I apologize to all of you who waited so patiently for this walkthrough. It is finally done now that I am actually on break. There are still a few touches left. The next (and final?) version will include a table explaining aircraft designations, a few of the content sections will be switched around for more convenience (e.g. FAQ first), and the enemy specifications will either be finished or disappear entirely, depending on demand for completion of that section. Until then, I am humbled by your continued patronage! - Added update section - Mission 21: Solitaire, in depth - Added aircraft schematics - Finished medals - Started secrets section (in depth coming soon) Note: I have completed the game with all unlocks -------------- Introduction -------------- A couple days after purchasing Ace Combat 5 I browsed gamefaqs.com to look for any secrets or medals I had missed after playing a couple times through. To my surprise, there was no faq for this game. Having frequented many previous faqs, I figured I more or less knew what constituted a good faq and decided to try my own hand at making one. Therefore, I bring you the first (assuming someone doesn't post right before me), most in-depth, and most useful guide for Ace Combat 5. Enjoy, and as always, any questions and comments are welcome. ** denotes "Coming Soon" ============================================================================= 2. -= Combat Strategies =- ============================================================================= ------------------ Basic Techniques ------------------ Cone of Vulnerability: The absolute best way to take out an enemy is to fly directly behind him, about 300-100 ft away, entering what is called his cone of vulnerability. Here you can use guns to rip him to pieces, or try your hand at popping off a missile or two. Missile Technique: If you fire every time you get a lock, you'll definitely empty your arsenal. When behind the enemy, you want him to be going straight, and not turning at all. All it takes is a slight juke and your missile is trashed. Once you get in a lock behind him, hesistate, trying to figure out what his next move is gonna be. If he starts to pull an arc, just follow the arc and wait for him to level out. Once you have a level shot, THEN unleash with missiles. Learning when your opponent is about to turn is crucial. --------------------- Advanced Techniques --------------------- Stiffarming: There are a lot of times where you're heading straight into an oncoming enemy jet. This technique is known as stiffarming (so I affectionately call it). To do it, you play chicken with the enemy. Fly straight at him, hitting afterburners. Time his approach. Once you get missile lock, wait until about a second before you become one with his canopy. Once he's really close, drop a couple of missiles and pull UP, but no more that 30 degrees. The missiles should, with practice, smash straight into his canopy. By pulling up, you won't wind up being torn to pieces by the shrapnel. Once mastered, this is an extraordinarily effective technique. Also, XAAM can take out multiple oncoming enemies using this technique. Rudder Reversal: So let's say you're running away from an enemy, or following one and you have an enemy in your cone of vulnerability. He's getting annoying, and you're dodging vulcan and missile locks left and right. Want to take care of him? Get some speed up. You want him using his afterburners to chase you down. Once you've got him closing on you with some speed (+700 mph), nose up about 30 degrees while slamming on the air-brakes. He should rocket past you. Nose down level and slam on the afts again. Now you've got him in prime missile lock right in front of you, hence the reversal. - ============================================================================= 3. -= Walkthrough =- ============================================================================= Please note! Recommended aircraft titles are NOT the same titles shared by the AC5 game. A fighter is a high-maneuverability aircraft good in dogfighting (e.g. F-22). The attacker is a potent bomber with high defense. The anti-ship attacker is a fast aircraft carrying a LASM (F/A-18). The blitzer is a high-speed, anti-aircraft fighter (think Mig-31). A table of aircraft and their corresponding designations is located directly below the walkthrough. ----------------------- Mission 1: Shorebirds ----------------------- Recommended Aircraft: Objectives: Follow the lead aircraft (HTBRK ONE) closely. Hold your fire until further orders. *Destroy all indicated targets (TGT). You start off the mission flying tail for your squadron, Heartbreak 1. Bartlett nicknames you Kid, which you will be known for during the rest of the mission. Punch your speed up a little bit to keep up with the group, but be careful; when Bartlett gets a read on the enemy, the squadron will brake and bank right. You don't want to fly up their exhaust and have a quick mission end. Follow your guys around until Thunderhead warns you of four incoming fighters. Hold your fire and steer up above the first wave of fire from the enemy. Bartlett countermands the hold-fire order, and your mission