Version History =================== Version 1.0 (2/24/10) - I made the guide and..........yeah >_______> I guess this is considered the first draft. I wanted make everything as perfect as possible though. ================ 2. Introduction ================ Earthbound is a game for the SNES that was released in 1995 in the US. It is a unique game best known for its quirky humor and emotional scenes. This FAQ will detail all the equipment found in the game. I will list its stats, location, and my general opinion about it. I hope to help players, new and old, get information about different equipment and to experiment with different setups. Now this guide will contain mild, vague spoilers. I won't spoil the plot, but I will spoil equipment (obviously >_>), different locations in the game, and certain events (ie: [Person] is absent from party), but I won't talk about the context or details, so that you will still enjoy the plot if you're a first time player. ====================== 3. Stats and Ailments ====================== Now, before we begin, I'll go over the different stats and ailments related to the equipment. ---------- 3a. Stats ---------- Offense: Its value is related to how much damage you can dish out. The more points you have, the more damage you'll give to the enemy. Equipping Weapons will help raise this stat. Defense: Its value is related to how much damage you take. The more points you have, the less damage you take from enemy attacks. Equipping different pieces of Armor will help raise this stat. Speed: Speed determines a ****load of things! Speed governs who goes first in battle. The more speed you have, the sooner you will move in a round. Speed also increases your chances of running away from a battle. Speed will reduce the likelihood of an enemy dodging your attack (this includes Ness's PSI Rockin and Jeff's Bottle Rockets!) You can raise your speed by equipping certain types of Body Armor. Guts: Do you have it? Guts is a very useful stat! The more Guts you have, the better chance you have of landing a SMAAAAASH! attack on an enemy (or a critical attack in layman's terms >_>). Also, having more Guts means you'll get sunstroke less often in the deserts. Finally, Guts helps you survive mortal attacks from enemies (your HP will stop at 1, instead of 0). You can increase Guts by equipping certain Weapons. Vitality: Vitality determines how much HP you get during level up. The more Vitality you have, you more HP you are granted (typically, you should have 15 times more HP than Vitality). Unfortunately, you can't increase Vitality through equipment. IQ: Shows how smart you are, dummy! Also, for PSI users, it determines how much PP they receive during level up. The more IQ you have, the more PP you are granted (typically, you should have 5 times more PP than IQ). Jeff (the only non-PSI member) utilizes his IQ to fix broken items and weapons. The more IQ he has, the more items he can fix. Unfortunately, you can't increase IQ through equipment. Luck: Luck determines how often certain Assist PSI moves hit an enemy. It also has a heavy influence on how often Jeff's gadgets and battle items hit an enemy. The more luck you have, the more likely you'll hit an enemy with these. You can increase Luck by equipping certain types of Arm Armor and Other Armor. But at the end of the day, the question remains the same: Do you feel lucky, punk? Accuracy: Not a listed stat, but it's part of the gameplay. Weapons typically have this stat. It's measured using a fraction; with 16 being the denominator (ie: a stat of 15/16, meaning that there is a 1/16 chance that the attack will miss). The lower the fraction, the less likely your attack will hit. I owe a big thank you to the following page for helping me find out what some of the stats do. Most of the credit from this section belongs to this: http://starmen.net/mother2/gameinfo/technical/equations.php ------------- 3b. Ailments ------------- I'm only going to list the relevant ailments for equipment. Uncontrollable Crying: It decreases your accuracy by 8/16 (ie: 15/16 - 8/16 = 7/16) Can be healed after battle or through PSI Healing Beta. If your character has Body Armor that blocks Flash attacks, they'll be resistent to crying through Flash (but may fall victim through other forms of attack). Sleep: You are unable to act until your character wakes up. Can be healed by waiting until the character wakes up, or through PSI Healing Alpha. Certain types of Arm Armor can block this. Sun Stroke: Your character takes damages continuously. Is caused by staying in the desert too long. Can be healed through PSI Healing Alpha. Increasing your Guts by equipping Weapons will reduce the chance of coming down with sun stroke. Feeling Strange: Causes a character to target random allies and enemies with their attacks. Can be healed by ending the battle, getting hit with an attack, or using PSI Healing Beta. Certain types of Body Armor can block this through Flash (though you might still get it through other forms of attacks). Paralysis: Causes you character to become unable to attack. Can be healed through PSI Healing Gamma. Certain types of Body Armor can either block it through Flash, or block it completely. Unconsciousness: The game's fancy way of saying YOU'RE DEAD! Can be healed through PSI Healing Gamma. Equipping weapons and armor properly will prevent this ;) There are many other ailments, but these are the ones that are affected by equipment. ======================= 4. Special Note on Poo ======================= Poo is a very special kid: all those years as a prince have gone to his head and ego, meaning that he'll only benefit from equipment he likes. He only has 1 weapon and 3 pieces of armor (1 per group) that increase his offense and defense stats; making him wear anything else will actually decrease these stats! However, there is a strategy to this. While his offense and defense go down, any other stat bonus is retained! Giving him a certain