Introduction ================================================ Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires is a game that involves strategy and button-mashing. This guide is based mostly off the diffuctly setting of normal. This guide is my first and is based purely on my experience and any help is appreciated. So now, let’s move on to the next section. =============================================== 3. Controls =============================================== Well, the controls are very tedious, and it takes a very long to to remember. No, I'm just joking, this game's control is very simple and easy. During the part where you are choosing the strategy and all, the X button will be the button that makes all the choices, and the triangle button allows you to go back to a previous step if you think you did something wrong. But be careful, some steps cannot be changed and so always be carful. Now, when you are in battle, all you got to do is mash the buttons X and triangle, string them together to create a sort of combo. That's all for this section, on to the next one. =============================================== 4. History of Zhao Yun =============================================== Information from kongming.net with some changes: Zhao Yun (AD 168–229) hailed from Zhending of Changshan (present day Hebei Zhending). Zhao Yun was originally under Gongsun Zan and when Gongsun Zan ordered Liu Bei to assist Tian Kai to fend off Yuan Shao, Zhao Yun followed along as Liu Bei’s main cavalry forces. During the time when Liu Bei was pursued by Cao Cao’s forces at Dangyang Changban, Liu Bei abandoned his wife and child to flee south. Zhao Yun carried the young child, who was Liu Shan and also protected Lady Gan, the mother of Liu Shan, hence all of them were able to escape the dangers. Zhao Yun was later appointed as General of the Standard. While Liu Bei entered the Shu region, Zhao Yun remained in Jingzhou. In the thirteenth year of JianAn (AD 208), Liu Bei was defeated in Changban of Dangyang and was forced to flee south with only tens of cavalry and also had to abandon his family in the process. Upon seeing that, Zhao Yun turned back and headed north into the enemies midst to locate Liu Bei’s family. At that time, someone told Liu Bei that Zhao Yun was heading north to surrender to Cao Cao. Liu Bei reacted by hitting the person with a halberd in his hand and said that Zhao Yun would never abandon him. Not long after, Zhao Yun, despite the dangers, came back carrying the Future Lord (Liu Shan) and also protected the Future Lord’s mother Lady Gan from the dangers. Before the battle of Chibi, Liu Bei gave Zhao Yun the rank of General of the Standard. After the battle of Chibi, Zhao Yun joined Liu Bei in pacifying the various states and provinces in Jingzhou. Liu Bei gave Zhao Yun the rank of Lieutenant-General and ordered him to replace Zhao Fan as the governor of Guiyang Commandery (present day Hunan Chen Province). Zhao Fan had a widowed sister-in-law that was very beautiful, and he had desired to marry her to Zhao Yun in order to pull ties. Zhao Yun strongly rejected the proposal and someone tried to persuade him. In reply, Zhao Yun explained that Zhao Fan was forced to surrender and thus his motives were not known. Besides that, he argued that there are many women around, thus why risk with taking this woman. Not long after, Zhao Fan indeed escaped. In the seventeenth year of JianAn (AD 212), Liu Bei began to attack Liu Zhang and ordered Zhuge Liang, Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun to assist him in Shu. Zhao Yun led his troops from Jiangzhou (present day Chong Qing) to Jiangyang (present day Sichuan Luzhou) and prepared to attack Chengdu. When Liu Bei conquered Chengdu, he appointed Zhao Yun as General of the Flying Army. In the twenty-fourth year of JianAn (AD 219), Zhao Yun went with Liu Bei to attack Hanzhong. After the Shu army had killed Xiahou Yuan, Cao Cao gathered a large army to Hanzhong in response. There was an incident whereby the Cao army was transporting a large supply of grain to the bottom of the Northern Mountain. Huang Zhong saw that as an opportunity to intercept the food supply and he led his followers as well as Zhao Yun’s to attack the food supply chain. When Huang Zhong failed to return by the scheduled time, Zhao Yun brought along some light cavalry to assist Huang Zhong. After a short period of journeying, they met up with Cao Cao’s main force. Zhao Yun fought with Cao Cao’s vanguard but the latter’s troops were quickly reinforced in large amounts, forcing Zhao Yun to beat a retreat. The Cao army had Zhao Yun’s troops surrounded and by the time Zhao Yun managed to break out of the enemies’ lines, he realized that his subordinate Zhang Zhu was injured. Zhao Yun charged back into the enemies’ midst to rescue Zhang Zhu before they retreated back to their camp. At that time, the governor of Mianyang county Zhang Yi was helping to defend the camp. When he saw the size of the Cao army coming, he shut the gates and refused to defend. Zhao Yun realized of the immensity of the enemy’s troops and found it impossible to defend the camp. Thus he ordered for the gates to be opened, the flags taken down and the beating of