objectives update. These four should be good dogfighting practice. A few more MIG bogeys will join in, but they're nothing you can't handle (hopefully). Take them out and mission's over. --------------------- Mission 2: Open War --------------------- Recommended Aircraft: Objectives: Follow the lead aircraft (HTBRK ONE) closely. Destroy all Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) *Destroy all indicated targets (TGT). You're stuck again flying the F-5E. Bartlett turns you loose to wreak havoc on those UAVs, so AB ahead and get behind the first pair. Try not to go too fast on your approach (500 mph); you'll lose time if you overshoot and have to circle around again. Shoot all 4 down with missiles, and AB ahead to the next pair. Rinse and repeat 4 more times. Don't shoot/bomb the ship just yet. Once you've hit the last pair, a fighter squadron will fly in. Get back to the group and wait for Bartlett to give the open-fire order. Make short work of the squadron and watch the cutscene. The ship launches a SAM at Nagase. Bartlett crosses to get the missile to follow his heat signiture instead. It grazes his wing, and he ejects. Thunderhead tells you to return to base and leave Bartlett for the rescue team. -------------------------- Mission 3: Narrow Margin -------------------------- Recommended Aircraft: Objectives: Protect the aircraft carrier KESTREL from enemy attack as it escapes from port. *Protect the aircraft carrier KESTREL from enemy attack as it escapes to open water. It seems that Yuktobania has declared war on Osea, launching a preeminant attack on Osea's naval fleet. Thunderhead declares Edge to be the leader, but she declines, letting you try your hand at commands. Captain Snow will shoot past you in his F-14. Although he's not a part of your formation, he'll be helping you out. First thing, tell your wingmen to disperse by clicking left on the D-pad twice (once to engage the order command, once again to assign a specific command). Chopper will explain if you select "no" when he asks if you know how to give commands. A few A-6Es will be easy food for your missles/guns, so get behind them and take them out. More will come in from the west, north, and south. Engage and destroy. Basically just keep the attackers from flying over the Kestrel, and you'll be fine. Once done with the attack craft, you'll be moved out to sea. Watch out for the incoming NIMROD bombers. They should be your first priority. Leave the F-4s to your teammates (unless you want the extra points) and focus on taking out the blockade. Your UGBs will be minimally effective on the fast-moving ships, so try to stick to missiles and guns. Try to take out the F-14 Zipano if you come across it. Once the ships are all destroyed, the mission's over. ------------------------- Mission 4: First Flight ------------------------- Recommended aircraft: Objectives: Destroy all indicated targets (TGT). *Protect Grimm (ARCHER) from enemy attack as he takes off. The Yukes are bombing the runway. Skip takeoff if you want. I think they're fun, personally. Once you're in the air, stiffarm one of the two F-4s in front of you. Dogfight until you see the B1-Bs, and take them on. They aren't very maneuverable but they can take a beating, so sit behind them and gun them to take them out fast. A nugget named Grimm will try to take off. Provide air support by taking out the enemy fighters. Take out any remaining bombers. A friendly will try to land, but will get shot up by the Yukes. Take out the last wave of bombers, and your done. Grimm will take place of the missing Captain Bartlett. ----------------------- Mission 5: Rendezvous ----------------------- Recommended aircraft: any available fighters (see table) Objectives: Protect the 3 aircraft carriers including the KESTREL from enemy attack. Three harriers will approach from 70 degrees (NE) at about 10,000 feet. Meet and destroy. More will come from the ocean (W) at low altitude. Then they start pouring in. Just dogfight and kill. At some point AWACS will warn you about incoming anti-ship fighters, 3 F-35s coming in from the east. AB to them and take them out as quickly as possible. Once they're out, you'll switch to a cutscene. A ballistic missile will explode in all sorts of pretty colors, taking out one of your carriers. Once you get control, get up to +5000 feet in altitude to avoid becoming one crispy critter. The second one explodes underneath you, sinking the Vulture. The Kestrel will be the only remaining carrier. After this, you're done. -------------------------------- Mission 6: White Bird (Part I) -------------------------------- Recommended aircraft: Objectives: Destroy all indicated targets (TGT). Prevent the enemy (TGT) from reaching the mass driver. *Protect the mass driver from enemy fire until the SSTO launch is complete. You're protecting the Arkbird, a variable orbit spaceship that's going to pick up a laser weapon to help Osea. Unfortunately, the Yukes don't want you launching that laser, so they're going to try to attack the mass driver. As soon as you start, lock on to the C-130 and destroy it immediately. Otherwise it will start dropping tanks, which are much easier to destroy in