pendant would decrease his defense, but protect him from an element and give him a speed bonus too! Though it's usually recommended that Poo wears what he's comfortable with, there are times where giving him another piece of equipment would be more helpful to the situation. =========== 5. Weapons =========== Your main form of attack! Equipping weapons increase your offense; allowing you to deal more damage. Some weapons have a guts bonus too! Each weapon has a certain accuracy; usually 15/16 (aka, there is a 1/16 chance that the character will miss). Sometimes it varies though; so I'll make a note of it in the Notes section if it does. ------------------- 5a. Ness's Weapons ------------------- Ness is probably one of the strongest fighters in the game! While his offensive PSI is powerful, he mostly uses support and healing PSI. Thus, he'll rely on his bat most of the time for attacking enemies. ............................................................................... Cracked Bat Offense: +4 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Found in Tracy's room at the beginning of the game. Also sold at Onett's Drugstore for $18. Notes: Good starter weapon, especially since it's free >_> ............................................................................... Tee ball bat Offense: +8 Guts: 0 Accuracy:15/16 Location: Sold at the Onett Drugstore and the Twoson Department Store for $48. Notes: Definitely recommended over the Yo-yo due to its superior accuracy and offensive capabilities. ............................................................................... Sand lot bat Offense: +15 Guts: 0 Accuracy 15/16 Location: Sold at the Happy Happy Village Drugstore and the Fourside Department Store for $98. Notes: Nice offensive boost for a pretty inexpensive price. ............................................................................... Minor League Bat Offense: +26 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Threed Drugstore and the Fourside Department Store for $399. Notes: Nice offensive boost for a more expensive price >_> Recommend buying since the zombies are tough. ............................................................................... Mr. Baseball Bat Offense: +38 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Dusty Dunes Drugstore and the Fourside Department Store for $498. Notes: Recommend buying since you won't be able to upgrade for a while. ............................................................................... T-rex's bat Offense: +48 Guts: 0 Accuracy 15/16 Location: Sold at the Winters Drugstore for $698 Notes: Obviously out of your financial league when you're playing as Jeff. It's a good buy after you learn teleport, but only if you're proficient at turning in tight spaces when using PSI teleport. ............................................................................... Big league bat Offense: +54 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Summers Gift Shop for $3080. Also, sold by one of the merchants outside of Hassan's Shop in Scaraba for $1380. Notes: Obviously wait until you get to Scaraba before you buy this. It gives a nice boost, especially if you didn't pick up the T-rex bat in Winters. Also, the bat sold in Summers and the bat sold in Scaraba are actually different! The stats are the same, but they give slightly different descriptions. ............................................................................... Hall of fame bat Offense: +62 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Traded at the Tenda Village Trade Post for 7 Horns of life. Notes: Unless you have a lot of extra money to burn, this bat is probably not worth it, especially since you can buy a better bat in about a half hour >_> ............................................................................... Ultimate Bat Offense: +68 Guts: 0 Accuracy 15/16 Location: Sold at the Lost Underworld Store for $2298. Notes: It's less expensive than the Hall of fame bat and gives a better offensive boost >_> I recommend buying it to help you through the Fire Spring; even though you're going to get a better bat shortly. ............................................................................... Magicant bat Offense: +80 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Found in Magicant. Notes: Very nice upgrade, especially since it's free. ............................................................................... Legendary bat Offense: +110 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Found in the Cave of the Past Notes: REALLY nice upgrade, especially since it's free. Too bad you barely get to use it >_> ............................................................................... Gutsy bat Offense: +100 Guts: +127 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: 1/128 drop from the Bionic Kraken found outside of Giygas's lair. Notes: Best bat in the game! The slight offense decrease is well worth the massive increase in guts. Though I'm strongly against trying to obtain it. The enemy is very rare, is found at the 2nd to last screen in the game, has a pitiful drop rate for it, and you won't really be able to utilize the weapon once you get it. ............................................................................... Casey bat Offense: +125 Guts: 0 Accuracy 4/16 Location: Dropped by Master Barf in Deep Darkness. Notes: While it gives a really big boost in offense, its accuracy is very poor. I don't recommend using it for battle. ............................................................................... -------------------- 5b. Paula's Weapons -------------------- Paula is the weakest physical fighter in the game. She relys more on PSI to deal damage than her frying pan. Most of the time you won't be using her pans, but in situations where you either out of or conserving PP, it can be helpful. ............................................................................... Fry