MUCHO ARIGATO [IX] =========== [I] UPDATES =========== 06.19.04 - Final - This FAQ has become obsolete thanks to the completion of an HTML version found at http://www.crunkgames.com/therest/psfaq/ Please visit the above URL for the finished guide and please stop emailing! Much love! 06.15.03 - v2.0 - The FAQ has been given a monstrous overhaul in structure and style. A lot of the text has been edited as the result of it being fantastically stupid and unfunny. The game came out for the GBA during my year off from the FAQ and I've fallen in love with it all over again. I've completed the Corona Tower and the FAQ is approaching the home stretch. 04.12.02 - v1.6 - Wow. It's been a *long* time... I redid the entire mapping system, as my previous method led to strange inconsistencies and just plain weirdness. The new system makes use of a coordinate system, as well as more defined spaces. Naula Cave has been mapped in its entirety, with the Cave South of Scion already underway. The experience tables have also been buffed up a bit. Can't wait for this game to hit the GBA :) 02.20.01 - v1.5 - Added the Magic tables (VI.A and VI.B) as well as experience tables for three of the game's four characters (Section VII). The levels in these tables are somewhat low, as I am replaying the game from the beginning to collect this data. 09.07.00 - v1.4 - Wow, it's been a while. A while as in, say, seven months. But I'm back on track with this killer FAQ (I rhymed!) and plan on putting in a lot more work in the future. This time we've got a list of all the spells (section VI), an expanded Beastiary, as well as two new sections of the walkthrough (IV.C.2 and IV.C.3) to take you up to Naula Cave. 02.07.00 - v1.3 - I took a day off from school to supply you with the new Equipment section. Oh, and I was sick. Booyaka! 02.06.00 - v1.2 - Wondering how to recruit that cat-like thing with the long ears and the obligatory axe-wielding musclehead? Wonder no more, friends. 02.05.00 - v1.1 - Added the walkthrough for Camineet, as well as the surrounding areas. And hey, this thing might even be online today. Woo. 02.02.00 - v1.0 - Started the damn thing. Joy. Don't expect to get too far into the game with this FAQ... Despite its name, it only covers the basics of the game... so far. Just wait a while, I'll have the whole thing done someday. Don't say I never gave anything to humanity. ================= [II] INTRODUCTION ================= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [II.A] Intro to Phantasy Star -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Wildly popular in its day and having recently been rereleased on the Game Boy Advance, Phantasy Star is an 8-bit RPG that originally debuted on Sega's Master System in 1988 to top sales and reviews. The game was ridiculously advanced for its time, sporting big, brightly animated monsters, a respectable list of equipment and spells, and unique 1st person "3D" dungeons. The crux of the game's storyline rests on a girl named Alis who vows to kill the corrupt ruler of the Algol SOlar System, Lassic, after her brother Nero is struck down by Lassic's guards. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [II.B] Availability -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Naturally, the game is no longer in production for the archaic Master System, although you can track down a copy on eBay if you're willing to pay $30-$50 for it. A pretty good deal, considering that's about half of what it was originally sold for. Fortunately, the game now appears in Phantasy Star Collection (along with Phantasy Star II and III) on the Game Boy Advance. The version here is identical save for a few extremely minor differences: 1. Left button (in this case B) no longer cancels. 2. 3 save slots instead of 5. 3. Cut-scene text is now centered. 4. Dungeon travel is slightly slower. 5. Saving glitch - very rarely, the game will crash as you save. 6. Extremely minor graphical glitches when running from some enemies. Since these differences make virtually no difference in the game, this FAQ can be used for both versions. ==================== [III] PLAY MECHANICS ==================== -=-=-=-=-=-=- [III.A] Menus -=-=-=-=-=-=- -------------------- [III.A.1] Non-battle -------------------- From just about any screen in the game, pressing button 1 or 2 will call up the main menu. And looky-do, it's here for you. ____ |STAS| - See the stats and experience points of a character. |MAGC| - Cast any curative magic spell. |ITEM| - Manage items in your inventory. |SRCH| - Examine the immediate area (rarely used). |SAVE| - Record your progress anywhere. ---- These commands are self-explanatory, although the ITEM menu has a few submenus. When an item is selected with button 2, three new commands pop up. The USE command will activate the selected item. The EQP command is used only for weapons and armor, and also asks which character to equip the selected piece on. Finally, the handy DRP command lets you ditch excess baggage such as the plethora of Flashes that accumulate in your inventory after just a few bouts with Vampires and Sphinxes. The only time you'll want to use the SRCH command is when you need to locate a hidden item or accidentally decide to turn down opening an enemy's treasure chest. If you do turn it down, the game just leaves in front of you. If you still want it, just use the SRCH command to bring up the question again. If you don't want it, hit button 1 and walk away. ---------------- [III.A.2] Battle ---------------- ____ |ATTK| - Attack a random enemy. |MAGC| - Cast a battle spell. |ITEM| - Use an item to heal, escape, or talk to the enemy. |TALK| - Talk to the few enemies in the game that understand English. |RUN | - Lets you turn tail and moves you back one step. ---- These commands are also quite simple... The only thing worth mentioning is that the RUN command is rendered ineffective if you've hit a dead-end and encounter an enemy after rotating in place. To avoid this, take a step backwards after walking into a dead end, then rotate. The TALK command is rarely used, and gives the enemy a free round if you attempt to talk to a monster that cannot speak. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [III.B] Finding your way -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ---------------------------------- [III.B.1] Navigating through Algol ---------------------------------- Navigation in the world of Phantasy Star can be either simple or a bit difficult, depending. The simple areas are the ones that allow you to control Alis and party via a simple standard 8/16-bit view, with all four members of the party all lined up. This is employed only on the world map and in towns. The second view, 1st person, is used in caves, dungeons, and towers. This can be confusing for several reasons... First of all, until you obtain the compass, you have no idea in which direction you're walking. Fortunately, maps are provided in this FAQ for all of the caves, dungeons, and towers. Another major stumbling block in the world of the intrepid catacomb- lurker is the pitfall. These traps are seemingly randomly placed, and can make certain areas absolutely hellish without a map. For your convenience, pitfalls and other traps are labeled on the maps. Other traps include trapped treasure chests, containing either a spear trap (damages a random party member) or exploding traps (damages the entire party). If you don't have this FAQ handy, use Myau's TRAP spell to spot and disarm any potential traps you might find while exploring the dungeons. A few caves (like the cave to the GOvernor's mansion or the tunnel to Gothic) have been omitted because they're simple, one-path areas. I trust you guys are smart enought to find your way through a cave with no turns. ---------------------------- [III.B.2] How to use the map ---------------------------- In this FAQ, a map is included for each dungeon, along with the enemies and treasure located therein. Below is a brief key explaining the symbols used in these maps. [ ] = one space [@] = door [%] = locked door [&] = door sealed by magic [#] = pitfall [x] = pitfall landing [f] = both pitfall and pitfall landing [*] = treasure or event, listed by coordinates under map [e] = entrance [E] = exit (where applicable) [u] = stairs going up (with corresponding numbers if necessary) [d] = stairs going down Upon entering a cave, dungeon, or tower (referred to hereafter simply as "dungeons"), you will be facing one of the cardinal directions. Here's a quick review! N | W--*--E | S The compass is your best friend in Phantasy Star. After recruiting Odin, the compass is yours and can be activated at any time out of battle by selecting and using it from your inventory. By using it in a dungeon, you can see which direction you're currently facing, which can be extremely helpful if you've lost your way on the map. The compass will help you get right back on course. Note that not all dungeons start you out facing north; the maps in this FAQ appear as they would in the game. The compass rose above applies to every map I've made. Because of the 1st person POV, mapping events in the dungeons was a bit of trouble. However, if you see this... 1 [ ][ ][ ][*] 2 [ ] A B C D ...It means that you will see the event or chest that appears at D1 when you have stepped on square C1. In the game, it will appear that the event or chest is in *front* of you, one space ahead. Be aware that if something is marked on a square, you will have to deal with it one space ahead and not necessarily on the marked square. Also, note that since every dungeon mapped herein makes use of a coordinate system, finding out where a pitfall or a set of stairs leads is simply a matter of finding the same coordinates on the next floor of the dungeon. If you fall through a trap on space G14 of a tower's top floor, you'll land on space G14 of the floor below. Both locations will be indicated on the maps with # and x, respectively. --------------- [III.B.3] Items --------------- Phantasy has a decent array of items, although the majority of the non plot-related ones are pretty worthless. Items preceded by an asterisk are important to the plot or otherwise required. *Aeroprism: When held aloft on the top floor of the Tower of Baya Malay, the prism will reveal Lassic's Sky Castle. Found inside the Ice Dungeon on Dezoris. *Alsulin: Used to return Odin to normal. Found in the bottle hanging from Myau's neck once he joins. *Amber Eye: A precious gem found in the forehead of the dragon that lives in the Casba Cave. Traded to a Dezorian in the Corona Tower for the Eclipse Torch. Burger: Heals 40 HP. Sold in First Food Stores. Cola: Heals 10 HP. Sold in First Food Stores. *Compass: When used out of battle, the compass will tell you which way the party is currently facing. Also allows the party to navigate the Eppi Forest. *Crystal: Used in battle to weaken Lassic. Acquired from Damon the Soothsayer in the Tower of Baya Malay. *Dungeon Key: Used to unlock dungeon doors. Can be found in the Camineet Warehouse after speaking with the old man in Eppi. Unlimited use. *Eclipse Torch: A ceremonial torch held sacred by the Dezorians. Used in front of the Tree of Laerma to obtain the Nut of Laerma. Obtained by trading the Amber Eye to a Dezorian atop Corona Tower. Escaper: Same effect as Alis' Bye spell; allows you to flee combat with a 100% success rate. Flash: Illuminates the dungeon and allows the party to proceed. Necessary only until the Magic Lamp is purchased. Available in any town. Flute: When used in combat, the flute has a chance of putting enemies to sleep. Out of battle, it will transport the party to the outside of any dungeon you may be in. Found in Gothic after talking to a man in Uzo. Unlimited use. *Gas Shield: Allows the party to cross the gas field surrounding the town of Sopia. Purchased in Drasgow. *Hapsby: A robot constructed of pure Laconium. Will pilot the Luveno once you find him. *Hovercraft: A vehicle used to travel over Palma and Motavia's bodies of water. Can be found in an abandoned house in Bortevo after talking to a man in Casba. *Ice Digger: Used to plow through soft ice mountains on Dezoris. Purchased in Twintown. *Laconian Pot: Two of these exist. The first is obtained in Camineet by talking to Nero's friend Nekise and is used to trade for Myau. The second is acquired after defeating Dr. Mad and is used to store