the air than on the ground. Your primary targets are the ground tanks, so taking out the C-130s will help. Don't bother with anything else. Once all the tanks are gone you get to shoot down cruise missiles. Fun! Keep close to the mass driver and shoot down any incoming missiles. They're the circled enemies on your radar. You'd be hard pressed to get all of them, but try to get as many as possible. Stiffarming is a helpful maneuver against them. Once the countdown is complete, the SSTO launches, and you can finally relax. ---------------------- Mission 7: Frontline ---------------------- Recommended aircraft: anti-ship attackers Objectives: Prevent the enemy (HOVERCRAFT, AH-64) from advancing east. Prevent the enemy fleet from firing on Sand Island. This mission is pretty simple despite the number of targets and occasional missile burst. W-eave westward, taking out hovercrafts and helecopters as you go. About halfway through your attack you'll be warned about an incoming sub missile like those that took out the carriers. Don't worry about getting above the 5,000 foot floor. Our friend the arkbird will be using that laser we protected last mission to blow it up. Keep working on that fleet, but save a few LASMs for later. The arkbird will take out the second missile, but by now the enemy's figured out what's going on. They launch 3 missiles simultaneously, so you're going to want to hit that 5,000' floor altitude pretty quick. When you hear the countdown start from Thunderhead, point straight up and punch it. Watch the fireworks show (and the unfortunate demise of rookie pilots) before going back down and mopping up the last of the Yuke fleet. Try to get them all, because once the Arkbird punches a hole in the Scinfaxi, they all disappear. Once the Scinfaxi surfaces, use the rest of your LASM to take out the SAMs and launcher. Annoyingly, the sub will keep launching those missiles, so any time you get a warning, don't delay in getting above the attack ceiling. As tempting as it might be, don't get sucked down below 5,000 feet by enemy fighters. Just hang out until the coast is clear, and resume attacking. After pummelling it with pretty much half of your arsenal, the Scinfaxi will finally explode. ---------------------------- Mission 8: Handful of Hope ---------------------------- Recommended Aircraft: fighters Objectives: Since when are patrols ever just patrols in this game? A transport plane codenamed Mother Goose 1 wants help getting through the AA field because they're radar system is out and their top secret status means that they aren't recognized as a friendly by the AA system. Flying through the field is pretty easy; technically all you have to do is avoid the big circles. Just keep in mind that the transport plane is a whole lot more sluggish than your fighter. Go slow and use your yaw (L2, R2) to change direction, and you won't outmaneuver your escortee. When you enter the field, choose the right path. It will take you through a u-turn, and finally out the top of the field. There's one section near the very end of the field that can be a little tight. Just slip through on the right side and you should be fine. Once you're out, Chopper and Grimm will meet up with you to help you deal with those fighters. Engage and protect the Mother Goose, which seems to have everything going wrong that can go wrong with a plane. The Mother Goose is going to perform an emergency landing, and you're going to have to take out any obstructions on the ground. Fly slow and take the windmills out with missiles. They appear gradually on your IFF, so don't take out the first few and think you're done. Fly several passes until the plane's down. The Ocean Air Force 8492 squadron will come in to pick up the cargo. --------------------- Mission 9: Lit Fuse --------------------- Recommended aircraft: attackers Objectives: Protect the ground forces (CO. A-D) and neutralize enemy defense positions (TGT). Start off by taking out the beach batteries. Then follow the ground forces and take out any bunkers that appear. Take note that bunkers won't stay destroyed. You can only supress them with your attacks. Once you supress them the ground forces can take them out. Keep pummelling bunkers, helecopters, howitzers, and A-10s until all bunkers are destroyed. ------------------------ Mission 10: Blind Spot ------------------------ Recommended aircraft: fighters Objectives: Destroy the target (TGT) before it escapes outside the map. Another easy mission. Notice as you get close to the C-130s that a bajillion of them appear. Look even closer and you'll notice that your IFF is picking up thin air as an enemy. That would be responsible to an enemy E-737 jamming your radar (which is remarkably annoying when trying to use XMAAs). Either take out the jammer or just pay attention as to which box as the plane in it. Another wave will come in, also with jammers. All the while it turns out some Osean squadron is firing on civilians where you're squadron is supposed to be operating. Expect to be under full investigation soon. Take out the rest of the transport and you're done. ----------------------------- Mission 11a: Chain Reaction ----------------------------- Recommended Aircraft: attackers Objectives: Destroy all indicated TGTs The airport is being attacked by the enemy. To your right there are two jets. Feel free to engage them. Once you take out the enemy aircraft, start making your way to the west. An enemy squadron will appear there, so take them out quickly. Once they're out of the way, AB to your ally cluster at the airport. Here comes the fun. Make a quick bombing pass over any of the enemy ground targets. Take as many out as you can. If enemy air support gets too thick, switch over to missiles and take them out. It's basically just one huge dogfight. (The radio chatter lost a bit in translation, didn't it?) Once all of the enemy is gone, you're done. Pretty simple, isn't it? ------------------------- Mission 12a: Powder Keg ------------------------- Recommended Aircraft: anti-ship attackers (large arsenal) Objectives: Destroy all indicated TGTs Adjust your angle of attack when firing into a tunnel Okay, how reminiscent of AC4 is this level?? Now just give me some foxholes to drop bombs in... Anyway, this level can be hairy due to the missiles being constantly fired at you from the forest. You can't take them out, so just avoid them. It's good practice, really. Just take out ground targets, and when you shoot at the tunnels, you have to line up so you can see in them. It's pretty simple, save those rockets, but even they don't seem to be as accurate as SAM fired missiles. The ground targets aren't clustered, so go with an anti-ship aircraft since bombs will be minimally effective. (Is it just me or does the radio chatter seem to be getting worse and worse?) A million targets later, your mission will be accomplished. ----------------------- Mission 11b: Reprisal ----------------------- Recommended aircraft: Objectives: Neutralize the gas. *Persue the terrorists. This is good bombing practice. Disperse and fly around looking for buildings that are pluming with gas and drop a gas neutralizer on them. It's pretty simple. Just avoid flying into the buildings. If you're having trouble figuring out where buildings you left are, just listen to the radio to figure out which bank it's on. There are 30 in all. Once done, follow the terrorist truck, but don't shoot it (as tempting as it might be) because apparently that's not what "assisting the local authorities" means. Instead just follow it around for a while until it attempts to rendezvous with a helecopter at Marvin Bridge. Note that the truck drops off weapons your HUD recognizes on its escape route. You now have 800 gun rounds to eleminate the 8 enemy helecopters that arrive. I did it with 40. Just avoid missiles and buildings and you'll be fine. ---------------------------- Mission 12b: Four Horsemen ---------------------------- Recommended aircraft: attackers (anti-installation) Objectives: Synchronize your attack with your wingmen to destroy all enemy radar sites. Okay, you had it easy for the past missions. Now's where it gets a bit tricky. You have to destroy one part of the enemy's radar network at the exact same time your teammates destroy theirs. And you have to do it 4 times. Matching up the timing can be aggrivating, but I'll walk you through it. At the start of the level, get some speed up and move quickly to the first white target on the outer ring. That's your section of the radar network you need to destroy. Don't delay or you'll fire late. When says "Countdown to 30 seconds... mark" you should be close to 15,000 feet away from the target. Slow up your speed to a little above neutral. 10 seconds you should be about 8,000 feet. Speed up; 5, 4, 3, 2 (should be about 2,000 feet from), And unload just after "1". The timing doesn't have to be exact, but needs to be within a second of the mark. The trick it to not bother with LASMs or long range bombs... just get close to get your timing more accurate. Take out the neighboring control center for points, then fly to the next one at a pretty speedy pace. 20 seconds and you should be about 15,000 feet away 10 seconds should be about 8,000 feet, moving around 800 mph. Unload at 1 from about 2,000 feet and you should be fine. Repeat the same tactic for the next two. The space between the radar stations gets closer, but the timing gets shorter, too, so everything should match up about the same. Just make sure you don't delay at all. That's the one thing that will mess you up the most. If you do wind up going too fast just make some deliberate S curves to slow your approach. Lastly, don't fly right on top of the green radar circle. It can detect you. Your teammates might randomly cancel the attack (why can't you do that? grr!) so don't get tripped up there. Once you get the swing of things and get through the network, you know the drill. Just make your primary targets those planes trying to take off in the back of the facility, and bomb the rest into the stoneage. Once you blow up the buildings, take out the SAMs and AA guns inside. Don't worry, they aren't active. ------------------------------- Mission 13: Demons of Razgriz ------------------------------- Recommended aircraft: anti-ship attackers Objectives: Destroy the Hrimfaxi This mission isn't