pan Offense: +10 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Happy Happy Village Drugstore and Twoson Department Store for $56. Notes: Nice starter weapon at a cheap price. Though Paula is better at using PSI than using this weapon. ............................................................................... Thick fry pan Offense: +20 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Threed Drugstore and Dusty Dunes Drugstore for $198. Notes: Worth upgrading due to its cheap price. ............................................................................... Deluxe fry pan Offense: +30 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Dusty Dunes Drugstore and the Fourside Department Store for $598. Notes: Worth it to help with the desert segment, especially the Mine. ............................................................................... Chef's fry pan Offense: +40 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Fourside Department Store and Summers Gift Shop for $1198 Notes: Kinda expensive for a relatively small offense increase. If you have the extra money, go for it. ............................................................................... Non-stick frypan Offense: +50 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Winters Drugstore for $1490. Notes: Obviously out of your financial league when you're playing as Jeff. It's only slightly more expensive than the Chef's fry pan and you can buy it at about the same time as it too! You can get it after you learn PSI teleport, but only if you're proficient at turning in tight spaces when using PSI teleport. If you can, I recommend getting this instead of the Chef's fry pan. ............................................................................... French fry pan Offense: +60 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold by the roaming merchant after the pyramid segment for $1790. Notes: If you have the money, I suggest buying it. Make sure you bring enough money in the pyramid, or else you'll have to go to the dungeon man for an ATM. ............................................................................... Holy fry pan Offense: +80 Guts: +10 Accuracy: 15/16 Location: Sold at the Lost Underworld Store for $3480. Notes: It has the best offensive boost for Paula, as well as a guts bonus! I definitely recommend buying it if you can't get the Magic fry pan. ............................................................................... Magic fry pan Offense: +50 Guts: +100 Accuracy: 12/16 Location: 1/128 drop from the Chomposaur found in the Lost Underworld. Notes: While the offense takes a dive, and accuracy is hindered, the guts take a huge boost! I prefer the magic fry pan to the holy fry pan since Paula doesn't attack that often and the extra guts will help her survive mortal damage. ............................................................................... ------------------- 5c. Jeff's Weapons ------------------- Jeff is the genius of the group. Because he doesn't use PSI, he relies on his gun and gadgets to help him defeat enemies. Jeff has perfect accuracy when shooting, so he never misses (unless he's crying or the enemy dodged >_>) Most of the time you'll be going to an Arms Dealer located outside of stores to buy crack co...I mean weapons >_> One of Jeff's special abilities is fixing broken weapons. Simply reaching the IQ requirement and sleeping at an inn enough times with the item will have Jeff stay up all night to repair it. A great place to repair items is by the Mine in Dusty Dunes Desert. Resting is free and you can try again very easily as soon as you wake up. The chances of Jeff fixing an item varies. The following information explains how the mechanics work. All credit goes to "http://starmen.net" "* Your very first attempt to fix an item in the game has a 100% chance of success. * If your last attempt had a 100% chance, the next fix will have a 25% chance of success. * If a 25% chance of success succeeds, your next fix will have a 100% chance of success. * If a 25% chance of success fails, your next fix will have a 25% chance of success. Note that the ruler and protractor have absolutely no bearing on your chances of fixing an item." I tested out this information personally and it appears to be correct. ............................................................................... Pop gun Offense: +16 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Location: Found in the lockers in Snow Wood Boarding School. Note: Nice starter weapon, especially since it's free! ............................................................................... Stun gun Offense: +24 Guts: 0 Accuracy 16/16 Location: Found at Brick Road at the end of Winters. Notes: It's good, since it's free >_> ............................................................................... Toy air gun Offense: +32 Guts: 0 Accuracy 16/16 Location: Sold by the arms dealer in Threed for $215. Notes: While it's a nice upgrade, you should have enough IQ to fix the superior Magnum air gun by now, so I'd say pass on this one. ............................................................................... Magnum air gun Offense: +36 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Crafted from: Broken air gun (12 IQ Required) Location: Found in the lockers at the Snow Wood Boarding School. Notes: It's a nice weapon and you should be able to fix it by the time you return to Threed. Too bad you can't throw it away or sell it when it becomes obsolete :( ............................................................................... Zip Gun Offense: +40 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Location: Sold by the arms dealer in Dusty Dunes for $425. Notes: Meh, it's not much of an upgrade from the Magnum air gun. Plus you'll probably be close to fixing the laser gun by now. If you have the extra cash, go for it. ............................................................................... Laser