Sega struggled for a while and after the Dreamcast era the company decided to change its focus from video game hardware to software. Sega, the company that also brought us "Virtua Tennis," released "Sega Superstars Tennis" somewhat as a response to Nintendo's "Super Smash Brothers Brawl" that was released a few weeks earlier. To be quite honest, I had never really heard of this game until I saw its case sitting on my roommate's desk. He told me that I could have it because there was no way that he would ever play it. I took him up on his offer and brought the game into my room. After playing a few rounds by myself and with another roommate, I have come to the conclusion that although "Sega Superstars Tennis" is not Game of the Year material, it's a nice distraction from all of the multiplayer games we have been playing on XBox Live together. From there, I decided that this guide would be a nice distraction from my other projects. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.0.0 - Controls =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The controls to traverse the menus are just what you would expect: use the directional pad or the left analog stick to highlight menu items, the right analog stick to change options, the A button to select/open menus and the B button to cancel/exit menus. In-game controls are listed below: D-Pad / Left Stick - Player movement A Button - Topspin X Button - Slice A, X - Lob X, A - Drop Shot A or X - Smash (Ball is above player) Left / Right Trigger - Superstar State Start Button - Pause Back Button - Change View =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.0.0 - Basic Techniques =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Serve ----- Press the A or X button to throw the ball into the air. While the ball is in the air, use the D-Pad or the Left Analog Stick to aim to the left or the right and press the A or X button again to hit it. To perform a powerful serve, time the hit when the Serve Meter is full. Be careful to not aim too far outside when you are serving because you may fault (the controller vibrating indicates this). Two faults in a row and you will secede a point to the other player. For some characters, like Dr. Eggman, the Serve Meter fills very quickly but for others it fills very slowly. Shot Strength ------------- The power with which you can hit a shot is determined by your position in relation to the ball. If the ball is coming close to you and you press one of the shot buttons soon enough you can really hit a bullet back to the other player. On the other hand, if the ball is not coming anywhere near you and you have to run to hit it, your character will stretch out and hit the ball just hard enough to get it back across the net. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are running back and forth across the court in order to continue hitting the ball back over the net, perform a lob to get the ball to fly high into the hair. This will give the other player a chance to smash the ball back over, but you will also have more time to return to the center line and to reestablish your balance and momentum. Ball Direction -------------- When striking a ball, you can control the direction of the shot using the Left Analog Stick. You want to keep your opponent running back and forth across the court so try to alternate your shots to the left and right sides. Smash ----- When a high ball is delivered, the "Smash Chance" marker will appear. Move quickly to it and press the A or X button. This is pretty self-explanatory, however, do not assume that smashes are instant points. A skilled opponent will be able to return them. Drop Shot --------- When you hit a drop shot, the ball falls gently just over the net. This makes it a handy option for times when the opponent is at the back of the court. To perform a Drop Shot tap the X button then A button quickly. Superstar State --------------- Every character has a Superstar meter in the form of a star beneath their feet, which is slowly filled whenever you perform well. When the star is filled, your character will transform into Superstar State! The Superstar State is triggered by pressing Left or Right trigger. While the character is in their own unique Superstar State, they run faster, hit the ball harder, or even call down the power of the skies. Some characters have better special hits than others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instructing Your COM Partner ---------------------------- In Doubles matches with a COM partner, press the button to switch your partner's play style as detailed below. The COM partner's position is displayed at the top of the screen. Baseline - Back of the court (defensive). Normal - Regular position. Net Play - Front of the court (offensive). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4.0.0 - Characters =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Sonic (Speed) AiAi (Spin) NiGHTS (All Around) Ulala (Control) Beat (Speed) Amigo (Power) Tails (Spin) Dr. Eggman (Power) Shadow (Speed) MeeMee (Spin) Reala (All Around) Pudding (Control) Gum Alex Kidd Gilius (Power) Amy (All Around) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 5.0.0 - Planet Superstars =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Play matches, tournaments and ball games to unlock a huge number of prizes! Throughout this part of the guide, some characters will have words like (Power) and (Speed) next to their names. These labels indicate the specialties of the aforementioned characters as you would see them from the character select screen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - After Burner ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - Singles Tournament ------------------------------- A singles tournament against Beat (Speed), Alex Kidd (Control), and then Sonic (Speed). There is not much advice that I can give you here that I have not given you before. Pick the player with which you play your best for this mission. There are two minor annoyances to point out as far as the court is concerned: there is a shady area at one end of the court where you may have trouble seeing the ball and occasionally a helicopter will fly over the court, momentarily impairing your view. Unlocks: ------- New Court - After Burner New Music Track - Vertical Hot Air New Music Track - After Burner Climax New Music Track - After Burner -Climax Remix- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - Alex Kidd ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - Singles Tournament ------------------------------- A singles tournament against Sonic (Speed), Reala (All Around), and then Alex Kidd (Control). You should be experienced enough by now that Sonic and Reala do not pose a real challenge for you. Alex Kidd, on the other hand, is a completely different story. He is hands down the single most difficult opponent to defeat in Planet Superstars. His specialty is control but whenever you face him on the court it will seem as if everything is his specialty. He hits very powerful shots to the left and to the right and he has no problem attacking the net. He can run quickly from the left to the right to catch your long shots. Finally, his special shot in Superstar State is nearly unstoppable. Just play him calmly and watch for any openings that you may see. If Alex ever gives you an inch then take it a mile. Do not be afraid to attack the net against him, either. Unlocks: ------- New Character - Alex Kidd ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - ChuChu Rocket! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - ChuChu Rescue -------------------------- Goal - 20 ChuChu Time Limit - 60 seconds This is a very simple mission to start off this new level. Watch the path of the ChuChu as they make their way around the other half of the court. Hit the balls that are given to you onto the arrows on the four sides of the other half of the court to turn the arrows towards the rocket ship in the middle. The ChuChu will walk in the direction that the arrow is facing, so direct them into the rocket to complete this mission. The quickest way to complete this mission is to hit the arrow on the left side to make it face towards the rocket ship. As a further note, you may want to use the X button to softly hit the balls in this mission and in all of the following missions. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #2 - Mouse Mania Mission #2 - Mouse Mania ------------------------ Goal - 50 ChuChu Time Limit - 60 seconds This mission has the same concept as the previous one. In order to complete it, hit the two arrows until they are both facing to the right. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #3 - Cat Mania New Music Track - ChuChu Rocket Normal Mode Mission #3 - Cat Mania ---------------------- Goal - 10 KapuKapu Time Limit - 45 seconds In this mission, the cats come out of the orange circles and run to the black holes. Your goal is to hit them with the balls that are given to you before they can fall into the holes. If you are having trouble with this mission, try getting as close as you can to the cats to shorten the distance that you have to hit the balls. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #4 - Cat Attack Mission #4 - Cat Attack ----------------------- Goal - 30 ChuChu Time Limit - 90 seconds This mission is a combination of the previous missions. In order for the ChuChu to make it to the rocket ship, you want the arrow on the right side to face up and you want the arrow at the top to face to the right. This will give the ChuChu the direction that they need. Get close to the other half of the court and try to shoot the KapuKapu without changing the direction of the arrows. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #5 - ChuChu Panic Mission #5 - ChuChu Panic ------------------------- Goal - 100 ChuChu Time Limit - 90 seconds This mission is similar to the previous ones except that now you have to go through multiple stages. For the first stage, you want the arrow on the right to face to the left and you want the arrow in the middle to face upwards. For the second stage, you want the arrow at the bottom-left to face down and you want the other to the right of the ship to face to the left. Now, the third and final stage can be somewhat difficult. Notice that during their original path, there are two arrows that the ChuChu do not even step on. As soon as the mission begins, aim your balls at the arrow immediately above the rocket ship until it is facing down and make the arrow in the upper-left corner face to the right (towards the first arrow that you moved). Now take a look at the very first arrow that the ChuChu run across. As soon as the last ChuChu has stepped on this arrow and gone to the right, hit the arrow until it faces upwards towards the second arrow that you moved. The ChuChu will take a full lap around their half of the court and when they come back around they will follow the arrows into the rocket ship. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #6 - More Cat Mania Mission #6 - More Cat Mania --------------------------- Goal - 30 KapuKapu Time Limit - 90 seconds This is actually a very simple mission. Run straight foward and stay on the center line and get as close as you can to the other half of the court. Constantly press the X button to hit balls in a straight line towards the other side. You will hit more than enough cats before time expires. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #7 - Feed KapuKapu New Music Track - ChuChu Rocket Puzzle Mode Mission #7 - Feed KapuKapu -------------------------- Goal - 30 ChuChu Time Limit - 90 seconds Here, the objective is to direct the cats towards the ChuChu. You want the arrow in the upper-right corner to face down, the arrow in the bottom-right corner to face to the left, the arrow in the bottom-left corner to face up, and the arrow above that one to face to the right. You must turn the arrows without hitting the KapuKapu or they will die. Turning the arrows like this will direct the cats into the ChuChu that are running in a circle in the middle of the court. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #8 - Launch 2 Rockets Mission #8 - Launch 2 Rockets ----------------------------- Goal - 40 ChuChu Time Limit - 90 seconds In this mission there is a rocket in the upper-left corner and a second one in the bottom right corner. Your goal is to direct 20 of the ChuChu to one of the rockets then redirect the other 20 ChuChu to the rocket at the opposite corner of the court. You know how to move the arrows so do what you have been doing for the other missions and this should not be difficult. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #9 - Everybody Moves Mission #9 - Everybody Moves ---------------------------- Goal - 100 ChuChu Time Limit - 90 seconds There is no set strategy for this mission. Direct the ChuChu into the first rocket as soon as the mission begins. Soon, you will get a message saying "Everybody Move!" This message moves the location of the rocket ship. As soon as the rocket moves, you want to again redirect the ChuChu to the new destination. Keep this up and you should not have any problem getting 100 ChuChu before the time limit. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #10 - Score With ChuChus Mission #10 - Score With ChuChus -------------------------------- Goal - 3600 points Time Limit - 60 seconds This is the ultimate combination of the previous missions. You go through multiple stages, each one progressing with difficulty, and your job is to get all of the ChuChus into the rockets on each stage. Once you've cleared a stage, you get a "Time Bonus," which is nothing but your time getting reset back to one minute. The stages are too complicated to explain in detail here. This is obviously the most difficult of all of the missions in this level, but if you do what you have been doing so far and you will eventually complete it. Unlocks: ------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - Curien Mansion ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - Hit The Zombies! ----------------------------- Goal - 15 zombies Time Limit - 45 seconds Your goal is to hit the balls in order to defeat the zombies. When you are on the right half of the court, the machine on the right serves balls to you and when you are on the left half of the court, the machine on the left serves balls to you. It takes a fairly strong shot to knock one of the zombies down, so you may want to use a character whose specialty is power. If you hit a string of zombies in a row you can score a combo, however, that does nothing special for you in this mission. Do not let the zombies touch you, be sure to keep your distance from them if you can. If they touch you the mission is over. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #2 - Hit Zombie Combos! Mission #2 - Hit Zombie Combos! ------------------------------- Goal - 5 combos Time Limit - 45 This is where scoring combos actually does something for you. Again, you will want to select a powerful character like Dr. Eggman for this mission so that you will have enough strength to take the zombies down. This mission begins with far more zombies than the previous mission did, so take the balls that are served to you and blast them into the clusters of zombies. If you are having trouble, realize that towards the end of the mission if you have not dropped many of the zombies they will all be piled together so you can just blast shots into the group and get combos. Again, for future reference for any zombie mission, keep your distance from the zombies if you can and do not let them touch you. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #3 - Hit The Big Zombies! Mission #3 - Hit The Big Zombies! --------------------------------- Goal - 8 big zombies Time Limit - 45 seconds In this mission you have to use powerful shots to take down the big zombies. For some reason, I would assume that a "powerful shot" constitutes holding down one of the shot buttons for a decent amount of time. However, for some reason that is not the case during this mission. A strategy I found that works for me is to get right beside one of the machines that serves balls and to quickly tap the A button to get quick shots at the big zombies instead of holding down the shot button. As in the previous zombie missions, if you can get a string of big zombies then you can score a combo by taking all of them down at once. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #4 - Use The Power-Ups! Mission #4 - Use The Power-Ups! ------------------------------- Goal - 35 zombies Time Limit - 60 seconds This is a fairly simple mission. Only power-ups will defeat these zombies - you have your choice of Big Shot, Triple Shot and Rapid Shot from left to right on your half of the court. I recommend Rapid Shot because it seems to work the best for me. After three shots the power-ups will reappear and you will have to get another one. This is the mission in which you are most likely to unlock the achievement "Zombie Hunter! (20)" by getting an 8 zombie combo. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #5 - Hit Zombie-Throwers! New Music Track - Curien Mansion "Revenge" Mission #5 - Hit Zombie-Throwers! --------------------------------- Goal - 8 zombie throwers Time Limit - 45 seconds This is an interesting twist on previous missions. The premise is the same - to take down zombies - but now the enemy zombies on the other half of the court have racquets that they will periodically throw at you. Avoid them, because being hit by a racquet will end your mission. It seems as if your shots do not have to be as powerful to take down these zombies as in earlier missions so perhaps you can use a character whose specialty is not power, however, I use Dr. Eggman in all of these missions. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #6 - Hit Lots Of Zombies! Mission #6 - Hit Lots Of Zombies! --------------------------------- Goal - 50 zombies Time Limit - 90 seconds This mission is a combination of all of the previous zombie missions and it is also the most fun. The zombies coming at you from the other half of the court include regular zombies, big zombies and racquet throwers. Power-ups will periodically appear on your half of the court so make sure that you use them to your advantage. There is not much more that I can tell you, so use the same strategies that you have used in previous missions in order to complete this one. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #7 - Rescue Civilians! Mission #7 - Rescue Civilians! ------------------------------ Goal - 5 civilians Time Limit - 75 seconds This can be a rather difficult mission and it may take several tries in order for you to complete it. As the zombies begin to make their way down towards you, a group of civilians will line up beside the ball machine on the right. Your goal is to clear a line between the zombies so that the civilians can safely make it across the tennis court to the other side. Again, you have a combination of all of the different types of zombies that you have faced before. From time to time a little white box with a heart on it will appear on your half of the court. These are unbelievably helpful and if you see one randomly appear on the court it is imperative that you grab it. Other than that, just make sure that you constantly keep a barrage of tennis balls flying towards the zombies so that they do not group up so tightly that a path through them cannot be made. Unlocks: ------- New Stage - Virtua Squad New Mission - Mission #8 - Singles Tournament Mission #8 - Singles Tournament ------------------------------- A singles tournament against NiGHTS (All Around), Shadow (Speed), and then Dr. Eggman (Power). The only important thing to note about this mission is that these three opponents all have good special shots while they are in Superstar State, so be careful of that. Otherwise, use the same basic strategies you've used in previous matches and you will be fine. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #9 - Zombie Clean-Up! New Music Track - Curien Mansion "Final Stage" Mission #9 - Zombie Clean-Up! ----------------------------- Goal - 40 zombies Time Limit - 60 seconds This mission is very similar to Mission #6 - Hit Lots of Zombies! You begin the mission with three lives. The premise is exactly the same, pick up the power- ups that appear and use them to defeat as many zombies as you can. You will face all of the zombie types that you have seen so far. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #10 - Zombie Conga! Mission #10 - Zombie Conga! --------------------------- Goal - 45 seconds Lives - 1 There are no balls here, the only objective is to avoid the zombies for as long as you can. This mission is very similar to the missions in Sonic The Hedgehog where you had to avoid the projectiles from the robots, however, this mission is far easier. The zombies walk very slowly just as they have in all of the other missions and you won't have any zombies throwing racquets at you either. The big zombies will eventually make an appearance but they are still not very difficult. Lure the zombies to one corner of your half of the court and just walk around them and restart the process. Keep in mind that just brushing by a zombie does not necessarily mean that it will kill you, you have to momentarily stop beside the zombie or walk in between two zombies for them to get you. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #11 - Score With Zombies! Mission #11 - Score With Zombies! --------------------------------- Goal - 3200 points Lives - 3 This is also a pretty fun mission. The amount of zombies that can be on your screen during this mission is so staggering that you may even get a little lag. You begin with three lives and no more extra lives appear during the mission. Also, there is no time limit, so you do not have to get in a rush. Again, you will face all of the same zombies that you have seen throughout Curien Mansion. You get 20 points for each zombie that you drop - you get combo multipliers whenever you hit multiple zombies at once. Random items will appear on your half of the court that you can pick up for points, for example: the bronze coin is worth 200 points, the white coin is worth 400 points, and the diamond is worth 800 points. Occasionally, civilians will run up to the ball machine on the right. If you can get them safely through you will also receive points. Maybe you will get lucky and have several coins and diamonds appear on the court. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - Golden Axe ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - Singles Tournament ------------------------------- A singles tournament against Amy (All Around), NiGHTS (All Around) and then Gilius (Power). This is not a difficult tournament at all. Use the basic strategies that you know to take down all three contenders. Attack the net often to force your opponents to run around a lot and give them less time to react to your shots. Beware of Gilius' special shot whenever he is in Superstar State. Other than that, there is really nothing else to say. Unlocks: ------- New Character - Gilius ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - Jet Set Radio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - Collect Spray Cans ------------------------------- Goal - 15 spray cans Time Limit - 45 seconds Another collection mission. The skater grinds across the net and drops off 4 spray cans at a time. After you've collected the 4 or after they have vanished, he repeats the process. Your goal is to collect the spray cans within the time limit. Watch out for the troopers as the run around your half of the court because if you run into one it will throw you on the ground and you will lose time. You will not run into any real trouble during this mission. Unlocks: ------- Mew Mission - Mission #2 - Tag Attack: Simple Mission #2 - Tag Attack: Simple ------------------------------- Goal - 100 % Time Limit - 60 seconds This can be a fairly difficult mission. When the mission begins, you will get a view of the far half of the court. There you will see some graffiti painted - for this first tagging mission, you may either see "Jet Set Radio," "aiai," "YoYo," or "Gum." Pay attention to the colors of the graffiti that you see. The skater will grind by again on the net and he will drop paints of different color. The goal of this mission is to pick up the paint, hit a ball that the machine shoots at you, and hit the appropriate part of the graffiti that matches the color of the paint that you picked up. When you pick up a paint can on the court you get 5 paint cans on the bottom left corner of your screen. Each serve afterwards depletes one paint can and when you run out of paint you have to pick up more spray cans dropped by the skater. You can actually hit the skater with your shot and knock him off of the net. This wastes a little time but it is really no big deal for this mission. For example, let's say that you get "aiai." The "ai" on the left is red and the "ai" on the right is yellow. First of all, you have to pick up some red paint dropped by the skater. Now, hit the balls that the machine shoots at you and aim to the left and hit the "a" and the "i" to turn them red. Once that's done, grab some yellow paint and do the same thing for the letters on the right. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #3 - Avoid Rokkaku Police Mission #3 - Avoid Rokkaku Police --------------------------------- Goal - 30 seconds Time Limit - 60 seconds This can be another difficult mission. The goal is to avoid the police for as long as you can. This mission could potentially take a few tries. First of all, you need to learn the boundaries of the level and of your half of the court. You simply need to draw together the police officers that are running towards you, then you can run a circle around the court and repeat the process - draw the officers to one portion of the court and then run to the other side. Unlocks: ------- New Stage - Space Harrier New Mission - Mission #4 - Hit Combo Mission #4 - Hit Combo ---------------------- Goal - 3 hits Time Limit - 45 seconds This can be a very tricky mission. The skater grinds across the net and your job is to use the balls that are shot at you from the ball machines on either side of the court to hit the skater and knock him off of the net. He grinds across at varying speeds so there really is no sweet spot where you can stand and hit the ball to the same place every time and knock him off. I recommend that you stand somewhere on the right half of the court slightly behind the middle line. As the ball machines bounce out balls for you just time your shots so that the skater will grind into your ball. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #5 - Tag Attack: Tricky Mission #5 - Tag Attack: Tricky ------------------------------- Goal - 200% Time Limit - 90 seconds This mission follows the same concept as Mission #2 - Tag Attack: Simple, except that this time the graffiti marks on the opposite half of the court are more complex and occassionally the Rokkaku Police will run onto your half of the court. If one of the officers runs into you, you get knocked onto the ground and you lost all of your paint. Avoid the police, gather the proper spray paint cans from the skater as he grinds across the net, and hit the balls at the appropriate portions of the graffiti. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #6 - Singles Match Mission #6 - Singles Match -------------------------- A singles match against Beat (Speed). This is not a difficult mission at all because it seems as if Beat is terrible. Attack the net and hit the ball away from him to keep him running and you should win in no time. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #7 - Clean Up That Mess New Court - Jet Set Radio New Music Track - Everybody Jump Around Mission #7 - Clean Up That Mess ------------------------------- Goal - 250% Time Limit - 90 seconds This mission is similar to the Tag Attack missions but the concept is the opposite. Grab the sponges that the skater drops and hit the balls across the net at the completed graffitis to clean them up. Avoid the Rokkaku Police as you do this. This mission is not as difficult as the Tag Attack missions because you do not have to pick up a specific color of something in order to clean the graffiti off. An interesting note: when you are out of sponges, the announcer still says "Out of paint." Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #8 - Avoid Rokkaku S.W.A.T. Mission #8 - Avoid Rokkaku S.W.A.T. ----------------------------------- Goal - 45 seconds Time Limit - 90 seconds This mission is the same as Mission #3 - Avoid Rokkaku Police, except that the S.W.A.T. are far faster than the normal police were. Use the same strategy during this mission that you used during Mission #3. Draw the S.W.A.T. to one side of the court and then run around to the other side. You will not have very much time to stand still so stay on your toes. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #9 - Tag Attack: Expert New Music Track - Let Mom Sleep Mission #9 - Tag Attack: Expert ------------------------------- Goal - 300% Time Limit - 120 seconds This mission follows the same concept of the previous Tag Attack missions. This one is really no harder than the previous ones. Again, watch out for the Rokkaku police who will occasionally traverse your half of the court. It seems as if the skater who grinds across the net to give you spray cans will sometimes throw down paints of the wrong color that you don't need just to throw you off. Use the same basic strategies as before in order to complete this mission. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #10 - You Got Graffiti Soul Mission #10 - You Got Graffiti Soul ----------------------------------- Goal - 3 graffiti souls Time Limit - 120 seconds If there were a truly difficult Tag Attack mission, this would be it. In order to unlock a graffiti soul, you have to score a perfect tag. This means that the balls that you hit across the net must have the correct paint and they must hit the correct spot. If you miss once or hit the wrong spot on a tag, the tag is considered invalid and you must finish it in order to get a fresh graffiti to try. There is a mixture of easy tags with only two different colors and difficult tags that may have four or five different colors. This mission will probably take a few tries to complete. Just do what you've done before and you will eventually come out on top. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #11 - Score With Paint New Music Track - Fly Like A Butterfly Mission #11 - Score With Paint ------------------------------ Goal - 7500 points Time Limit - 60 seconds This is one of the most difficult missions in the entire game - perhaps even the single most difficult. It is the same as the Tag Attack missions except now you are awarded points for clearing graffitis. When the skater grinds across the net and throws down spray paint cans you can collect them for small points. Serve your balls across and color in the graffitis appropriately. For every graffiti you complete you are given extra time bonuses. If you can complete the graffitis quickly you will earn more points and if you can complete one without making any mistakes you will unlock a graffiti on your side of the court that you can collect for points. This mission will truly test your ability to aim your shots. The graffitis in this mission are a mixture of all of the easy and difficult ones that you have seen in previous missions, so hopefully you will get lucky and get a string of simple graffitis. If you're playing up close be sure to attack the net as much as possible and if you're playing in the back be prepared to save the balls that go by the person in front. The watery stage could possibly be a distraction and NiGHTS and Reala actually know how to serve properly, but I don't think that you will have any trouble during this mission. He is very fast and on long shots he can quickly cover the distance between opposite sides of the court to hit the ball back over. For all three opponents be sure you aggressively attack the net and you should be fine. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #3 - Singles Match New Character - Reala Mission #3 - Singles Match -------------------------- A singles match against NiGHTS (All Around). Your goal is to clear the entire wall. Try to clear color groups together. You may run into the problem of having a single puyo standing alone against the background - try your best to hit it. However, if you cannot hit the single puyo with a rebound, use the line that appears at your feet whenever you are serving to aim a ball straight at it. New Mission - Mission #8 - Clear Garbage Puyo Mission #8 - Clear Garbage Puyo ------------------------------- Goal - 15 garbage puyo Time Limit - 60 seconds You have already seen garbage puyo in previous missions, but you may not have realized what they are. They are the clear puyo with large eyes. A direct hit will not eliminate them. In order to clear them, you must hit a normal puyo or a color group that is immediately beside or above a garbage puyo. Continue to hit your rebounds successfully as you have in the previous missions and you should not have much trouble. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #9 - Puyo Request New Music Track - Endless Puyo Mission #9 - Puyo Request ------------------------- Goal - 30 puyo Time Limit - 90 seconds As the mission progresses, messages will appear on your screen telling you to clear puyo of certain color. As you hit the puyo on the wall, they will disappear, but you will only be credited for clearing the ones of appropriate color before a new color is announced. If you clear the correct color group of puyo then you will be credited for each individual puyo in the group. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #10 - Score With Puyo Mission #10 - Score With Puyo ----------------------------- Goal - 12,500 points Game Over - Full wall This is one of the more entertaining final missions. It is very easy, unlike the final mission in the Jet Set Radio level. You want to score points by clearing puyo while the wall constantly regenerates. As you score points, the meter on the right side of the screen will fill up. When it reaches full capacity you will go into "Fever Mode." Your wall will disappear and be replaced with a new wall with a few color groups. Your goal here is to clear the color groups and the entire wall before the meter on the right side of the screen empties. "Fever Mode" is very helpful with getting big combos to boost your score. If you can finish the fever wall before the meter empties then the meter will stay where it is, therefore making it easier to reach another level of "Fever Mode." Stay on your rebounds and watch out for the garbage puyo. Unlocks: ------- New Ballgame - Puyo Pop Fever ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - Samba de Amigo ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - Singles Match -------------------------- A singles match against Amigo (Power). Amigo is actually pretty terrible in this match - he should not be a challenge for you at all. You may receive quite a few points in this match from unreturned serves. Attack the net and make Amigo run. He should never get to Superstar State, but if he does, be careful because he has a very advantageous special shot. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #2 - Tournament Doubles New Music Track - Mambo Beat Mission #2 - Tournament Doubles ------------------------------- A doubles tournament with Amigo as your partner. In the first round you will play a match against Sonic and Amy. As always, use the common strategies that you know to defeat them. It seems as if Amigo has transformed since the previous mission, because he plays very well with you. If you can serve quickly, your opponents will hit the ball high into the hair and Amigo will get the opportunity to smash quite often. In the second match you will face AiAi and MeeMee. I found them to be a little more difficult than Sonic and Amy, but not much. Do what you've been doing all along and they should not give you too much trouble. Unlocks: ------- New Music Track - El Ritmo Tropical ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0.0 - Sonic the Hedgehog ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission #1 - Singles Match -------------------------- A singles match against Sonic (Speed) on his home turf and you get to serve first. As long as you have the basics down you should have no trouble against him. If you have mastered serving or smashing then you will have a great advantage over him - if you can get a perfect serve on the far edge of the court, or a smash at any time, Sonic will more than likely not return it. Dr. Eggman's serve meter fills up very slowly so he may be a good character to use for perfect serving. Otherwise, just make sure that you keep Sonic running from side to side on his half of the court. Attack the net and give him less time to react and you should be able to defeat him quite easily. Unlocks: ------- New Mission - Mission #3 - Collect Rings New Character - Amy Mission #3 - Collect Rings --------------------------
      Goal - 30 rings
Time Limit - 45 seconds