too bad. You just have one "boss" to take care of. AB along the riverway to the first sub and take him out with an LASM. Keep ABing to the Hrimfaxi and pop off one missile. It will dive. Stick around for a second and the restock sub will surface for an easy kill. AB to the closest sub and try to take it out before a cutscene takes over. Once the Hrimfaxi surfaces again, you'll be repositioned above it in the air. Focus on taking out the SAMs, launcher, and AA guns, then take out the UAVs at leisure. A picket sub might pop up every now and then, but destroy it quick because they like to stay submerged. Basically just take bombing runs at the Hrimfaxi and pull up to 5000+ feet whenever it launches a missile. Hit it enough and it will stay surfaced, which makes for an easy finish. ---------------------- Mission 14: Ice Cage ---------------------- Recommended aircraft: fighters Objectives: Find and destroy all targets (TGT) located throughout the map. *Protect the SEA GOBLIN helicopter team. Run straight until you tally ho on two bandits. Wax them and move to the center of the map. Two more pairs should appear. They won't give you any trouble since they don't notice your presence. Basically your job is to fly through the fog, scan the map, and eliminate any enemies you find. Chopper will let you know how many planes are left at some point. All but 5 are around the middle. Search south and southeast for the others. Once the patrols have been taken care of, AB to your insertion point where the helicopter team is about to run into a wall of enemy ground installations. Fly in a line and take them out. Keep close to the airlift team and take out any newly emerging targets. The CH-48s will touch down and pick up the POWs. Nagase gets hit by a SAM and has to bail out. The gunship escort protecting the CH-47s will try to pick her up, but the bad weather will force her to crash. You can't do anything, so you'll just have to wait until next misison. ------------------------- Mission 15: White Noise ------------------------- Recommended aircraft: fighters / blitzers Objectives: Search for Nagase (EDGE) by following the distress beacon signal. *Protect the SEA GOBLIN helicopter team. Okay, here's how this works. That annoying beepy thing is a locator. You want it to beep as high pitched as it gets (the bars on the two sides will get close or touch) and you want to fly in a direction that makes the tempo faster. Her position changes so there's no specific bearing to follow. Don't bother to engage enemy aircraft, just fly towards the signal. As the tempo picks up and you get close, an E-767 will jam your radar. Fly up and take it out. Then reposition yourself to find Nagase's bearing (get the "cheep cheep" sound) again and fly until the beeping gets rediculously fast. Once you find her she'll shout "Blaze!" and your mission will update. AB over to the copter and take out the ground installations. Fly close to Sea Goblin, because it won't take much for it to get knocked out of the sky. Provide air cover until the extraction is complete. --------------------------- Mission 16a: Desert Arrow --------------------------- Recommended aircraft: fighters Objectives: Score at least 10000 points within the time limit Continue to destroy enemy forces until time runs out This mission will have you running back and forth between two locations. I suggest breaking to the left for the first run. Shoot down aircraft here, then move to the north. Some AC-130s will appear, so shoot them down quick (guns help due to their armor). Go north and take out any fighters left up there before your bombers start complaining too bitterly. XMAAs come in real handy against any appearing squadrons. Keep up the attack and you should hit 10,000 with plenty of time to spare. Eventually your friendly forces will reach their intended targets. The airfield and HQ will make you wish you brought bombs... so beautifully clustered... *cry*. Just watch the flak guns, and SAVE YOUR MISSILES. Use them only when you really really want those points. Once the time's out, an AWACS squadron will appear. Take out any escort, the refuel plane, and the two E-767s, and you're done. ------------------------------- Mission 16b: Desert Lightning ------------------------------- Recommended aircraft: attackers Objectives: Score at least 10,000 points within the time limit Continue to destroy enemy forces until time runs out. Get a plane with plenty of ammo. Save your secondary spread bombs for the installations and just use guns/missiles on the tanks. The squadron command "attack" will be extremely useful. It's plenty easy. Once the timer's out you get to take on a battleship. It's no worse than the submarines from before, so fly over, avoid missiles, and destroy the rest. -------------------------- Mission 17: Journey Home -------------------------- Recommended aircraft: fighters Objectives: Follow your wingmen closely Formation flying isn't as difficult as it may seem. The game is very forgiving as to what it will allow. Basically just fly straight, match your speed with your teammates, and keep your nose pointed on Edge. You'll go up, down, up, down, roll to 90, roll to 180, roll to 