gun Offense: +48 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Crafted from: Broken laser (24 IQ Required) Location: Found in Belch's Factory Notes: Nice upgrade up from the Zip gun. You should be able to fix this by the time you get to Dusty Dunes or Fourside. ............................................................................... Hyper Beam Offense: +58 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Location: Sold by the arms dealer in Fourside for $850. Notes: No, not the pokemon move (though some of the people who made this game went on to make Pokemon >_>) I recommend buying it since Moonside can be rough, and Jeff will have to pick up the slack in Paula's absence. ............................................................................... Double Beam Offense: +66 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Crafted from: Broken Gadget (34 IQ Required) Location: Sold at the Fourside Alley Junk Shop for $109. Notes: Apparently, it takes less IQ to fix the superior Spectrum beam >_> Though you won't be getting that weapon for a while. For the cheap price, I recommend buying it. You should be able to fix it by Summers. ............................................................................... Crusher beam Offense: +72 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Location: Sold by the roaming merchant after the pyramid segment for $1150. Notes: I don't recommend buying this since you probably have the broken cannon and the IQ to fix it. So give this weapon a pass. ............................................................................... Spectrum beam Offense: +78 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Crafted from: Broken cannon (32 IQ Required) Location: Sold by one of the merchants outside of Hassan's Shop in Scaraba for $218. Notes: If you can fix the Double beam, you can fix this; especially since it costs less IQ to fix. You should be able to fix it as soon as you buy it. ............................................................................... Death ray Offense: +90 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Location: Found in a garbage can in the Tenda Village. Notes: A very good upgrade, and it's free too! ............................................................................... Baddest beam Offense: +98 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Crafted from: Broken harmonica (55 IQ Required) Location: Found in the Stonehenge Base Notes: Unlike the name implies, this is actually the 3rd "baddest" beam. You should be able to fix this by the time you get to Tenda Village the 2nd time. ............................................................................... Moon beam gun Offense: +110 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Location: Found in the Fire Spring Notes: VERY good weapon. Gives a nice boost to offense and it's free too! ............................................................................... Gaia beam Offense: +125 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Crafted from: Broken antenna (65 IQ Required) Location: 1/128 drop from the Uncontrollable Sphere found in the Lumine Hall. Notes: While it's the best gun in the game, it has very demanding requirements to obtain it. Getting the part from the Uncontrollable Sphere will take a looooooooooooooooooooooong time, not to mention the IQ requirement is very high (65 IQ is usually obtained in the mid 70's!). So unless you feel up to it, I'd give this gun a pass. ............................................................................... ------------------ 5d. Poo's Weapons ------------------ Poo is a very picky kid >_> He only has one weapon and any other weapons will decrease his offense. Unfortunately, his only weapon is very hard to obtain. ............................................................................... Sword of kings Offense: +30 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 16/16 Location: 1/128 drop from the Starman Super found in the Stonehenge Base. Notes: Ah yes. The infamous Sword of kings. Many a gamer have felt the frustration of trying to obtain this glorious weapon. It's a 1/128 drop from an enemy that only appears for about 30 minutes in the game before never coming back. Personally, I feel that the Sword of kings isn't worth the effort. But if you really want to get it, be my guest. I recommend attacking lone Starmen Super to help increase the chance of getting their drop instead of another enemy's drop in a group of mixed enemies. Also, bash Starmen Super since they start out with PSI Shield Beta and will reflect any PSI attacks at them. My only other advice is to have patience. Rome didn't obtain the Sword of kings in a day >_> ............................................................................... ---------------------- 5e. Universal Weapons ---------------------- Comprised mostly of yo-yo's and slingshots. Everyone in the group can use these. Half the time, they have better stats than other weapons and are relatively cheap too! The downside is that their accuracy is lower than the party's specialized weapons. Never equip these on Poo since they give less accuracy than his fists and sword, and decrease his offense. While a Guts bonus could potentially get passed to him, none of these weapons give a Guts bonus. ............................................................................... Unarmed Offense: 0 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 15/16 Poo's Offense: 0 Location: You start with it >______> Notes: Good old fisticuffs! Poo will be using these a lot! I only put it here for completion sakes, and to show you the accuracy for using fists. ............................................................................... Yo-yo Offense: +6 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 13/16 Poo's Offense: -6 Location: Sold at the Onett Drugstore for $29. Notes: I don't