The object of this mission is to collect the rings as they appear on your half
of the court while avoiding spiky blocks that are being shot by robots on the
other half of the court. Each individual ring that you collect counts as a
single ring towards your total, while the special ring icons count as ten. You
may want to pick a fast character like Tails in order to complete this mission.
Note that the robots do not randomly fire at you. The blocks are fired directly
at you and in the general direction you are running. Use this knowledge to your
advantage and you can fake out the robots. Take note also that every 15 seconds
another robot appears (this stays true throughout all of the following missions
that are similar to this one). The mission ends whenever time expires or
whenever you get hit by a projectile.

Mission #6 - Collect Rings in Order

Goal - 30 rings
Time Limit - 60 seconds

Your objective now is to collect rings in a certain order while avoiding the
projectiles of the robots on the other half of the court. When a string of
rings appears one of the rings will be glowing a golden color - this indicates
the order in which you must get the rings. If you try to collect a ring out of
order it will disappear, so be careful. Again, I recommend that you select a
fast character like Tails. When the rings appear near half-court be careful
because the closer you are to the robots, the less time you have to react when
they fire their projectiles at you - this is especially true during this
mission because you have to collect the rings in a certain order.

Goal - 25 energy balls
Time Limit - 60 seconds

This is actually a very easy mission. As soon as it starts, grab the
invincibility powerup that appears. You will be protected by the energy shield
made famous in the Sonic the Hedgehog games. As projectiles are fired from the
other half of the court, run into them and deflect them with your energy
shield. As more robots appear, more projectiles are fired simultaneously. Take
note that whenever a new robot is appearing, your energy shield starts to wear
off. Avoid the projectiles and continue to grab the invincibility powerups as
they reappear.

This easy mission is also fairly fun. When it begins, run forward and grab the
speed powerup. This mission is the same as the previous "collect the rings"
missions but because you have the speed powerup you are expected to collect far
more rings than normal. Simply avoid the projectiles, collect the rings, and
grab new speed powerups as they begin to fade from you. Your new speed makes it
easier to fake out the robots. Also, new robots never appear so you only have
to worry about two of them the entire time.

Time Limit - 90 seconds

Maybe it's just me, but I found this to be an extremely difficult mission. The
premise is the same as the previous "Dodge Balls" mission, but now you have to
last for 45 seconds. In addition to that, the robots now shoot bombs as well as
the spiky projectiles. When a bomb hits the court it detonates a few seconds
later so now you have to factor that into your strategy for avoiding
everything. This mission becomes very hectic once you have four robots on the
other half of the court. As always, pick a fast character like Tails. Good
luck!

This mission is not very difficult at all. When it begins, you will see a
string of rings with one of them shining golden. Approach the rings from the
shining one and grab them all. As you collect them, new rings appear (this is
the "pattern). Follow this pattern around to steadily continue collecting
rings. The robots fire very slowly in this mission so they do not prove to be
as much of a hazard as they have been in previous missions. Again, I recommend
that you select a fast character like Tails.

robots will prove to be annoying as they fire projectiles at you. In the
beginning they only fire the spiky blocks, but as you progress through the
mission they will begin firing the bombs with delayed detonations at you. There
is no time limit, so take as much time as you need to be careful and avoid all
of the obstacles on the court. Again, choose a fast character like Tails and
you will be fine as long as you take your time.

players have more room to work with. Make sure you stay on the opposite side of
the court as Amy so that you will have the entire court covered. First you will
face off against Sonic and Tails. Use the same basic strategies that you have
used so far in the matches and you should be able to defeat them with no
problem. In the final round, you will play a match against Shadow and Dr.
Eggman. It seems that when Amy is on your team, she is a beast. She serves far
faster than she did whenever you played against her towards the beginning of
the Sonic the Hedgehog stage. Simply play your best and again, watch out for
Dr. Eggman's special as it can be very dangerous. Keep Shadow and Dr. Eggman
running and try to find open spots in the court where you can hit the ball. I
have found that Shadow and Dr. Eggman do not return smashes very well and you
may even be able to get an Ace if you serve well enough. One extra tip during
doubles, whenever one of the opposing players goes into Superstar State, you
can avoid his or her special shots by constantly hitting the ball back over the
net to the other player who is not in Superstar State.

mushrooms fall from the sky and then approach the court. They do not jump

the court. When a mushroom is getting too close to you, an indicator pops up

fireballs that they breathe at you - they cannot hurt you with direct physical
contact. With this in mind, attack them relentlessly without worrying about
them running into you. As soon as a Squilla appears out in the distance, get as
close to it as you can and constantly press the A Button to serve balls at it.
When it turns away from you to fly back out to the other corner of the court,

This can be a very difficult mission and it will probably take you several

very quickly. When the mission begins, notice on the other half of the court

character who serves very quickly and hope that you get some luck with the
gates. I have found that getting balls into the gate behind the back line is
far easier than getting balls into the gates on the sides.