270, level out (rolling is optional), pass the stadium, pull a half loop and level out, AB forward, and everyone will cross in a cool pattern over the stadium. But of course this wouldn't be Ace COMBAT 5 if this was just a performance flying run. After the cutscene, enemies will approach. Dogfight time! There's no enemy limit, just a time limit, so have fun racking up points. Once the F-117s appear, take them out before dealing with the remainder of the enemies. Then, well, watch for yourself. ---------------------- Mission 18: Fortress ---------------------- Recommended Aircraft: blitzers/anything with a large reserve [wicked_kustumz recommends the JAS-39C] Objectives: Protect the allied ground forces (FRND) as they storm the enemy fortress Personally I would advise you avoid taking attackers; you're going to be dealing with a lot of air attackers, and the ground targets aren't clustered well enough to justify having bombs as your secondary. Stiffarm the first two attackers, then drop down and clear out those pillboxes lining the trench your ground troops are going through. Finish up anything at the entrance, including the two control towers over the gate. At some point they'll request to move in. Tell them yes, and get down to the entrance and take out those tanks. You can strafe them with guns before they even show up on your HUD if you look closely. The SAMs on top of the bunkers might give you trouble, so take them out if you find your screen's red all the time. Also make sure not to fly over AA guns since they'll tear you apart. Your primary concern should be protecting the ground troops, but try to take out any aircraft launching from the runway. Once through, the ground forces will prompt to go outside. Choose yes, then take out the tanks waiting outside the complex near the back (northern) entrance. The control towers will also fire on your tanks, so take them out too. If you run out of guns and missiles, you can always dummy fire your secondary weapons into stationary targets. After they get through, you're done... ...Or are you? ------------------- Mission 18+: 8492 ------------------- Recommended aircraft: Mission Objectives: Follow the 8492nd Squadron (8492) *Escape to the east Pretty simple, just follow your squadron to the refueling plane... Until you get attacked by an enemy squadron, and there are a shitload of them. Duck immediately when your screen turns red or you'll be eating a missile warhead for dinner. Don't ever worry about stiffarming incoming enemies because you'll just wind up flying into a wall of enemy missiles. Just try to AB to the other side, ducking and weaving so you're hard to lock onto. Keep an eye on your six as you fly; when the enemy starts catching up and flies within missile range, slam on the airbrakes and have him rocket past you, then light him up like a Christmas tree. Take any risks to get east, but remember, speed is your friend, and missiles are your enemy. Don't bother flying low into the mountains, it'll just slow you up and give you something to slam into when you're watching that missile riding up your exhaust. Interesting twist isn't it? -------------------------- Mission 19: Final Option -------------------------- Recommended aircraft: Objectives: Follow POPS closely. Formation flying! Well sort of. It's more follow the leader. This is really easy if you have any flight maneuvering skills. Pops changes his speed a lot, so just don't sit right on his tail unless you want to slam into the back of him. As long as you stay behind Pops the enemy fighters won't lock onto you. The second cave's fun. Just don't make any sudden changes and you'll be fine. Take advantage of your yaw so you don't wind up dropping into the ground from the lack of lift when you roll. Oh, and watch the crane when you go in. An old friend will show up at the end of the tunnel. Just keep flying and watch. --------------------------- Mission 20: Ancient Walls --------------------------- Recommended aircraft: F-35C, F/A-18C, F-14C, RAFALE M Objectives: Protect the SEA GOBLIN helicopter team and the rescue squad (FRND) as they retrieve the president. Given the circumstances, you'll now be stationed on the Kestrel. You get to escort Sea Goblin to help extract the president from enemy territory. Captain Snow, callsign SWORDSMAN, is going to be teaming up with your squad. The ground targets are pretty spread out, so just use missiles or guns to deal with them. Watch the tanks that come out of the front of the castle, since they'll have a prime spot to take out the helicopters. Once the troops get to the president, they'll need you to break down part of the wall. Take it out, and then provide air support against the enemy planes. ----------------------- Mission 21: Solitaire ----------------------- Recommended aircraft : fighters If I had a penny for every request for this mission... You start off the mission alone and with no weaponry to speak of. You have to fly through the enemy radar screen, much like the Handful of Hope mission. The one difference is that at high altitudes there's no way through the screen. However, if you drop down to lower altitudes (-400 feet), the radar circles will