What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (7/15/10): The first version. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Football Frenzy is a very simple and straightforward American football game. It is extremely basic, using only two buttons for most actions. Unfortunately for you, it is almost too simple, since there are no advanced plays or actions (no diving, jumping, spinning). However, being this is an arcade game straight through, it works out well. The only drawback is how you need to pay a credit for each quarter of the game! The gameplay itself is easy to pick up on, albeit a bit clunky, complete with a tough computer opponent. It is a lot of fun when playing with another human player, but it leaves a lot to be desired in the single player mode (the "tournament" consists of only three games!). Nonetheless, for a simple arcade romp and nothing else, this may be worth your time. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ============== Gameplay Modes ============== When you press Start on the title screen, you will go to a play selection screen. You can choose to play against the computer in a tournament style bracket, or play a single game against a second human player. The next screen allows you to choose the difficulty setting (Easy, Normal, Hard, MVS) by using Up/Down. Move Right to reach the time settings for each quarter, and Up/Down to adjust them (1:30, 3:00, 5:00, 10:00). After that, you will have the chance to load saved data if you want to continue a previously saved game. If you choose to start a new game, you will be able to pick from a list of 10 teams. There are no statistics, sadly, so you will find no differences between the different teams apart from their names. They are: Wolves Scuds Pitbulls Cobras Bullets Bisons Rhinos Vipers Crushers Hit Men After a team is selected, the game will begin. If you are playing against the computer, you will see the 8-team bracket set up, and you will begin the game that you control. If the current matchup is against computer opponents only, you will have the option to watch the game progress or not. By saying no, that game will end immediately and the results will be tallied. Essentially, there are only three games you must play in order to win the championship. ============ In-Game Tips ============ As in regular football, the game is divided into four quarters of equal length (which you set earlier). A MAJOR flaw of this game is that at the end of each quarter, you will go to a "Game Over" screen. This is because in the arcade version, you have to pay one credit for EACH quarter! If you are playing the Neo Geo version, simply save your data when prompted and load it after going through the first settings screen after the title. You will then go on to the next quarter/game. At the start of the game, the opponent will be kicking the ball down the field and your team will be receiving it. Once you have possession of the ball, you can start running up the field (press A repeatedly to run faster). Try to avoid the other team as you make your way up the field, but once you get tackled or go out of bounds, the play ends. You then go to a playbook screen, where you can select from a standard list of 16 plays to follow, eight passing (plan to pass the ball down field) plays and eight running (plan to run with the ball after the hike) plays. This is not set in stone; the game is flexible about making plays and you can/should always do your own thing anyway. Each team has the same 16 offensive plays, and likewise eight defensive plays. There are also two kicking plays when appropriate (punting down field at the fourth down, or attempt to kick a field goal). At the line of scrimmage, you will get to see the formation of the teams at the line. Press A to hike the ball back to your quarterback. As a note, the player with the ball will ALWAYS be designated as 1P, 2P, or COM. If you are on offense, three other players will have letters above their heads (B, C, D). If you press that button while facing the player, you will pass to them. To catch the ball, you simply need to be where the ball is going to land; be careful since the game tends to make you move, causing you to miss the ball! When you are on defense, you can press B to switch control to another player. This comes in handy when you see what play the offense may attempt, so you can try to position yourself accordingly. If you are familiar with football, there are units of measurement called "downs". You start at the first down, and you have a total of four chances to gain 10 yards. If you gain 10 yards from the line of scrimmage, it resets to the first down and you repeat. You reach the next down by having an incomplete pass or not moving up the 10 yards in that play. If you lose ground, that will be calculated as well. So, if you move up six yards on the first play, the second down will only require you to go another four yards to get the first down. Likewise, if you get knocked back five yards on the first down play, you now have to gain 15 yards to reach the next first down. If you reach the end zone, you will score a touchdown (6 points). At that point, you will have a chance to make one more play to gain additional points. You can either kick a field goal (1 point) or attempt to run/pass it into the end zone again (2 points). Following this, the ball is turned over and you kick it off to the other team (press A repeatedly to fill the kick meter, giving the kick more power). The game then continues. During the plays, it is possible to intercept the ball from the offensive team. Simply get in the way of a pass and you will likely catch it, at which point you should quickly run towards your team's goal! To stop the offense, you run at the player holding the ball and press B to attempt a tackle. If that player drops the ball, it is known as a fumble, and if the opposing team retrieves it, a turn over occurs.
