A lot of times, drifting allows entry and exit speeds faster than any grip driving will ever give. In grip racing you are going for slow to fast through the corner, while executing a drift, you will keep a constant speed all through the corner and come out of it much faster. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Different kinds of drifts In Gran Turismo 3 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Power Over - This performed when entering a corner and using full throttle to produce heavy oversteer through the turn. Braking drift - This is performed by trail braking into a corner, then loss of traction is obtained and then balance through steering and gas motions. Faint Drift - This is done by rocking the car towards the outside of a turn and then using the regain of traction to throw the car into the normal cornering side. (Like in Initial D when Truneo first race against FD). Dirt Drop Drift- This is done by dropping the rear tires off the road into the dirt to maintain or gain drift angle without losing power or speed and to set up for the next turn. FF Drift - Front wheel drive drift. The E-brake as well as steering and braking techniques must be used to balance the car through a corner. E-Brake Drift - This technique is pretty straight forward, pull the E-Brake to induce rear traction loss and balance drift through steering and throttle play. Swaying Drift - This is a slow side-to-side faint like drift where the rear end sways back and forth down a strait. Kansei Drift - This is done at race speeds, when entering a high speed corner a driver lifts his foot off the gas to initiate a mild oversteer and then balances the drift through steering and gas motions. Jump Drift - In this technique the rear tire on the inside of a turn or apex is bounced over a curb to lose traction resulting in oversteer. Long Slide Drift - This is done by pulling the E-brake through a strait to start a high angel drift and to hold this to set up for the turn ahead. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Drift Settings * = Great for LONG showy drifts ----------------------------------------------------------------------- For (In Order Of list): |Car Name| |Tuner| Nissan Skyline R32 GTS-T Type-M (by: master's drift) Nismo Skyline GT-R S-Tune (by: Eclipseboy) Mazda RX-7 RZ (New version) (by: master's drift) Mazda RX-7 RZ (New version) (by: InSaNe RaCeR) Mazda RX-7 RZ (New version) (by: Eclipseboy) Mazda RX-7 RS (New version) (by: InSaNe RaCeR) Mazda RX-7 FC (Old Version) (by: kebl0632) Mazda RX-7 FC (Old Version) * (by: BryanH) Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex (by: thirteen20) Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex (by: master's drift) Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex S.S. version (by: Eclipseboy) Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex S.S. version (by: kebl0632) Toyota Supra RZ (by: Eclipseboy) Toyota Supra SZ-R (by: VoodooPriest) Subaru Impreza STi (by: Eclipseboy) Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 7 (by: Char) BMW 328ci (by: ChaoticF8) Toyota MR2 G-Limited (by: InSaNe RaCeR) Toyota MR2 G-Limited (by: VoodooPriest) Nissan Silvia K's 1800cc (by: InSaNe RaCeR) Nissan Silvia K's 1800cc * (by: BryanH) Shelby Cobra (by: Mr Badwrench) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Nissan Skyline R32 GTS-T Type-M ------------- Parts to Buy: ------------- 430 horsepower front and back normal tire Stage 2 Weight Reduction ------------- Settings: ------------- Spring 9.6kgf/mm 8.0kgf/mm Height 96mm 96mm Damper (shrinkage) Level 6 Level 7 Damper (extension) Level 8 Level 9 Camber 0.5 0.0 Toe -2.0 2.0 Stabilizer 4 4 Brake balance 24 24 LSD 40/54/40 Gear ratio 1st 2.706 2nd 1.845 3rd 1.357 4th 1.046 5th 0.845 6th 0.715 Final 4.363 Auto 29 ASM Level 0 TCS Level 1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Nismo Skyline GT-R S-Tune ------------- Parts to Buy: ------------- Reduce weight up to stage 2 Racing super soft tires on front and rear Use stage 2 turbo or 1 if 2 is too much power Buy all the top of the line parts. First, brake to slow down if you are going way too fast for the turn, like in the long stretch at trial mountain. Then, turn in and brake at the same time. turn in as hard as you can. then after that, let go of the brake and continue to turn in. when you feel the rear's traction has broken, let go of the wheel, then countersteer a little bit. it takes a bit of control with the dualshock but its easier with the wheel. then if you feel like spinning or straightening, countersteer all the way and tap the gas twice. pulling the e-brake is only for 4wd cars, and i dont recommend it for FR... oh FF uses it alot too but FF is the hardest to drift with. By: RyuknAdeu * High LSD = Easier Control in the drift. Somtimes middle LSD, high LSA and LSI work well for long showy drifts. * Do the 60R Wet track in IB license alot to help practice drifting. It Gives you a feel for tapping the gas instead of just full out pressing it. Also gets you used to your car slipping around while your