the Nut of Laerma. *Landrover: Vehicle used to travel across the Ant Lions of Motavia. Purchased in Casba. Magic Hat: Same effect as Alis' Chat spell; allows you to converse with some monsters. Magic Lamp: Same effect as Flash, only its use is automatic and unlimited. Miracle Key: Same effect as Noah's Open spell; can unlock doors sealed by magic as well as basic dungeon locks. Found in the Tower of Baya Malay. Unlimited use. *Nut of Laerma: A rare nut from the Tree of Laerma on Dezoris. Must be fed to Myau at the top of the Tower of Baya Malay to reach Lassic's Sky Castle. *Passport: Allows free access between Palma and Motavia via the Palman spaceport, where it is purchased after passing a brief exam. *Polymeteral: Used to dissolve the garbage surrounding Hapsby in Bortevo. Can be purchased at the Food store in Abion. *Roadpass: Allows access to the Palman spaceport. Purchased from the shopkeeper in Scion after you attempt to buy "Secrets" three times. Sphere: Same effect as Noah's Talk spell; allows communication with more advanced monsters. Transfer: Same effect as Alis' Fly spell; warps you back to the last church you visited. Not useable in dungeons. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [III.C] Battles -=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Phantasy Star was way ahead of its time as far as battles go. Enemies can not only fill up a sizable portion of the screen, but even sport attack animations; fairly good ones at that. Random encounters occur very erratically in PS. Sometimes you'll be plagued by battles every other step, and sometimes whole floors can be traversed without incident. When you encounter an enemy, the battle menu will pop up, as well as the names and HP of your party members and the enemy. Phantasy Star may have the neato-keeno battle animations, but it only allows one enemy sprite onscreen. To signify multiple enemies, multiple rows of enemy HP will appear, all with the same number to start. Choosing the ATTK command will force the character to hit a random enemy. This can be very troublesome when formulating a strategy, which is why most boss fights are actually quite simple; you've just got one target. There is a special breed of weapons available, the guns, that allow ALL of the enemies to be hit for precisely the same amount of damage. The degree of damage varies from gun to gun, but they can be very useful sometimes. Guns are only usable by Odin. Perhaps the biggest indicator of Phantasy Star's ahead-of-its-time play mechanics is the leveling of enemies along with the party. While enemies' HP maximums will stay constant throughout the game, their ATK and DEF stats will rise accordingly, allowing even the weaker enemies to inflict medium damage on a fully equipped level 30 party. The number of enemies that can be encountered in a given battle will never exceed 8, and can be calculated at any point in the game by taking the total number of party members and multiplying by two. So as Alis begins her adventure, she will only encounter Sworms and Scorpions by the 2's; by the time Noah makes the roster, enemies may strike in groups of 8. Stronger enemies will only appear in 6's and 4's, while the strongest of the bunch only attack 1 or 2 at a time. After you've sent your opponent back to the murky depths, you will be treated to a treasure chest. The amount of meseta (the universal currency of the Algo Solar System) and experience that are earned can be found in the beastiary. Multiply these numbers by the number of enemies encountered to calculate your earned exp. and meseta. Also, beware of trapped chests; the game is brutal about booby-trapping chests dropped by enemies or found in dungeons. If you've already obtained the maximum 65535 meseta, simply choose not to open the chest. If you're an emulating bastard (which I became to write this), you can make use of your emulator's save/load state functions to see which chests are trapped and avoid them. ==================== [IV] THE WALKTHROUGH ==================== -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [IV.A] Alis sets out -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ----------------------------- [IV.A.1] Camineet and Parolit ----------------------------- After the riveting intro, Alis finds herself in front of her home, a cozy little yellow dome with one room. The first thing you should do is wander up into the little cave to your right (the "warehouse") to fetch some cash and get a feel for the 1st person POV of the dungeons. ------------------------- [IV.A.1.a] Map: Warehouse ------------------------- 6 [*][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] 5 [ ] [ ] 4 [ ] [ ] 3 [ ] [ ] 2 [ ] [ ] 1 [*][ ][@][ ][ ][ ] e A B C D E F G H *A1 - 50 mesetas *A6 - Dugn. Key (unavailable at start, must activate plot flag) Enemies - none This is a very straightforward dungeon. Don't worry about random encounters, this place is enemy-free. Just grab the 50 mesetas and return to the outside to gear up with your newfound dough. -------------------- [IV.A.1.b] New items -------------------- Once you've made it back outside, head on over to the Armory (shop on the far left of the trio of shops) and purchase the Leather Shield (DEF+3) for Alis. ***CAMINEET*** ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | Suelo's house | Full recovery | 0 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Lth. Nekise, a man who knew your brother Nero, will give you a Laconian Pot at no cost. He also tells you that the man named Odin resides in the port town of Scion. The pot and information won't come into play just yet, but it is important that you visit a woman called Suelo. Suelo lives in the yellow house just below yours. Suelo makes the game a bit easier by healing your entire party for free during the game. You may return anytime you wish. Her method of restoration is much quicker and cheaper than having to heal everyone individually at the hospitals. Now that you're fit to cause a ruckus, go out the east exit. We need to raise a bit of money to get the adventure going. --------------------------- [IV.A.1.c] Outside The Wall --------------------------- Upon reaching the outside world, you