recommend buying it since you can by the Tee ball bat for a little more money, and it has superior accuracy and offense. ............................................................................... Slingshot Offense: +12 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 13/16 Poo's Offense: -12 Location: Sold at the Twoson Department Store for $89. Notes: You can buy the superior Sand lot bat for just $7 more. For Paula, it's your call; though I prefer the fry pan to the slingshot. ............................................................................... Bionic Slingshot Offense: +32 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 13/16 Poo's Offense: -32 Location: Sold at the Saturn Valley Store for $449. Notes: Actually, this is a pretty decent weapon for Ness and Paula. The decrease in accuracy makes up for the increase in offense at this point. It's your call whether you want to use this over the bats and pans. ............................................................................... Trick yo-yo Offense: +46 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 13/16 Poo's Offense: -46 Location: Sold at the Fourside Department Store for $998. Notes: Might be useful for Ness and Paula, though I prefer the bats and pans to this yo-yo. It's your call. ............................................................................... Combat yo-yo Offense: +54 Guts: 0 Accuracy: 13/16 Poo's Offense: -54 Location: Sold by the arms dealer in Deep Darkness for $1148. Notes: Not worth it. All your weapons should be superior to the Combat yo-yo at this point. The only thing it's got going for it is it's relatively low price. I recommend not getting it. ............................................................................... ================ 6. Armor - Body ================ A very useful armor. It increases you defense and sometimes you speed. This is the only armor group to protect against element attacks and paralysis. --------------------------- 6a. Universal Armor - Body --------------------------- This is armor that everyone can wear! Most of the time you'll be finding these rather than buying them. While Poo's defense does decrease when you equip him with these, the speed boost and element protection is retained. So in certain situations, it might be useful to take a hit in defense to protect him from certain elements. ............................................................................... Travel charm Defense: 0 Speed: 0 Protects against: Paralysis (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Locations: Received by the Traveling Entertainer, found in the Peaceful Rest Valley, and sold at the Twoson Junk Stand and the Saturn Valley Store for $60. Notes: Meh, you'll find this for free at various places. Though it gives no defense, it does protect against the deadly paralysis attacks, though you won't be encountering that early in the game >_> ............................................................................... Great charm Defense: +1 Speed: +5 Protects against: Paraylsis (half) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in Lilliput Steps and sold at the Saturn Valley Store for $400. Notes: While it adds a bit of defense and speed, it cuts paralysis protection by half. I'd prefer it over the travel charm since you don't run into enemies who can paralyze very often. ............................................................................... Crystal charm Defense: +2 Speed: +15 Protects against: Paraylsis (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold by one of the merchants outside of Hassan's Shop in Scaraba for $600. Notes: Superior to the Great charm in terms of basically everything. Protection is back up to full, defense is increased slightly, and speed is boosted a lot. Though you get this by the time you receive all the element pendants, which I prefer over this. ............................................................................... Rabbit's foot Defense: +3 Speed: +40 Protection against: Paralysis (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Lumine Hall. Notes: Superior to the superior Crystal charm! It gives more defense and boosts speed dramatically! I would recommend using this on Jeff, due to his low speed but anyone will benefit greatly from this (except Poo of course >_>) ............................................................................... Flame pendant Defense: +15 Speed: 0 Protection against: Fire (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Monkey Caves and sold at the Saturn Valley Store at the end for $3000. Notes: This is a pretty good pendant. Gives a nice defense boost and negates fire attacks. A trick I like to use with it is to equip this and the Franklin badge on Poo and fight Kraken. He will basically be invincible. And when the other party members are KO'd, he'll get 4 times more experience! It's useful for helping him get up to speed in terms of levels. ............................................................................... Rain Pendant Defense: +15 Speed: 0 Protects against: Freeze (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the pyramid and sold at the Saturn Valley Store at the end for $3000. Notes: Just like the Fire pendant except it negates freeze attacks instead of fire attacks. Very useful since freeze usually causes more damage than fire. ............................................................................... Night Pendant Defense: +15 Speed: 0 Protects against: Flash (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in Moonside and sold at the Saturn Valley Store at the end for $3000. Notes: It can potentially negate crying, strangeness, numbness, and even instant death! However, not a lot of enemies use flash that often. Still a useful item to hold on to. ............................................................................... Earth pendant Defense: +16 Speed: 0 Protects against: Fire (half), Freeze (half), and Flash (half) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold at the Magicant Store for $4000. Notes: The jack of all trades pendant! It's like the fire, rain, and night pendant got fused together, then cut in half! It reduces fire, freeze, and flash by half (the 3 F's >_>). ............................................................................... Sea pendant Defense: +20 Speed: 0 Protects against: Fire (full), Freeze (full), Flash (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Lost Underworld. Notes: The master of all trades pendant! It's like the fire, rain, and night pendant got fused together! It negates fire, freeze, and flash! ............................................................................... Star pendant Defense: +30 Speed: 0 Protects against: Paralysis (full), Fire (full), Freeze (full) and Flash (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: 1/128 drop by the Major Psychic Psycho found in the Fire Spring. Notes: The ultimate pendant! It's the Sea pendant plus the Travel charm! Though, it's very difficult to obtain one, let alone three! I suggest using the Sea pendant as a nice substitute, but if you get your hands on one of these; it's awesome! ............................................................................... ----------------------- 6b. Poo's Armor - Body ----------------------- Poo only has one piece of body armor >_> While I suggest to wear it most of the time, don't forget that it doesn't protect against elements like the pendants do. Having him wear element pendants in the right situation can give you a real advantage. ............................................................................... Cloak of kings Defense: +20 Speed: +40 Protects against: None Location: Found in the Lost Underworld. Notes: Poo's only penalty-free body armor. It gives a modest defense boost and a very nice speed boost. Doesn't protect against anything though. ............................................................................... ================ 7. Armor - Arms ================ They increase your defense by protecting your arms! >_> Sometimes they have a Luck bonus and protect against sleep. --------------------------- 7a. Universal Armor - Arms --------------------------- There isn't much variation in these unlike body armor: you just keep upgrading them. Same rules apply to Poo; equipping these on him will decrease his defense, but retain the Luck boost and status protections. ............................................................................... Cheap bracelet Defense: +5 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the cave after Brick Road. Also sold at the Onett Drugstore and Twoson Department Store for $98. Notes: While a little on the expensive side at the beginning of the game, it should be within your grasp after defeating 3 or 4 sharks. ............................................................................... Copper bracelet Defense: +10 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold at the Twoson Junk Stand, Happy Happy Village Drugstore, and Threed Drugstore for $349. Notes: Kinda expensive too, but well worth the price. Selling chickens will help you buy them sooner. ............................................................................... Silver bracelet Defense: +15 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the underground tunnel in Threed. Also Sold at the Saturn Valley Store, Dusty Dunes Drugstore, and Fourside Department Store for $599 Notes: I recommend buying it if you have the money, it offers reasonable protection for the price. ............................................................................... Gold Bracelet Defense: +30 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold at the Fourside Department store and Summers Gift Store for $2799. Notes: The defense is really bumped up, but so is the price >_> I recommend buying it if it's in your financial boundries. ............................................................................... Platinum band Defense: +40 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Mine in Dusty Dunes Desert. Sold at the Summers Gift Shop for $6899. Also sold by one of the merchants outside of Hassan's Shop in Scaraba for $3899. Notes: Obviously don't buy it in Summers. Wait until you get to Scaraba, but even then, only buy one or so since you're going to be able to buy a better bracelet shortly. ............................................................................... Diamond band Defense: +50 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Pyramid. Sold at the Summers Gift Shop for $9998. Also sold by the Deep Darkness Businessman for $5198. Notes: Definitely wait until Deep Darkness before buying this. It's gives a fantastic boost in defense! I definitely recommend giving it to all the party members (sans Poo >_>). Make sure you have enough money on you in Deep Darkness, since withdrawing money there costs a big fee. ............................................................................... Pixie's bracelet Defense: +60 Luck: +10 Protects against: Sleep (half) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Stonehenge Base. Notes: Very useful armor. Gives superior defense, some luck, and protects against sleep. ............................................................................... Cherub's band Defense: +70 Luck: +20 Protects against: Sleep (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Fire Spring. Notes: Really useful armor! Nice defense, more luck, and protects fully against sleep! ............................................................................... Goddess band Defense: +80 Luck: +30 Protects against: Sleep (full) Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in Magicant. Notes: An upgraded Cherub's band! Gives more defense and luck! Best arm armor in the game! ............................................................................... ----------------------- 