diminish in size, allowing you room to pass through. So, drop down to the river, and the first split you get to when the radar screen starts, take the right path. Keep low, follow the river as best you can, and avoid the circles. It's pretty easy until the very end, where there's a tight squeeze through the radar. Once your through, slam on your airbrakes. Before the first picture you will need to loop around while Pops does his explanation. The picture should include BOTH transport planes and the mine entrance! Take it flying north, then loop off to the left and arc into a 180 degree turn. A cutscene will flash shortly and two fighters will appear on your HUD. Snap a shot of them before they take off. You should be lined up perfectly. Just look at my bad ASCII art diagram below. M M = mine T = transport __________ T [][] T [] [] = buildings n' stuff 180-> / ========\=============== = \_______X---|---F--F------- - = runway =========|============== = | X = place to take pics | X ___| loop-> / \ \__/| | P= target plane M= mine shaft Still having problems with pictures? Follow this checklist 1) Do you have both planes and the mineshaft in the picture? 2) Are you at a low enough altitude? 300 ft is good 3) Are the objects big enough in your picture? If they look like dots, it's no good. Pretend you're one of those stalker guys who goes around photographing targets... make it crisp, big, and identifiable. --------------------- Mission 22: Closure --------------------- Recommended aircraft: attackers Objectives: Watch for enemy forces and head to the mine *? You're baaaaack. But now you get to blow everything up! Fly down the riverline and blow up all the towers and boats. Once you get to the river fork, try to take out the jets taking off on the runway. Now just have fun with the ground targets. Save a very substantial ammo supply to take out the rock cliff though. Once you get around 10 missiles, 200 guns, and 2 special, take out the cliff face. Just don't fly into it. ------------------------------- Mission 23: Ghosts of Razgriz ------------------------------- Recommended aircraft: blitzers (SAAM) Objectives: Destroy all indicated TGTs Canyon time! Hope you're maneuverable. This mission is basically just flying one-time-passes and shooting down helecopters. Go around the canyon and shoot everything down. Oh, don't fly above the canyon walls either, unless you want to be SAM fodder. Keep your speed up or those enemy jets will send missiles up your exhaust. Just take a big long loop, making sure to hit every target on the first run. Once you're done, a trained enemy squadron will appear. These guys are quick, and shooting them down is like trying to hit a fly with a rocket launcher. My advice is to get them on a not so curvy stretch, line them up with a SAM, and hold them in lock. If they go around a corner, so will your missile (hopefully). Trust me, it's much quicker than trying to hold inside their CV. Take them out and the mission ends. ---------------------------------- Mission 24: White Bird (Part II) ---------------------------------- Recommended Aircraft: blitzers Objectives: This mission can be difficult if you're not familiar with how to deal with the arkbird. Climb to meet the arkbird after the jettison clip. Line up straight behind the arkbird, match speed, and fire a single missile at the underbelly. Once they give the command to launch the vogels, drop down below the back of the arkbird and fire off a couple of shots at the launchers. Shoot about 2 or 3 pairs of missiles, then pull up ABOVE the back of the arkbird. The arkbird's laser can seemingly fire in more directions than straight down. Once it goes off, drop back down and focus your fire on the laser. After a few seconds, pop back up. There's a pattern to the laser fire, so just learn it (it might take a few trial runs so don't get frusterated). Keep going up and down until you destroy it. The UAVs might cause you some problems, so keep a close eye on your radar. If one sits in right on your tail and has you in missile lock warning, slam on the brakes, let it pass you, lock on, and blow it out of the sky. If a missile is on you then pull up and away. You can catch up with the arkbird after the missile passes. Since the launchers are on the front, you'll need to drop down way below to get a good shot off. The arkbird will ignite its engines, so take those out next. It'll start falling before changing course. It will ignite secondary engines, SAMs, and power up a burst laser on the top. Take out the laser first again, then the SAMs, and the engines to boot. If you get nervous about your missile supply, use guns. Just don't stay RIGHT on top of the arkbird. It will plummet to about 1500 feet before switching on its auxiliary engine (good lord how many engines does this thing have???) By now you should be familiar with the process, and since this is the last target, unload all you've got. ---------------------------- Mission 25: Heartbreak One ---------------------------- Recommended aircraft: fighters / multirole Objectives: Protect the vehicle (HTBRK ONE) until it reaches the airfield. You might want to take something with a low-yield bomb if you're