will see two other towns and a big wall. Actually, the location in the upper left is a spaceport, accesible only after you've purchased a roadpass (done in the port town of Scion later). The lower area, Parolit, is a residential area like Camineet. You can find some strong weapons here, but nothing very affordable right now. If you like, head on in to check out the shops and speak with the residents. ***PAROLIT*** ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Irn. Here you can find Sworms (easy pickings) and Owl Bears (a wee bit tougher). This is a good place to level up if you're up for the challenge of the occasional Owl Bear, but if you want to fight a steady stream of Sworms, leave the enclosed area and fight outside of the wall. You may encounter a few Scorpions, which will pose a threat at low levels. When in doubt, run. *New enemies* _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ _______ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|-------| | Sworm | 8 | 2 | 3 | None | No | | Wing Eye | 11 | 2 | 6 | None | No | | Scorpion | 12 | 4 | 13 | None | No | | Maneater | 16 | 3 | 13 | None | No | | Owl Bear | 18 | 5 | 12 | None | No | | Deadtree | 23 | 4 | 21 | None | No | ------------------------------------------------------------ Other enemies in the area include Deadtrees to the west and Wingeyes to the north. These enemies aren't too tough and provide adequate exp. and meseta, but beware. It's a long hike out to their nests, and thanks to PS's unpredictale and erratic formulae, anything can go wrong. Wait till you've shot up a few levels before tackling them. It's also feasible to hunt the Maneaters to the south near Medusa's Cave, but you run the risk of encountering a stray Werebat or Skull-En, which is pretty much an assured game over. In fact, your best bet at this point would be to wail on the scorpions near the entrance to the wall. Assuming, of course, you've done some leveling up already with the Sworms. Your first job should be to level up and raise 75 mesetas for that Iron Sword in Parolit. Keep in mind that you can return to Camineet at any time for a free restoration by Suelo. Don't forget to save often. You'll kick yourself if you earned 300 meseta from Scorpions and Owl Bears and fell prey to an overzealous Sworm. Packing a few Colas for emergencies isn't a bad idea. Just keep in mind that this is the slowest part of the game... It all speeds up once you're able to knock out Owl Bears in only a hit or two. ------------------------------ [IV.A.2] Scion and the Secrets ------------------------------ ------------------------ [IV.A.2.a] Touring Scion ------------------------ Scion is a port town to the east of Camineet, a welcome sight to those accustomed to the mundanity of the residential areas within the wall. If you're looking for some armor, Scion's the place. ***SCION*** ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Lth.Armr | 28 | | Armory | Lgt.Suit | 290 | | | Zir.Armr | 1000 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Flash | 20 | | Second-Hand Shop | Transfer | 48 | | | Secrets | 200 | -------------------------------------------------- The Light Suit is better than the Leather Armor that Alis started the game with, but nowhere near as good as the expensive Zirconium Armor. If you have an extreme excess of mesetas (500+) pick up a Light Suit. If not, don't worry, it can wait. Things really get kooky at the Second-Hand Shop. Secrets? Huh? 200 mesetas seems to be a bit much for an unidentified item. Even so, an item like this must be imperative to the game, and it is. If you can't afford them right now, head back outside and earn the necessary cash. --------------------------- [IV.A.2.b] Raising the cash --------------------------- At this point, you should be more than strong enough to take out groups of Owl Bears without a problem. Alis should have already learned the Heal spell, as well as the occasionally useful Bye spell. The next goal here will be to raise 300 mesetas to purchase the necessary legal accesories to let Alis play space-traveller. 200 of those mesetas will go towards "Secrets," while the other 100 will make them worthwhile. ------------------- [IV.A.2.c] Haggling ------------------- Any attempt to purchase the secrets from the disgruntled shopkeeper in Scion will result in the his adamant refusal. On the third attempt, however, the shopkeeper gives in, and the Roadpass is yours. Take your newfound Roadpass and hike on over to either the west exit of Camineet or the north exit of Parolit and talk to the guards. They will bow to your new Roadpass and grant you access to the spaceport, where we'll be spending that leftover 100 mesetas on a Passport. ----------------------------- [IV.A.3] Acquiring a Passport ----------------------------- You'll see a couple of shops at the north end of the platform; the one on the left is a First Food Shop, while the other is a shop for acquiring a Passport. ***SPACEPORT*** ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | First Food Shop | Cola | 10 | | | Burger | 40 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | Passport shop | Passport | 100 | -------------------------------------------------- The woman in the Passport shop won't just hand the Passport over. After being asked to show your Passport, walk up to one of the big red ships and hop aboard; we're bound for the desert planet of Motavia. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [IV.B] A new friend -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------- [IV.B.1] Myau ------------- Remember the Laconian Pot that was given to you by Nekise back on Palma? His contribution to the party now comes in handy. Head north from the spaceport to the town of Paseo and stroll into the "shop" on the right. You'll meet an odd guy who asks you if you'd pay 1 billion mesetas for the rare animal he has. Say no, then choose yes when he asks to trade for your Laconian Pot. Your new friend, Myau, also comes with a gift: a bottle of Alsulin that can turn the stoned (as in "turned to stone") Odin back to flesh and blood. Odin's exact whereabouts are a bit hazy, so check out the other shops in Paseo for now. ***PASEO*** ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Sht. You'll notice that the gun raises Odin's ATK, but this will NOT be reflected in battle. The Needle Gun will always do 5 damage to every enemy. Pick one up for Odin, at least until you have enough money for a Ceramic Sword; the gun will allow Odin to do a decent amount of damage even in the face of his pathetic starting stats. Hunt the Were-Bats of Eppi forest until you can afford one, but watch out -- you'll probably only be able to handle two at a time, maybe three if you enter at full strength and use up all of Alis' Heal spells. But the main reason for your trip to this backwater village is to obtain a clue to finding the Dungeon Key. Speak with the old man in the house with the gold dome. The "outskirts of Parolit" that he speaks of is the warehouse where you obtained your first 50 mesetas. Once you trigger this flag, the chest ~magically~ appears back home. Head back to Camineet and enter the warehouse. Instead of making that first left, continue straight and pick up the key in a chest at the dead end. Now that you have the Dungeon Key you can plow through locked doors, although magically-sealed doors will have to wait. ---------------------- [IV.C.3] The Shortcake ---------------------- Now would be a good time to set up an audience with the governer of Paseo, but any attempts to do so will see you turned back by a robot demanding a gift. A nearby citizen hints that the man has a weakness for sweets, meaning we need to locate some sort of delicious tribute in order to meet with the mayor. This is where the challenge of the game starts to pick up. The cave with the cake shop, Naula Cave, is four levels deep and houses a few tough monsters. The actual floors aren't that big, but the cave's twists and turns can pose a threat to players that lose their way. When in doubt, use your compass and try to approximate your location on the map provided. Make sure that you enter Naula Cave with 500 mesetas or more. It seems that the economy of the Algol system puts a high price on baked goods -- it'll run you 1000 mesetas for a Shortcake, half of which you should be able to make en route. To reach the cave, exit Camineet and follow the wall north until you see the shoreline, then follow that north to the cave's entrance. *New enemies* _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ _______ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|-------| | Fishman | 42 | 11 | 42 | None | No | | Tarantul | 50 | 10 | 51 | None | Yes | | Skeleton | 53 | 13 | 25 | None | No | | Vampire | 67 | 15 | 71 | Flash | No | ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------- [IV.C.3.a] Map: Naula Cave -------------------------- ~1F~ 8 [ ][ ][ ][e] 7 [ ] 6 [%] 5 [ ] 4 [ ][ ][d] 3 [ ] 2 1 A B C D E F G H I ~B1~ 8 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] 7 [ ] [ ] 6 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ] 5 [ ] [ ] [d] 4 [u][ ][ ] 3 [ ] [ ] 2 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][*] 1 A B C D E F G H I *G2 - Sht. Note: Okay, so the Governor of Paseo refers to Noah as a "she," I still think it's a dude, and that's how this FAQ will refer to him... her... Noah. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [IV.E] Bulking up -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -------------------- [IV.E.1] What to buy -------------------- To conquer the Cave South of Scion, it is strongly recommended that you purchase the following things: (the TRULY ambitious can outfit Alis and Odin with the 15,000 meseta Diamond Armor sold in Paseo, the best armor available to her in the game). Some of this you should already have from before the Maharu Cave, but if you don't, make sure to buy everything now. Poor Noah has very little equipment in the game, so no upgrades for him are available just yet, save for the Short Sword you found in Naula Cave. If you sold it, pick up another in Paseo on the cheap. It's only one point stronger than the Wooden Cane, but every little bit helps. In order of importance: - Thick Fur for Myau (cost: 630, DEF+30; In Paseo) - Ceramic Sword for Alis (cost: 1220, ATK+31; In Parolit) - Ceramic Sword for Odin (cost: 1220, ATK+31; In Parolit) - Zirconium Armor for Odin (cost: 1000, DEF+30; In Scion) - Ceramic Shield for Odin (cost: 1400, DEF+23; In Camineet) - Ceramic Shield for Alis (cost: 1400, DEF+23; In Camineet) - Light Suit for Alis (cost: 290, DEF+15; In Scion) - Magic Lamp (cost: 1400, acts as reusable Flash; in Parolit, this thing lasts the whole game, buy it!) - Short Sword for Noah (cost: 30, ATK+4; In Paseo) The fastest way to accumulate this cash is to fight the Were-Bats that roam Eppi forest. One battle with four of the bats will yield 44 Exp. and 252 mesetas. Don't waste your time with the Fishmen that hang around by the beaches; they give the same amount of experience as Were-Bats, but not nearly as much money. On top of that, they're harder to kill. Pass. If you think your party is advanced enough, you might also want to try hunting Barbarians on Motavia, en route to the Maharu Cave; a battle with 8 of the little guys will net you a hefty 712 mesetas. As you might've guessed, the cave is located south of Scion, on the eastern peninsula jutting out into the sea. It's loaded with enemies, traps, and treasure, so come ready to fight. ----------------------------------- [IV.E.1.a] Map: Cave South of Scion ----------------------------------- ~1F~ 14 [ ][ ][ ][ ][@][ ][ ][*] 13 [ ] [ ] [ ] 12 [*][ ][ ] [ ][ ][#] [*][@][ ][ ] 11 [ ][ ] [ ] 10 [ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ] 9 [ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ] [ ] 8 [ ] [ ] [ ] 7 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [@] 6 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 5 [ ] [ ] [*] [ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ] 4 [ ] [d] [ ] [ ][ ] [ ] [ ] 3 [ ] [ ][ ][ ] [ ] [ ] [%] 2 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ][ ][ ] [ ] 1 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ] [*] [e] A B C D E F G H I J K L M N *C12 - 20 meseta *E5 - empty (no trap) *N14 - Cola *K12 - "No man that goes into the room in the far corner has ever come out alive! Bum #1: "Don't go near the tower at the far end of the narrow road which goes from the gothic forest through the mountains. A magic beast lives there. Look at it and ya turn to stone." Bum #2: "Thanks! This was once the lab of Dr. Luveno. He went bonkers, though and be imprisoned in Triada to the south of here." Our first homeless friend refers here to Medusa's Tower, which we will tackle much later on to acquire Odin's best weapon. For now, though, we're going to follow the lead that Bum #2 gives us and attempt to track down this Dr. Luveno. The good doctor is our ticket to unrestricted interplanetary travel, so finding him is a top priority. Definitely pick up the Magic Lamp at the second-hand shop if you haven't bought yours yet (just one will last for the rest of the game) and exit Gothic to the east (the bum on the western end turns you away for now). -------------------------- [IV.F.2] Liberating Luveno -------------------------- Head south, directly between the coastline and the mountains and take the first left you see. Talk to the uppity young man in the room and he'll agree to help the Doctor build your spaceship. Back at Gothic, Luveno tells you that he requires a fee of 1200 mesetas, which you should have already built up. Give the Doctor his cash and pop in on the assistant if you like (he turns right back into a jerk), then reenter the Doc's house two or three more times until he tells you that your new ship (The Luveno!) is completed. But d'oh, he points out that you don't know how to fly a ship, that you need to find a robot names Hapsby (which you may remember one of the prisoners in Triada mumbling about). Myau should Cure anyone who gets hit while Alis and Odin pummel away. Noah should have the Wind spell, so be sure to cast it every turn. Don't be discouraged if you die a few times, this guy is really tough. It might be wise to buy Laser Shields for Alis and Odin, but it's not necessary; I managed to beat him without them (and lots of Curing).Once he's down, grab your new Laconian Pot and head back through the tunnel. Double check to make sure that you bought the Polymeteral and at least one Laser Shield and backtrack back to Bortevo; it's quicker if you cast Alis' Fly spell (assuming the last church you visited was in Camineet) and walk back. Once back in Bortevo, go into the only house with a door (a blue door, to be exact) and select the Polymeteral from your inventory. The pile of garbage will dissolve, and the hardheaded Hapsby emerges. Take Hapsby and head back to Gothic. After meeting with Dr. Luveno and showing him your latest acquisition, the bum on the west side of town will let you pass through to where your ship is. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [IV.G] Bulking up redux -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Now that we have access to all three planets, it's a good time to begin hunting for some better equipment. Out of the following list, the top two items are strongly recommended; splurge on the rest only if you've got the the money or the desire to earn it. In order of importance: - Laser Gun for Odin (cost: 4120, ATK+50; In Skure) - Gloves for Myau (cost: 3300, DEF+40; In Skure) - Light Saber for Alis (cost: 2980, ATK+46; In Uzo) - Laser Shield for Alis (cost: 4800, DEF+30; In Abion) - Wand for Noah* (cost: 1200, ATK+10; In Skure) *NOTE: While crappy as a weapon, the wand really comes in handy as an item in battle. It might not have any offensive power, but it acts as an Escaper (100% escape rate) as long as you use it from your inventory. In short, the Wand is to the Escaper what the Magic Lamp is to the Flash. Pick one up for emergencies, and pick up a second if you have any leftover cash (not likely, I know). You'll definitely want to buy a wand at some point, but I'll let you know when you'll absolutely need it (Noah has a one-on-one fight coming up, if you're curious). ---------------- [IV.G.1] Dezoris ---------------- Approach the Luveno and Hapsby will ask you for your destination; we obviously can't go to Gothic since we're already there, and we don't want to go to Uzo on Motavia just yet, so select Skure from the list so that we can finally visit the third and final planet of the Algol Solar System (and pick up Noah's best weapon). After you land, enter the cave nearby and follow the path to the end. Note that the Evilheads give a buttload of money; it might be a good idea to hang around and knock a few down. *New enemies* _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ _______ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|-------| | Bl.Slime | 40 | 5 | 19 | None | No | | Evilhead | 86 | 20 | 136 | None | Yes | ------------------------------------------------------------ ***SKURE*** ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Wand | 1200 | | Armory | Lasr.Gun | 4120 | | | Gloves | 3300 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | First Food Shop | Cola | 10 | | | Burger | 40 | |--------------------------------------------------| | | Flash | 20 | | Second-Hand Shop | Magc Hat | 20 | | | Sphere | 30 | -------------------------------------------------- Greet the locals in the subterranean town and head for the shops. If you want some variation, feel free to head aboveground and try your hand at some of the native monsters on the surface of Dezoris (much like the Evilheads, the Dezorians are loaded). You'll notice that the Second-Hand Shop sells Spheres; these allow you to communicate with some monsters but is more powerful than Alis' Chat spell (and equal to Noah's Tele), but still pretty much useless. Don't forget that Noah can cast Cure out of battle! For this reason it's also practical to keep his in-battle casting to a minimum. After you've purchased everything necessary in Skure, head back to the Luveno and tell Hapsby that you'd like to visit Uzo. -------------------------- [IV.G.2] Motavia revisited -------------------------- All we really need from Uzo is a Light Saber for Alis if you want and some choice bits of information from the citizens; they say that there is a town called Casba to the south and that the dragons that live in the cave have giant gems in their heads. This six- wheeled behemoth