tough, but there is a problem, the playing area looks bigger here, but when it returns you see it's not and start to panic and you may lose control! Effect 2: This effect turns your playing area black and white. Because the green and blue jewels look identical, as do the red and purple, this can cause some problems. Effect 3: This effect cause left to become right and right to become left. A very nasty one. Effect 4: This effect prevents you from shuffling jewels! This one is very, very annoying! Effect 5: INFOR FROM JAMES ZIEGELMUELLER: "I believe the Flash Jewel 'Effect 5' makes your opponent's jewels drop down as if they had down on the d-pad toggled. But this is the only effect that lasts until you lose the game. It's actually quite a challenge since my friend and I get this effect the most." Effect 6: This one pushes up your opponents crush bar by 2 bars (I think). Very nasty when you have 30 points and a magic jewel at your disposal... d.) Multiplayer Information Ok, ok, here's what happens in the multiplayer modes. You get the choice out of best of 3, best of 5, or best of 7. I always go for 7, but that's just me. You get the choice out of 5 stages. Here they are: Stage 1: A real cooky Egyptian desert stage, with really weird music. But it does get catchy after a while. Stage 2: A mountainous grey stage, with absolutely ridiculous music (in my opinion). Stage 3: My FAVOURITE STAGE!!!!! Remember the old single player mode on the menu screen in the original columns? The blueish stage??? With the classic music? Well, it has returned!!! Don't worry, the stage is some Egyptian pyroscript (or something) AND THE MUSIC HAS BEEN REMIXED!!!!! Because it's a multiplayer stage, the music has been remixed in such a way that it makes the players very motivated, try it, it sounds cool!!! Stage 4: Oh boy! This stage is my second favourite and takes place at a beach just at dusk. It's done Caribbean style and you play with fruits!!!!! The red jewels become cherry's the orange jewels become oranges the green jewels become melons, the yellow jewels become bananas the blue jewels become grapes and the purple jewels become some other tear shape fruit. The music is also Caribbean and there are new sound effects!!!!! Stage 5: This takes place in a technology like factory I think. The music is really weird and boring after a while, the sound effects are nice, but you play with industrial DIY tools, such as nails, screws springs and nuts. It does get confusing really as about 3 of them look very, very similar. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 4 - Contacting Me ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- a.)