drums ceased. When the Cao army arrived at the camp, they suspected of a possible ambush and retreated hastily. Zhao Yun then ordered for the drums to be beaten and also arrows be shot. The Cao army was taken by surprise by the sudden noise and was put to disarray and stampeding and many were drowned in the River Han nearby. The next day, Liu Bei came to Zhao Yun’s camp to inspect the outcome of the battle and could not help but praise Zhao Yun for his bravery. From then on, Zhao Yun was nicknamed among the Shu army as General of Tiger Valor. In the first year of ZhangWu (AD 221), Liu Bei commanded his troops to attack Wu. Zhao Yun petitioned that, “The traitor of the country was Cao Cao and not Sun Quan, thus Wei should be annexed first and following that, Wu would surrender willingly. Although Cao Cao had passed away, his son Cao Pi had ascended the throne amidst the wrath of many. Hence, it is best to annex Guanzhong, conquer the Yellow River, Shangyou of the Wei Waters, followed by an eastern expedition to force the Guangdong troops into action. Thus, it was best not to leave Wei untouched in a bid to fight Wu. Should the war between Wu and us start, it would be difficult to cease.” Liu Bei did not heed his advice and since Zhao Yun had brought up this proposal, Liu Bei did not allow him to take part in the coming battle and left him to be in charge of two provinces in Jiangzhou. After Liu Bei was defeated, Zhao Yun was too late in bringing in the reinforcements whilst the Wu army had retreated. In the first year of JianXing (AD 222), Zhao Yun was appointed as General Who Protects the Center and General Who Conquers the South, given the title of Marquis of Yongchang. In the early days of Liu Shan’s ascent to the throne, the diplomatic relations between Shu and Wu was very unstable and so subsequently Zhao Yun was appointed as the General Who Guards the East to be in charge of the army stationed at Ba. In the fifth year of JianXing (AD 227), he was stationed in Hanzhong with Zhuge Liang. In the next year, when Zhuge Liang went on a northern campaign, Zhao Yun and Deng Zhi’s troops went under cover to Jigu. After the retreat, Zhao Yun was demoted to General of the Centre Army. Zhao Yun died of illness during the seventh year of JianXing (AD 229) and he was around the age of sixty-one. During the time when Liu Bei was on the throne, only Fa Zheng was given an honorable title after his death. During Liu Shan’s reign, due to the immense contributions given by Zhuge Liang, Jiang Wan and Fei Yi, they were also given posthumous temple names to commemorate their efforts. The families of the deceased were also specially rewarded and taken care of by the state; similarly, Xiahou Ba who came from far was also rewarded an honorable title after his death. Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao, Pang Tong, Huang Zhong and Zhao Yun were all subsequently compensated with a title during Liu Shan’s time and this title rewarding was deemed as a great honor. Zhao Yun’s deeds were thus also commemorated and he was given the posthumous temple name of the Marquis of Shunping in the fourth year of Jingyao (AD 261) =============================================== 5. Why Should I use Zhao Yun? =============================================== Now you might ask why should you use Zhao Yun. Well, the reason is simple. Zhao Yun's S-String has an extraodinary reach and is very good on crowds. His C4 works well on crowds as well. His musou and true musou works well tapped or untapped. Zhao Yun is a well-rounded character and most of his moves are above average. But one bad thing is that he has a bad C3 compared to the other characters. So, remember, never use a C3 in the middle of a crowd. =============================================== 6. Move Set =============================================== Key: S = Square button, T = Triangle button, O = Circle button, X = X button S- A slash to the right covering 250+ degree SS- A straight stab SSS- A 360 degree swipe with his spear. SSSS- A downward slash SSSSS- Another 360 degree hit that hits any enemies near him. SSSSSS- A final slash to the left, covering about 180 degree. T- Zhao Yun charges forward using his spear. Has invincibility on this attack and is a good attack against archers. ST- Zhao Yun uses the butt of his spear to launch his enemies into the air. SST- Zhao Yun does two continuous straight hits from up to down and ends with a quick 180 degree slash to the left. Can press T more times to do more straight hits. SSST- Zhao Yun does a spin and then a 180 degree slash to the right. SSSST- Zhao Yun smashes his spear onto the ground causing a “shockwave” that launches his enemies into the air. SSSSST- Zhao Yun pierces his enemies with his spear multiple times. XS- A downward slash covering about 180 degrees XT- Zhao Yun does a stomp that has a 360 degree area of effect. Mounted S- Zhao Yun does a series of 6 slashes starting from the right and then to the left. Mounted T- Zhao Yun does a series of 2 stronger slashes going from either right to left or left to right. Mounted O- Zhao Yun does a series of strong and fast slashes going from right to left. The longer you hold O, the more slashes he does. Musou- Zhao Yun starts