7b. Poo's Armor - Arms ----------------------- Poo's only penalty-free armor. Unlike with the body armor, I don't recommend equipping him with the bracelets, since his gives the most Luck and already has sleep protection. ............................................................................... Bracer of kings Defense: +30 Luck: +35 Protects against: Sleep (full) Location: Found in the Pink Cloud. Notes: While defense isn't good, luck is increased and sleep protection is implemented. Poo's best (and only >_>) arm armor! ............................................................................... ================= 8. Armor - Other ================= The mysterious "other" armor is made up of hats and coins. Obviously, they increase defense, but a lot of them come with a nice Luck bonus! None of them protect against any ailments though. ---------------------------- 8a. Universal Armor - Other ---------------------------- By either wearing these on your head or putting it in your pocket, you'll be protected from just about anything! Like the Arm Armor, there isn't a lot of variation in it; just upgrading it over and over. Same rules apply to Poo; he'll lose defense, but retain the Luck boost. ............................................................................... Baseball cap Defense: +5 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold at the Onett Drugstore, Twoson Department Store, and Fourside Department Store for $19. Also given to you by yourself in Magicant Notes: While it's a good buy at the beginning of the game, you can find the vastly superior Mr. Baseball cap for free. So I suggest not buying it. ............................................................................... Mr. Baseball cap Defense: +6 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found at the hidden tree house in Onett. Notes: It's superior to the Baseball cap sold at the store. So I would recommend getting this. You can get this by going west of the library and looking for a guy hanging out by a bunch of trees (he'll ask you if you want to guard the hideout). From him, go east into the trees; there should be trees east of you, and trees north of you. While moving into the east trees, go north and you should be on a hidden path to tree house. Once inside, talk to one of the kids in there and he'll give you the hat. ............................................................................... Holmes Hat Defense: +10 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the locker at Snow Wood Boarding School. Also sold at the Happy Happy Village Drugstore for $59. Notes: Nice freebie for Jeff. But you can find the Hard hat by the time Ness can buy this. So I would refrain from buying it. ............................................................................... Hard Hat Defense: +15 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Peaceful Rest Valley. Also sold in the Threed Drugstore for $298. Notes: The best hat in the game, but that's not saying much >_> Good buy for Jeff after he joins the party. ............................................................................... Coin of slumber Defense: +30 Luck: +10 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Milky Well. Also sold at the Dusty Dunes Drugstore and Fourside Department Store for $1500. Notes: Nice upgrade from the hats, also not so nice upgrade in the price >_> You shouldn't have to buy it though, since you get a freebie, and a better coin at the same place. ............................................................................... Coin of Defense Defense: +40 Luck: +13 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in the Mine in Dusty Dunes Desert. Also sold in the Fourside Department Store and Toto Store for $2000. Notes: Nice upgrade in every stat. If you can afford it, buy them for the person without the Mr. Saturn coin. ............................................................................... Coin of silence Defense: +45 Luck: +16 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold at the Winters Drugstore for $2500. Notes: It's up to you whether you go out of your way to get this. Make sure you can turn while teleporting proficiently. ............................................................................... Mr. Saturn coin Defense: +47 Luck: +18 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Received from one of the Mr. Saturns after defeating Master Belch. Notes: A really nice item you get fairly early in the game. You'll definitely be keeping this on you for a while. I suggest putting it on someone besides Paula since she has access to her exclusive ribbons. ............................................................................... Lucky coin Defense: +50 Luck: +20 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold at the Summers Gift Shop for $6000. Notes: Wait until Deep Darkness, where you can buy its equivalent. ............................................................................... Charm Coin Defense: +50 Luck: +20 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold by the Deep Darkness Businessman for $3000 Notes: Exactly the same as the Lucky coin, but at a cheaper price. It should replace any other coins you have equipped on your party members. ............................................................................... Talisman coin Defense: +60 Luck: +25 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Traded at the Tenda Village Trade Post for 6 Horns of life. Notes: Very expensive. Especially since you can buy a better one at a cheaper price in about a half hour >_> ............................................................................... Shiny coin Defense: +70 Luck: +30 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Sold at the Lost Underworld Store for $4000. Notes: It's cheaper than the Talisman coin and more powerful too >_> I recommend