not comfortable using guns. You'll be up against clustered ground targets and eventually enemy fighters. Follow your ground friendlies and shoot down the jet that appears. You'll be asked whether or not you want to take the shorter, more heavily defended route. If you're confident, take the shorter route. It's not necessary timewise but I found taking the shorter route all three times was more than easy. A couple of choppers will appear, so take them out before the convoy reaches the checkpoint. Loop around and knock out the tower and gate. There are some howitzers on the hill so hit those next. Now the fun comes. Checkpoints galore, helecopters, and the lot pop up on radar. Take everything hostile out, including the APCs trailing the convoy. Just keep an eye on your friends down there and you should be square. Get them all the way to the airfield. Juggle between AK-64s, AC-130 gunships, Howitzers, APCs, and tanks until you get to the airfield. Now your favorite enemy squadron will appear. (Why you don't want to go with an attacker flat out) There are only 4 of them, so it will be an easy victory. -------------------------- Mission 26: Sea of Chaos -------------------------- Recommended aircraft: anti-ship attacker, no exceptions Objectives: Destroy the enemy aircraft and enemy fleet Naval combat! Whee. There's an enemy flotilla about to take out yours, so LASM those suckers. Remember, attack the physical boats, not the SAMs and stuff (unless you're point hoarding). Hit the ones near the front first. More enemy ships attack from the south, so intercept quick. Watch the SAMs and sink them all. Only after they're down should you worry about the planes. ------------------ Mission 27: Aces ------------------ Recommended aircraft: fighters Objectives: Destroy all enemy positions and protect the allied forces until they capture the control facility entrance. This is it. The moment you've been waiting for. Don't fire at those incoming aircraft! They switch to your cause followed by more aircraft, and more, and more, and a chinook brigade, and an AWACS (catch the AC4 reference?), and the kitchen sink. AB ahead and get ready to shoot down an entire city! Fighters and gun towers are going to lock on you like you like you're the only blonde female at a frat party. Find Hamilton in the sky and try to shoot him down. You'll just wind up disabling him, but he'll make your life miserable if you don't. Hit all the targets and your ground guys will open up the tunnel entrance. You have to fly down it and blow up the nuclear mi... I mean the control system (cough* cough* Ace Combat 4 copy cough*). Hope you're good at flying straight! I'd love to tell you to keep it slow, but Hamilton is going to fly in right behind your squadron. So you need to be booking it unless you want to be missilebait. Use only yaw unless you ABSOLUTELY have to. Otherwise you'll be slamming up and down until you eventually lose control, and that's just aggrivating. If you get a missile on you, just keep flying fast. Hit the core (2 missiles) and AB straight. Break right when you see your old friend ahead. Now all the doors are going to start closing so you'll have a time limit. Watch out for the Su-47 ahead. Take him with missiles and FLY THROUGH HIS EXPLOSION! He's sitting right in the middle of a crane, so if you deviate up, down, or left you'll be smashing right into it. 2 (+1 named) planes come at you, so SAAM or XMAA or whatever you want to them. Keep way low and fly through the arches (or go any way around them, just know there are two of them that you don't want to hit). Those doors get real close, so slam on the AB and rocket out the end! Congratulations, you've won the war and saved the day! . . Psyche! ----------------------------- Mission 27+: The Unsung War ----------------------------- Recommended aircraft: Objectives: * Chicken Little eat your heart out. So there's a satellite. And it's falling... onto a city. So you have to blow it up. Cool. AB to the farrrrr corner of the map. Now you can finally see the top speed of your aircraft. Your two favorite enemy fighter squadrons appear. You've 8 planes to engage in some mindnumbing dogfighting. Take them out fast, then get to the descent point. Once you get there, stick around and fly in circles until the time elapses. Once it gets there, you have to shoot this thing down. It's not so bad once you get the timing down. Get behind it at an angle, so you're in either the top left, top right, bottom left, or bottom right quadrant. The panels near the middle will shoot off and slam into your jet, so be careful! Wait until you can get a clear shot on the target when those long rotating propellor blade things aren't in the way. Keep way back so those solar panels won't smash you when they break off. It takes a lot of missiles, but you should have a lot of missiles. Take out all four points, and you've won the game. Congratulations! ============================================================================= 4. -= Secondary Weapons =- ============================================================================= SAAM: (Semi-Active Air-to-Air Missile) Air-to-air missile with high accuracy and long range.