spinning around with his spear. Launches up enemies. The longer you hold O, the longer Zhao Yun spins. Ends with a 180 degree slash. True Musou- Nearly the same, just with the fire orb effect on it. =============================================== 7. Strategies =============================================== In this chapter, we will be dealing with how to use Zhao Yun to his maximum potential. Okay, let us begin. Against Peons/Archers Now, the most common enemies you will meet and fight are peons, followed by archers. Zhao Yun has a very good S-String, and using that alone, he can take out a large portion of the peons. Of course, there are times you want to try something different. His SSST is just the move for you. It is a 180 degree clear out move and can work well in crowds. There is also his SSSSST, which is also a good move. With this move, he does a great job of clearing the crowds. These would be his best moves. His other moves are above average, but one move I would not recommend using in the crowd is his SST and continue pressing T. You may want to do it untapped, which would be a better choice. His musou or true musou can be saved for officers, or if you really are in a bad situation, just tap O to give yourself some breathing room, remember not to hold. And against archers, you might want to use his T to get close to them. Then, just unleash your S-String or do another T and there you go. Officers/Sub-officers Well, this people are not your normal peons whom you can kill in one to two hits. They are powered up, know how to block and also will take chances, if you give them any. Well, Zhao Yun has a few options. If he is alone with that officer, he can choose to pull off his SST, continuing to press T is up to you, and try to dizzy him at the end. After that just try and juggle him with a SSSST and follow up with a full musou. This should take a chunk of the officer’s life away, and maybe even kill him. If however, you are in a crowd, try to pull of his S-String. It should take out the crowd and do some damage to the officer as well. Then you can damage the officer with the above combo. But what if, there is a never-ending crowd? Well, use his SSST as many times to damage the officer and at the same time clear the crowd. You could also use a full musou. Remember to block as well and slowly, but surely, the officer will get defeated. =============================================== 9. Equipping Zhao Yun =============================================== Zhao Yun works well with nearly anything, after all, he is a well rounded character. It's up to you on how you equip him, but below are some of the item set-ups I use on my Zhao Yun. ========================= Zhao Yun, All Rounder ========================= Saddle: Red Hare Harness Orb: Fire/Vorpal Item: Dragon Amulet Item: Peacock Amulet Item: Tiger Amulet Item: Tortise Amulet Item: Way Of The Musou This set-up will make Zhao Yun, as the name suggests, an great all rounder. His stats will be near maxed. The Red Hare is for quick transportation, but you can choose other saddles. Zhao Yun works well both with the fire or vorpal orb, so choose between them. The Way Of The Musou allows him to use his True Musou at all times which has a great 360 degree ender. This is a good set-up for any type of stage. ========================= Zhao Yun, Tiger General ========================= Saddle: Red Hare Harness Orb: Blast Item: Tiger Amulet Item: Tortise Amulet Item: Herbal Remedy Item: Power Rune Item: Way Of The Musou/Dragon Amulet This second set-up, will give Zhao Yun insanely high attack, especially on charge moves. In this, Zhao Yun sort of exchanges his life and musou stats, and a bit of his defence to gain an even higher attack. The last item is for you to choose between having a higher life or a chance to use his true musou anytime. The blast orb is there so as to ensure that his now deadly charge moves will always connect, due to the orb's ability to do damage even when the enemy is blocking. This is a great set-up if you want to kill enemies especially quick. ========================== Zhao Yun, Noob Period ========================== Saddle: Storm Harness Orb: Fire (if you have it) Item: Tiger Amulet Item: Tortise Amulet This set-up is for gamers out there who have not used Zhao Yun at all. Use the Storm Harness and fire orb if you have them. The two most basic items you should equip on any character are the tiger and tortise amulets, so always equip that on any fresh character, this includes Zhao Yun. This is a great set-up for a fresh Zhao Yun, maybe level one and two. Once you advance to level three or higher, use one of the above two setups. =============================================== 10. Zhao Yun's models =============================================== Zhao Yun’s model is very cool looking. The colours are mostly white with a bit of blue or gold detail here and there. He wears a white wrap with gold details around his chest. He wears white pants black shoes. He wears a green headband. His hair is let down. ================================================ 11.Copyright ================================================ You may not reproduce this FAQ under any circumstances except for personal, private use.