countersteering. * As for light weight conversion, Stage2 is enough. Stage 3 will be too much. This is because with the GT3 car weight concept has become stricter. When it is upgraded to Stage3, inertia is working too much, then it seems that grip recovers in the drift and your drift goes out the door. * I use the Logitech GT Force wheel in GT3, and I'm happy with it. It's precise, the pedals are great, and it gives me a feel for what the car is up to. Its lock to lock range is only about 180 degrees, but I like it this way. Never have to take my hands off the wheel. By: BryanH * Drifting scrubs off speed, so you want to enter a corner a bit faster than you would when grip racing. I usually try to get sideways before the turn and drift through it, ending up more or less straight when the turn is over with. I wouldn't use the handbrake to start off with either. It's kindof a crutch, I think. It's useful to me for extending a drift before a turn, but not for actually initiating the drift. By: BryanH ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FAQ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Okay, I finished watching Initial D, now how can I learn to drift like those guys? A: Before you even dream of drifting, select a car (FR drivetran cars (ie. Trueno) are the best to drift with in my opinion, while 4WD's (ie. Skyline) are also a great choice). Q: Alright I have the car I want, but I can't get it to turn for the life of me, How can I get my car to turn? A: You need to tune your car to drift. I have many settings on this FAQ that you could use, but the best way is to try different settings and see what you like. Having a high LSD will do great, or you can go for long showy drift by having a middle LSD, High LSI and LSA. Oh and make sure to turn ASM and TRC to 0. Q: LSD? What's that do? A: LSD is limited slip deceleration. If you have these all the way up, your rear wheels lock up during a turn cauing your butt to slide our while your front wheels are working together to get your car in motion. This will help you control a drift when you first start. Q: How do I get the car to Initiate a drift? A: First, brake to slow down if you are going way too fast for the turn, like in the long stretch at trial mountain. Then, turn in and brake at the same time. turn in as hard as you can. then after that, let go of the brake and continue to turn in. when you feel the rear's traction has broken, let go of the wheel, then countersteer a little bit. Q: When I try to initiate a drift, my car burns out up the ying yang. How can I prevent this? A: To prevent burn outs, make sure you counter streer pretty earlier and don't push your gas button all the way down, tap on it all through the drift. Try doing the 60R Wet track in IB license, it help you learn to tap the gas instead of full out pressing it. Q: Everytime I turn in the corner and try to drift with the pedal brake my car just slow down but doesnt slide at all. When I use the e-brake I slide alot, I think this is drifting because I can slide through that corner (after the long straight way in Trial Mountain) with my car facing the left side then I countersteer to get it straight again. My speed after the slide is about 50mph. Am I drifting? A: Nope, just pressing the e-break during a turn is not a drift, it is a powerslide. As mentioned earlier, a drift is a controlled slide through a corner. Use the break only to slow down and make sure your going fast enough to initiate a drift. Your speed after the drift should be as fast if not faster as when you entered the turn. Q: When I drift, my speed drops and I become alot slower. I thought drifting is faster than grip racing? A: Not all corners in the track are made to drift. To become a great racer, you ahve to know when to drift through a corner and when to grip through it. Sometimes a drift can look fant- astic, but it is not the best race line through a track. Overall though, when you learn to handle a drift, you become faster. Q: Which tires do I use? Which are the best? A: It really depends on what your going to use them for. For long showy drifts, simulation tries are a must because they are the only tires that can last the long drifts without gripping back to the track. For racing speed drifts, a high traction tire suits well in front while a lower traction tire in the rear suits well because the rear will lose traction and your butt will fling out. Q: Grip Racing Vs Drift Racing, What's faster? A: I have to say Drift racing, this is because during grip racing your are accelerating through the turn while drifting, you are staying at a constant speed through the turn and accelerating to even higher speeds when you exit the the turn. This is only if your a crazy pro and able to keep your drifting line though, but normally I would say grip driving because you get more control on the turn and it's easier to keep the best line with grip rather than drifting. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Legal Junk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright: © Copyright 2002 Aaron Palacios.
