History of Yuan Shao ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks to www.kongming.net for this biography on Yuan Shao. Yuan Shao’s great ancestor Yuan An held position as Minister over the Masses in the Han Court. All of Yuan An’s descendants held high positions in the court, and their family was very influential during the Han rule. Yuan Shao's father Yuan Feng held the position of Minister of Interior, and his half-brother Yuan Shu also held high military ranks. Yuan Shao was a handsome man and had many friends among officers. During Emperor Ling’s rule, he held the rank of Commander of the Central Army. After the death of Emperor Ling, Yuan Shao advised He Jin to kill the eunuchs of the palace and call the powerful warlords to the Capital. However, He Jin was deceived by the eunuchs and assassinated by Duan Gui. Yuan Shao retaliated and killed off all the eunuchs in the castle. With all the confusion, Dong Zhuo seized the opportunity to occupy Luo Yang and took custody over the new Emperor Shao and the Prince of Chen Liu, Liu Xie. Dong Zhuo proposed the plan to force Emperor Shao to abdicate in favor of Liu Xie to Yuan Shao. However, Yuan Shao was reluctant and told Dong Zhuo that he would discuss it with his uncle Yuan Wei, who at that time was the Grand Tutor. When Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shao could not come to an agreement Yuan Shao fled the capital and went to Yi Zhou in the north. Dong Zhuo was persuaded by his men, who were actually Yuan sympathizers, to forgive Yuan Shao and conferred him the title of Prefect of Bo Hai. Yuan Shao began training a personal army to free Luo Yang of Dong Zhuo’s tyranny. Together with Lord Cao, Yuan Shao gathered together a coalition to fight against Dong Zhuo and was appointed as Commander-in-Chief. Yuan Shao cleverly used the threat of Gongsun Zan in the north to take Yi Zhou from Han Fu and ordered the Wang Kuang, the Prefect of He Nei, to kill the messengers sent by Dong Zhuo. In response, Dong Zhuo murdered Yuan Wei and his entire household. Though the campaign against Dong Zhuo was a success, Lord Cao was one who gained control of the Emperor Xian and moved him to Xu Chang. Yuan Shao was furious when Lord Cao did not return the Emperor to his custody and prepared for a new war. Yuan Shao defeated Gongsun Zan and added his troops and generals to his own army. With a wide range of territory, tens of thousands of troops and talented men to lead them, Yuan Shao set off to conquer the central plains, with Xu Chang as the main target. While Lord Cao was fighting Liu Bei in Xu Zhou, Tian Feng urged Yuan Shao to attack the rear of his forces and take the capital. However, Yuan Shao was more concerned with his son Shang’s health and did not attack Lord Cao. The opportunity was wasted when Lord Cao defeated Liu Bei and returned his forces to the capital; the desperate Liu Bei fled to Yuan Shao for refugee and was received warmly. Yuan Shao continued the war against Lord Cao but was defeated every time. His commander Wen Chou and Yan Liang were killed, and his strategies were all countered by Lord Cao’s advisors. In the fifth year of Rebuilt Tranquility (AD 200), Yuan Shao suffered a crushing defeat at Guan Du and was forced to retreat back to Yi Zhou. Liu Bei left Yuan Shao’s service, and the advisor Tian Feng was executed in prison in the year AD 201 Yuan Shao had literally no capable officers, but managed to put down a few small rebellions in Yi Zhou after his death. With the defeat at Guan Du however, Yuan Shao realized that he would never stand a chance against Lord Cao again, and he died of an illness in the seventh year of Rebuilt Tranquility. Yuan Shang succeeded his father and together with his brothers he tried to repel Lord Cao’s invasion of the Northern Provinces. However the disunity of their family proved to be their downfall and by the ninth year of Rebuilt Tranquility (204 A.D.), Lord Cao had taken all their land and ended the war in Northern China. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3). Yuan Shao in Dynasty Warriors 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pretty much like any sword wielder Yuan Shao is advanced in all aspects of the game. He plays well mounted on a horse as well. He has been improved by KOEI since Dynasty Warriors 3, after adding his new SSSSST, so this is definitely the best Yuan Shao we've seen yet. Below is a link to the character model of Yuan Shao in Dw4. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/TogeraTwo/Other/YuanShao.jpg ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4). Unlocking Yuan Shao ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unlock Yuan Shao all you have to do is to clear Wei's Musou Mode once. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5). Yuan Shao's moves ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Keys: S = Square Button, T = Triangle Button, C = Circle Button Basic S moves: S - A left to right slash SS - A right the left slash SSS - A left to right slash SSSS - A diagonal right to left slash SSSSS - A powerful left to right slash SSSSSS - A powerful 180 degree right to left slash Running S move: S while running - A powerful right to left slash while sliding. Charged moves (with T): T - Yuan Shao gets on his knees and powerfully dives forward. ST - A powerful jumping uppercut. SST (TTT) - Yuan Shao wildly slashes left to right and then spins around swinging his sword. SSST - A vertical top to bottom slash, very powerful. SSSST (T) - A diagonal right to left uppercut and if T is pushed again Yuan Shao jumps up and slashes the enemy down to the ground. SSSSST - A 360 slash all around with very good range, Yuan Shao's best move and my favorite to use with him. Normal moves and charged moves summary: Yuan Shao's attacks are fast and effective aswell as farely long range. Musou moves: C - Repeated right to left slashes and a final diagonal right to left slash. A great musou for clearing out enemies if used correctly and a great musou for one-on-one combat(duels). C (True Musou) - It begins the same with the regular musou exept the enemies that are hit catches on fire. Near the end Yuan Shao get's in a few more sword slashes and then finishes again with one last diagonal right to left slash with more range. Jump moves: S - A diagonal right to left slash downwards that is useful for knocking enemies off their horses and elephants. T - A good crowd-clearing move that knocks down the enemies around Yuan Shao. A good move if it connects. On horses moves: S attacks - Normal right/left slashes T attacks - A charged up left/right slash that does a little more damage than the regular S attacks. C attack - The musou attack on horse is nothing more than the S attacks except that it does a lot more damage and faster slashes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6). Unlocking Yuan Shao's level 10 weapon (Sword of Kings) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ First you must have Yuan Shao's level 9 weapon before getting this level 10. Name: Sword of Kings Attack: +53 Level: Guan Du Side: Yuan Shao's(obviously) Requirements: Go to the Guan Du Castle(bottom castle where Cao Cao is) and ther'll be a ramming vehicle scene, protect the ram until it crashes the walls down. Comments: I recommend that you help your allies until they come with you aswell, don't rush out and try and protect it bt yourself, it is even hard when maxed, the ram may get destroyed, so get your allies there with you too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7). Yuan Shao's models ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Model 1 (get this initially): Covered in a whole suit of yellow armor, looks sweet. Has a regular gladiator-like helmet with feathers out of the top. Model 2 (get rank 12): Same as model 1 exept with white and redish-pinkish armor. Model 3 (get rank 7): Same body armor as model 1, but has a round, tall, black and yellow helmet on. Model 4 (get rank 7): Same body armor as model 2, but has a round, tall, white and redish-pinkish helmet on. Model 5 (get MAX rank): Yuan Shao's costume from the original Dynasty Warriors 3. Yellow Armored suit with a taller helmet. Model 6 (get MAX rank): Same as Yuan Shao's costume 5, but white armor, very bright and cool. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8). My strategies using Yuan Shao ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Against normal crowds of soldiers: I usually us Yuan Shao's SSSSST, SST(TTT), and SSSSSS. Good crowd clearing moves especially SSSSST. When in a tough level that provides lots and lots of soldiers, this move can be very, very helpful. SST(TTT) is good to use when facing regular troops(not too many) a quick and effective move aswell as stunning the surviving enemies after the last slash. SSSSSS is pretty much a good move to use for any body when in trouble or just clearing out some "commoners". Against officer(s) along with soldiers: I usually go straight after an officer even if there are soldiers around. An always helpful move against an officer(s) and troops is his SST(TTT) and again his SSSSST. SST(TTT) will clear out some soldiers aswell as very effectivly killing your enemy officer and the SSSSST will deal out a lot of damage to both the enemy officer(s) and troops all around you. When dueling: When the duel starts immediatley block and wait for your enemy to attack first, then when he's done attacking quickly run behind him and do your SSSSTT and when he pops back up don't let him get a chance to regroup quickly attack him by doing your SSST and then even if you don't hit your enemy start doing SSSSST and by the time he pops back up you'll have hit your enemy with your most effective attack this may or may not finish off your enemy, in most cases it will. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9). Suggested items for Yuan Shao ------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are many items to choose from and they all go well with Yuan Shao, but here is what I recommend. Yuan Shao starts off with 2 items slots and has a maximum of 5 item slots. Harness: Shadow Runner - Good to use if you're going to use the Horned Helm which I will be recommending for Yuan Shao. Hex Mark - If you're not going to use a Horned Helm, Yuan Shao fits Hex Mark perfectly, and you can never have enough luck. Orbs: Fire Orb - Yuan Shao has some great attacks that go well with the Fire Orb and when at a higher level he can be very effective with his SSSSST. Vorpal Orb - Works well with Yuan Shao's T attack, can hit multiple enemies and mostly causing death to some of them, and his SSSSST attack is very good because it covers a lot of the area around him causing death to at least a couple of enemies. Items: - Peacock Urn (Yuan Shao is a commander and deserves to have high life) - Dragon Amulet (very useful when attacking enemy officers) - Tiger Amulet (Can never have enough attack power and his level 10 weapon doesn't provide the "best" attack in the game) - Tortoise Amulet (good to have secure defense power) - Horned Helm (Yuan Shao can be very effective on a horse if a higher level Horned Helm is provided) - Wind Scroll (More range for sword-users is always a good thing) - Speed Scroll (Yuan Shao is typically slow, so more speed couldn't hurt) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10). Yuan Shao's battle cries ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Basically this means what Yuan Shao says during battle. Defeating an officer: "Enemy officer defeated" Accepting a duel: "I will show you your place!" Taunt: "You commoner" Musou: "Insolence" True Musou: "Bow your head!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11).