allows us to travel over the Ant Lions' nests and access the entire land surface of Motavia. If you don't have the 5200 mesetas, hunt around inside the Casba Cave until you do. 2) Just above the pair of Second-Hand Shops is a pair of houses. Enter the one on the right and speak with the man inside. He will ask you if you've ever heard of the Hovercraft; tell him Yes and he'll explain that he bought one in Scion and abandoned it in Bortevo. The guy sets off a flag, so you've got no choice. --------------------------------- [IV.G.3] The Flute and Gas Shield --------------------------------- Once you've done those two things, return to Uzo and enter the house next to the church. Answer No when the man asks if you've heard of the Magic Flute, and he'll tell you that he buried one in the outskirts of Gothic Village (what is it with Motavians ditching all their junk on Palma?!). Fly back to Gothic and search in front of the tree in the cul-de-sac in the southwest corner of town. This Flute will come in handy -- using it in battle may put some enemies to sleep, but the real kicker is that using it out of battle will warp the party outside the current dungeon. Extremely handy. Flute in hand, Leave Gothic through the east exit and head south and around the mountains, through the marsh to Bortevo (you can try out your now Landrover if you like, it's faster than walking). Upon entering Bortevo, walk into the house nearest to you and use the Search command to uncover the Hovercraft. Hapsby restores it to working order, giving you unrestricted access to most of Palma and Motavia. Like the Landrover, the Hovercraft must be selected from the item menu, but only when the party is standing adjacent to a body of water. The only new enemy you might run into is the Wyvern, a variation on the Serpent. *New enemies* _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ _______ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|-------| | Wyvern | 110 | 26 | 125 | None | No | ------------------------------------------------------------ Once in the water, head directly west and take note of the tower sitting on a nearby island; Remember this location, but continue west for now until you see the Cave South of Scion. Disembark the Hovercraft (same way you embarked) and enter the town of Drasgow with at least 1000 mesetas (knock around a few Were-Bats in the nearby Eppi Forest if you need a little more). The town doesn't have any shops, save for one merchant hidden in a cave. The man sells a key item that will enable you to earn both Odin's best weapon and best shield in the game. Make sure to visit the other house in the second row and tell Miki how much you love Sega games. Exit Sopia and walk east until you hit the shoreline. Climb into your Hovercraft and continue east to an island with an Ant Lion and several cacti on it. Disembark and walk to the southmost space on the island; from here, walk up one space and right one space. Alis and Odin should attack as usual, and Noah should cast Wind. He may have learned Thun by now, but against a single enemy Wind does the same damage for fewer MP. Medusa will leave behind the fabled Laconian Axe. Use the Flute to warp out of the tower and return to Camineet to stay at Suelo's Laconian Axe vs. Laser Gun: A lot of guides recommend the Laser Gun for Odin's final weapon, and I can see their point. It's got 100% accuracy, and 20 damage on any enemy in the game isn't too shabby. But! If you're fighting against normal enemies later in the game, the Axe has its uses. Enemies towards the end of the game tend to only appear in 1's and 2's, meaning that the potential of the Laser Gun can't be fully exploited. A level 30 Odin armed with the Laconian Axe, on the other hand, can do upwards of 60 damage per hit on some of the later enemies, outperforming the Laser Gun especially against single enemies. Both weapons are excellent choices, and you can honestly choose either one without experiencing much more difficulty or advantage. Personally, I prefer the Axe because it's his final weapon! Poor Odin got turned to stone and had to be rescued by Alis and Myau before getting a rematch with the gorgon. You will surface in Twintown, famous for it's Palman-hating Dezorians. It's not all bad, though, as one of the nearby Second-Hand Shops contains our last major purchase. Take note that the localizers chose to give the Dezorians hilarious French accents. ***TWINTOWN*** ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Flash | 20 | | Second-Hand Shop | Escaper | 10 | | | Transfer | 48 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | Second-Hand Shop | Ice Digr | 12000 | -------------------------------------------------- We're really here for the Ice Digger, but feel free to gather information from the left side of town -- the citizens on the right are outright liars. Walk directly above the exit from Ice Cave 3 and follow the mountains northwest along path, straight into Guaron Morgue. ----------------------------- [IV.G.8.e] Map: Guaron Morgue ----------------------------- Like all morgues, Guaron is populated entirely by zombies, whose torturously long attack animations are far more threatening than their rotten maws. This dungeon is ridiculously easy if you pay careful attention to the map; there is a trap that Myau MUST disarm (*I8) before you can collect the Laconian Armor. There are also a few set fights with zombies in some of the dead-ends, so... stay out of the dead ends! You can tell that these are set fights because walking into these dead-ends backwards forces the party to turn around and enter battle, something that happens only in these instances. If you stick with the map of the first floor, you shouldn't even need to use the basement map. Once you equip the Laconian Armor on Odin, Flute out, and if you think your party needs a heal, head back to Twintown and do so. ~1F~ 13 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ] 12 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 11 [ ] [ ][ ][ ] [ ] [d] [ ][ ][ ] 10 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 9 [ ][ ][*] [ ] [ ][ ][ ] [ ] 8 [ ] [ ] [#] [d][ ][ ] 7 [ ][ ][*] [d] [@] 6 [ ] [ ] [ ][ ][ ] 5 [ ][ ][ ] [*] [ ] [ ] 4 [ ] [#][ ] [ ][ ][ ] 3 [*][ ][ ] [ ] [d][ ][ ] 2 [ ] [ ] 1 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][@][ ][ ][*][ ][ ][e] A B C D E F G H I J K L M N *A3 - fight w/Zombie (no special treasure) *C7 - fight w/Zombie (no special treasure) *C9 - fight w/Zombie (no special treasure) *I5 - Laconian Armor *K1 - Evilhead: "What have you come for? When you hit daylight, you'll find yourself in a large clearing. To the north is Corona Tower (referncing the sun, not the beer) while crossing the plain to the west brings us to what we will refer to as Ice Dungeon II. It is here the Laconian Shield lies, and here that we are headed. To avoid getting lost, simply follows the mountains below you all the way west until you hit the cave. ------------------------------- [IV.G.10.a] Map: Ice Dungeon II ------------------------------- The second Ice Dungeon is a difficult cave, not only because it houses several strong monsters, but also due in large part to its complex design. The entire thing is constructed of six floors, each with several staircases. Be sure to follow the map closely at all times to avoid getting lost and don't be afraid to use your compass if you lose your bearings. You still might have a rough time even using the map to make a beeline for the Laconian Shield, but perservere and you will be greatly rewarded with the last bit of equipment needed for Alis, and in fact the party. ~1F~ 14 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][*] 13 [ ][ ][ ][*] [ ] 12 [ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [d] 11 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ] [ ] 10 [#] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 9 [@] [ ] [d] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 8 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 7 [ ] [d] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 6 [ ] [ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ] 5 [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ] [ ] 4 [ ] [ ] [ ] 3 [*] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] 2 [ ] [ ] 1 [e] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][*] A B C D E F G H I J K L M N *C3 - Dezorian: "Be careful up ahead. Note that Alis's FLY spell is rendered ineffective while inside a dungeon. _______ ____ ___________ ______ ___________________________________ | Spell | MP | Used by | Lv. | Effect | |-------|----|-----------|------|-----------------------------------| | HEAL | 2 | Alis | 4 | Heals 20 HP | | CURE | 6 | Myau,Noah | 6,1 | Heals 80 HP* | | FLY | 8 | Alis | 16 | Warps to last church visited | | TRAP | 2 | Myau | 15 | Checks for and disarms traps | | EXIT | 4 | Myau,Noah | 17,6 | Warps out of dungeon** | | OPEN | 4 | Noah | 17 | Opens all kinds of doors | | RISE | 12 | Noah | 20 | Revives a character to full life | ------------------------------------------------------------------- *For Noah, the CURE spell is only useable out of battle. **Obsolete soon after you even get it thanks to the Flute. -=-=-=-=-=-=- [VI.B] Battle -=-=-=-=-=-=- The amount of support magic in this game may outnumber the amount of offensive magic, but most of the supportive spells are kind of worthless; spells like ROPE and WALL wear off too quickly to be of any use. Note that the (2 shots) and (3 shots) beside FIRE and WIND means that the caster will shoot two or three shots respectively; in a group of 6 enemies, only 2 will be hit by the FIRE spell. When fighting just one enemy, however, FIRE will hit the same target twice for 20 damage. _______ ____ ____________ ______ ______________________________ | Spell | MP | Used by | Lv. | Effect | ----------------------------------------------- =============== [VIII] BESTIARY =============== Phantasy Star had a very impressive array of enemies and bosses for its time. Below are all of them, including the spoils victory over them entails. Their ability to speak (or lack thereof) is also noted, whether it be through the TALK command or a communicative spell. Note that anything that isn't a Flash or a Cola can only be won from a boss, and only once (duh). _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ _______ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|-------| | Sworm | 8 | 2 | 3 | | | | Wing Eye | 11 | 2 | 6 | | | | Scorpion | 12 | 4 | 13 | | | | Maneater | 16 | 3 | 13 | | | | Gr.Slime | 18 | 4 | 8 | | | | Owl Bear | 18 | 5 | 12 | | | | G.Scorpi | 20 | 5 | 11 | | | | Scorpius | 22 | 8 | 27 | | | | Deadtree | 23 | 4 | 21 | | | | GiantFly | 25 | 7 | 32 | | | | Goldlens | 28 | 9 | 24 | | | | Rd.Slime | 29 | 11 | 31 | | | | Evildead | 30 | 14 | 8 | | | | N.Farmer | 38 | 5 | 8 | Cola | * | | Bl.Slime | 40 | 5 | 19 | | | | Crawler | 40 | 9 | 30 | | | | E.Farmer | 42 | 9 | 30 | Cola | * | | Fishman | 42 | 11 | 42 | | | | Tarantul | 50 | 10 | 51 | | * | | Were Bat | 50 | 11 | 63 | Flash | | | Wight | 50 | 18 | 40 | | | | Skeleton | 53 | 13 | 25 | | | | Barbrian | 54 | 10 | 89 | Cola | * | | Skull-En | 57 | 18 | 37 | | | | Marman | 58 | 14 | 43 | | | | Lich | 60 | 22 | 33 | | | | Manticor | 60 | 30 | 49 | | * | | Executer | 62 | 12 | 63 | | | | Shelfish | 62 | 16 | 46 | | | | Ant Lion | 66 | 8 | 7 | | | | Vampire | 67 | 15 | 71 | Flash | | | Ghoul | 68 | 16 | 26 | | | | Leech | 70 | 15 | 47 | | | | Dezorian | 76 | 18 | 105 | | * | | Sphinx | 78 | 21 | 58 | Flash | * | | Stalker | 79 | 22 | 87 | | | | Serpent | 80 | 23 | 96 | | | | Sandworm | 82 | 20 | 129 | | | | Elephant | 86 | 17 | 38 | | | | Evilhead | 86 | 20 | 136 | | * | | Zombie | 87 | 20 | 27 | | | | Ammonite | 90 | 19 | 71 | | | | Octopus | 90 | 20 | 64 | | | | Nessie | 93 | 28 | 101 | | | | Batalion | 100 | 21 | 59 | | | | Robotcop | 110 | 25 | 156 | | | | Sorcerer | 110 | 26 | 120 | | | | Wyvern | 110 | 26 | 125 | | | | Androcop | 120 | 29 | 123 | | | | Giant | 120 | 30 | 119 | | | | Tarzimal | 125 | 0 | 0 | | * | | Horseman | 130 | 30 | 148 | Flash | * | | Amundsen | 133 | 32 | 120 | | | | Marauder | 135 | 30 | 173 | | | | Magician | 138 | 32 | 187 | | | | Golem | 140 | 24 | 150 | | | | Frostman | 140 | 36 | 128 | | | | Gr.Dragn | 160 | 53 | 176 | | * | | Shadow | 165 | 60 | 0 | | * | | Gd.Dragn | 170 | 100 | 0 | | | | Rd.Dragn | 175 | 65 | 193 |Lac.