New Mission - Mission #5 - Get Bananas!

Mission #5 - Get Bananas!
-------------------------

      Goal - 10 bananas
Time Limit - 60 seconds

This mission is similar to the previous one but it is far easier. This time,
there are bananas within the giant balls on the other half of the court. The
goal is to put the balls through the gates so that the bananas will be released
onto your half of the court. From there, you must collect the bananas that
appear. This mission is far easier than the last one because you have more time
and because all of the gates are open throughout the duration of the mission.
This pretty much means that you don't have to aim at any particular giant ball,
just aim your shot into a cluster of balls and you should get some through one
of the gates. Again, select a character whose serve meter fills quickly, like
Tails.

New Mission - Mission #6 - Make A Trickshot

Mission #6 - Make A Trickshot
-----------------------------

 Goal - 3 Trickshots
Balls - 5

This can be a challenging mission. Your goal is to serve your tennis ball, hit
the white ball on the other half of the court and make the black ball go
through a gate without the white ball also going through a gate (it does not
matter if the red balls go into a gate). For the first setup, serve your ball
directly into the center of the white ball to make the black ball go through
the gate. For the second setup, do the exact same thing to make the black ball
go through a gate. For the third setup, you want to hit the white ball in such
a way that it bounces of of a wall and comes at the line of red balls at an
angle so that the black ball goes through a gate. Anything after the first
three setups is not required, they are just to improve your grade on the
mission.

New Mission - Mission #7 - Clear The Moving Gate
New Music Track - Super Monkey Ball Monkey Fight

Mission #7 - Clear The Moving Gate
----------------------------------

      Goal - 5 balls
Time Limit - 60 seconds

This mission is similar to previous ones in that you must clear balls through a
gate. The difference is that here, there is only gate at the back line and it
moves from the left to the right and back throughout the entire mission. Try to
get the giant balls on the other half of the court somewhat in the center so
that when the gate passes through you can serve and hit them through. If you
are good at setting up rebounds and consistently returning them, you should
have no problem with this mission. Just keep moving the balls around and five
will eventually pass through for you.

-------

New Mission - Mission #8 - Singles Tournament

Mission #8 - Singles Tournament
-------------------------------

A singles tournament against AiAi (Spin), Amigo (Power), and then MeeMee
(Spin). There is not much advice to give here, just use the same basic
strategies that you have before. In my experience, MeeMee was horrible. All of
my serves went by unreturned and every time that I returned one of her serves,
she could not bring it back over the net. Attack the net and this mission
should be over shortly.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #9 - Monkeys Only
New Character - MeeMee

Mission #9 - Monkeys Only
-------------------------

Goal - 5 monkeys
Time Limit - 75 seconds

This mission is similar to some of the previous missions but with a twist. The
goal is to move balls into the open gate. Some balls contain monkeys while
other balls are empty. The twist is that for each ball containing a monkey that
goes through the gate you get a point, while each empty ball that goes through
the gate subtracts one of your points. If you can somehow single out the empty
balls and have them off to the side then this mission becomes far easier.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #10 - It's Raining Monkeys

Mission #10 - It's Raining Monkeys
----------------------------------

Goal - 10 balls
Time Limit - 90 seconds

This is probably the easiest of all of the missions that require you to move
the balls on the opposite half of the court through the open gate. Do what you
have been doing all along and you will be fine. The seemingly endless time
limit is what makes this mission so simple.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #11 - Monkey Ball Keep Up

Mission #11 - Monkey Ball Keep Up
---------------------------------

 Goal - 30 seconds
Balls - 1

This can be a fairly difficult mission. The goal is to keep the ball in play
for as long as possible by constantly hitting rebounds back over the net. The
only advice that I can really give you is to play back and take long shots and
to hit the tennis ball into clusters of balls on the other half of the court.
When you play back and take long shots, it takes longer for the tennis ball to
reach the other half of the court and for it to return to your side.

Unlocks:
-------

New Stage - NiGHTS
New Mission - Mission #12 - Score With Monkeys
New Music Track - Super Monkey Ball Bowling

Mission #12 - Score With Monkeys
--------------------------------

 Goal - 1600 points
Balls - 3

The point of this final mission is to clear the monkey balls to get points. You
only start out with 3 balls. Once you serve the tennis ball you can repeatedly
hit the rebounds to get more points. Every time a giant ball on the other half
of the court goes through the moving open gate, several things happen: you get
200 points, the bananas that were inside the ball are released onto your half
of the court and you can collect them to get even more points, and you get
another tennis ball. Take note that there is no time limit so you should use
whatever character you are most comfortable with. This mission is not difficult
in the slightest.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                          5.0.0 - Virtua Squad
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a very important strategy for all of the missions in the Virtua Squad
level and I could not think of a better place to put it than here. After you
press the A button to serve the ball, you can still aim a little until your
character's racquet actually makes contact with the ball. Keeping this in mind,
you can quickly move your crosshairs near a target, press A to throw the ball
into the air (you do not have to press A a second time to actually hit the
ball), and before your character hits the ball you can still move your
crosshairs to get precisely on target.

Mission #1 - Hit The Targets
----------------------------

      Goal - 5 targets
Time Limit - 45 seconds

This is a pretty unique level - it takes the game into a perspective that you
have not seen before. As the targets pop up from behind the barrels in the
center, from behind the car on the right, and from behind the wall on the left,
put your cursor onto their exposed bodies and press the A button to fire a ball
off at them. You have ample time to hit your five targets so this mission
should not be a challenge. Notice at the bottom left corner of the screen the
three hearts - these are your lives. If you take too much time shooting at the
targets, they will fire back at you. Each time you get shot at you lose a life
and once all three lives are gone the mission will end. Because time is a
factor in this mission, I suggest that you do not select a character like Dr.
Eggman whose serve meter fills very slowly. The lines that appear around the
targets give you a very important message: as the lines get closer to the
targets and turn from green to red they indicate that the target is getting
ready to fire at you, so be sure to make the targets with the fire indicators
your first priority.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #2 - Moving Targets

Mission #2 - Moving Targets
---------------------------

      Goal - 10 targets
Time Limit - 45 seconds

This mission is the same as the last mission except the targets are moving and
you must hit 10 of them. Line up your shots so that your ball will hit the
target in its stride. This is really the only difference between this mission
and the previous one, however, neither one is difficult.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #3 - Make A Justice Shot

Mission #3 - Make A Justice Shot
--------------------------------

      Goal - 10 Justice Shots
Time Limit - 60 seconds

A "Justice Shot" is whenever you hit the enemy's weapon. As you can see in all
of the targets that pop up, the enemies keep their weapons at the center of
their bodies, so aim here whenever you serve your balls. Thankfully, all of the
targets are stationary in this mission.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #4 - Avoid The Civilians

Mission #4 - Avoid The Civilians
--------------------------------

      Goal - 30 seconds
Time Limit - 60 seconds

Now you have a new variable added into the mix. In this mission you must hit
the targets who are aiming guns at you but you have to avoid shooting at the
civilians. The easiest way to know the difference between targets and civilians
is that the targets will have green and orange lines that seem to be echoing
off of them while the civilians will have nothing indicating what they are. You
also only have one life so you cannot wait too long to fire your shots. There
is a mixture of stationary and moving targets in this mission, so pay attention
when you fire your shots because you may be shooting at a moving target but
miss and hit a civilian, ending the mission.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #5 - Hit The Elite Targets

Mission #5 - Hit The Elite Targets
----------------------------------

      Goal - 15 elite targets
Time Limit - 60 seconds

This mission is similar to the previous one. The elite targets are no more
difficult to defeat than the regular ones. Quickly take down your targets and
watch out for civilians and you will be fine.

Unlocks:
-------

New Stage - OutRun
New Mission - Mission #6 - Make Every Shot Count
New Music Track - Gang Headquarters

Mission #6 - Make Every Shot Count
----------------------------------

 Goal - 30 seconds
Lives - 3

The goal in this mission is to stay alive for as long as possible. There is a
combination of regular and elite agents as well as civilians in this mission.
Not only do you have to worry about the agents shooting you, but every time
that you fire off a ball and miss, one of your lives is taken away.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #7 - Defeat Kong

Mission #7 - Defeat Kong
------------------------

      Goal - Defeat Kong
Time Limit - 75 seconds

Kong stands on the large orange container and he does not fire anything at you.
The agents that are trying to protect him appear from behind the orange cans
that are under the orange container. Simply alternate your shots between Kong
and his henchmen and you should be fine. It takes 10 shots to defeat him.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #8 - Clear The Docks

Mission #8 - Clear The Docks
----------------------------

Goal - 35 targets
Time Limit - 90 seconds

This is a very straightforward mission. Serve your balls at the targets and
make the ones with firing indicators your top priority. There is no trick to
this mission.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #9 - Survive!

Mission #9 - Survive!
---------------------

      Goal - 75 seconds
Time Limit - 120 seconds

Again, there is no trick to this mission either. Shoot the agents as quickly as
possible and watch out for the civilians. Make agents with firing indicators
your top priority. As the mission progresses and you get closer to the time
limit things can get a little hectic, however, you should be skilled enough by
now to quickly take down the agents.

Unlocks:
-------

New Mission - Mission #10 - Shoot To Score

Mission #10 - Shoot To Score
----------------------------

 Goal - 1600
Lives - 3

Again, there is no trick here. Besides, this is a very easy final mission. For
every civilian you hit, you lose a life. Shoot the agents to get points and
remember that Justice Shots earn you more points. Immediately take out the
agents who have firing indicators.

Questions: I openly accept questions under a few conditions: Be sure to look
through the FAQ to make sure that your question hasn't already been answered.
If it hasn't been answered, be sure that when you email me, to include the
subject of the question along with "Sega Superstars Tennis" in the subject
heading, or it will probably be deleted. It might also help a lot if you
include a little bit of the question in the subject.

Commendment and Criticism: Obviously, if you think I did a good job with this

before as well. Also, if there is anything you don't like about the FAQ, please

something in the subject or you will probably get deleted. If you send me

Chain Mail, Spam, or Flames, under ANY circumstances. I only accept these
things (chain mail) from a few of my very very close friends, and ONLY my

I refuse to tolerate anything like this, and I don't think there is much more

Anything with terrible grammar, but most of all, don't send me flames with
terrible grammar, because they will IMMEDIATELY be posted on GameFAQs. You know
what? Just don't send any flames at all, and we can all be happy.

As for grammar, please don't send me e-mail relating to spelling or grammatical
errors in the guide. I am constantly scoping this entire guide in the hopes of
making any corrections I can, and it would be deeply appreciated if we could
just leave it at that. You won't get flamed and your message won't get posted
on the GameFAQs boards, but I would really appreciate it if I didn't receive
any e-mails relating to spelling and grammar. I will find mistakes such as
those on my own. Thank you.