buying this for anyone who doesn't have a ribbon or the Souvenir coin or whose name is Poo. ............................................................................... Souvenir coin Defense: +80 Luck: +35 Protects against: None Poo's Defense: -40 Location: Found in Deep Darkness. Notes: The best coin there is! Gives superior defense and luck! I suggest equipping it on Jeff since Luck determines his gadget's accuracy. ............................................................................... -------------------------- 8b. Paula's Armor - Other -------------------------- Paula gets her own line of other armor! I prefer these over the coins since they are vastly cheaper and are usually more powerful. ............................................................................... Ribbon Defense: +20 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Location: Sold at the Happy Happy Village Drugstore and Twoson Department Store for $89. Notes: Definitely recommend buying it; it's better than the Hard hat. It'll help protect Paula while she levels up. ............................................................................... Red ribbon Defense: +25 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Location: Sold at the Saturn Valley Store and Fourside Department Store for $179. Notes: Great defense at a really cheap price! Buy it! ............................................................................... Defense ribbon Defense: +40 Luck: +15 Protects against: None Location: Sold at the Fourside Department Store for $389. Notes: Still holds the trend of good defense at good prices. Buy it! ............................................................................... Talisman ribbon Defense: +60 Luck: +25 Protects against: None Location: Found inside Dungeon Man. Notes: Very good item, especially since it cost $0 >_> ............................................................................... Saturn ribbon Defense: +90 Luck: +40 Protects against: None Location: Found in the Stonehenge Base. Notes: One of Paula's best ribbons! Give the highest Luck boost too! I prefer this over the Goddess ribbon due to its superior Luck boost and ease of acquiring. ............................................................................... Goddess ribbon Defense: +110 Luck: 0 Protects against: None Location: 1/128 drop from Ghost of Starman found in Onett after take over and Cave of the Past. Notes: The other best ribbon! While defense gets a nice boost, the luck boost goes down to 0 :( It's your call whether you use the Saturn ribbon or Goddess ribbon, though getting the Goddess ribbon is a very tough endeavor. ............................................................................... ------------------------ 8c. Poo's Armor - Other ------------------------ Like all equipment, Poo only has one Other Armor that doesn't decrease his defense. It gives the 2nd best Luck he can obtain and a nice defense, so I don't recommend equipping him with anything else. ............................................................................... Diadem of kings Defense: +20 Luck: +30 Protects against: None Location: Found in Lumine Hall. Notes: Poo's best (and only >_>) other armor! Gives a very nice Luck boost too! For those who are curious, a diadem is a special type of crown that members of monarchies wear. It typically an ornamental headband; it looks sorta like those tiaras the Miss America's wear. I'll leave that to your imagination in regards to Poo >______> ............................................................................... ============================ 9. Optimal Equipment Setups ============================ I made two lists detailing the optimal equipment for everyone: one list has 1/128 items, the other doesn't. Please note that this is my opinion and you should obviously use what you think is best. With 1/128 items: Ness Weapon: Gutsy bat Body: Star Pendant Arms: Pixie's Bracelet Other: Shiny Coin Paula Weapon: Magic fry pan Body: Star Pendant (or Sea Pendant) Arms: Goddess band Other: Saturn ribbon (or Goddess Ribbon) Jeff Weapon: Gaia beam Body: Star Pendant (or Rabbit's foot) Arms: Cherub's band Other: Souvenir coin Poo Weapon: Sword of kings Body: Cloak of kings (or Star pendant or any other pendant when necessary) Arms: Bracer of kings Other: Diadem of kings I went under the assumption that you won't have 4 star pendants and offered alternatives. I gave Ness the lone star pendant since he's the main healer and protecting him from ailments will help your party immensely. I gave him the weakest arms and other armor too since he is really powerful from the Magicant boost and won't need to be over the top >_> For Paula, I gave her the best arms armor since her HP is very low. I prefer the Saturn ribbon due to the Luck bonus, but that's my preference. I also gave her the sea pendant since she is very fragile, but she didn't get the best since she can't heal other party members. For Jeff, I gave him the Rabbit's foot as an alternative since he has a fairly low speed and increasing it would give him an advantage. I also gave him the middle arms armor and the best other armor since he is in need of a high defense and the extra luck will help him attack enemies with his gadgets For Poo, I gave him all his normal equipment, but with the option to give him pendants should an appropriate opportunity arise. Without 1/128 items: Ness Weapon: Legendary bat Body: Sea Pendant Arms: Pixie's bracelet Other: Shiny coin Paula Weapon: Holy fry pan Body: Rain pendant (or Earth pendant) Arms: Goddess band Other: Saturn ribbon Jeff Weapon: Moon beam gun Body: Rabbit's foot (or Night pendant) Arms: Cherub's band Other: Souvenir coin Poo Weapon: None Body: Cloak of kings (or any pendant when necessary) Arms: Bracer of kings Other: Diadem of kings Same rationale with this list. Ness should have the Sea pendant for healing. Paula should have the Rain pendant since freeze attacks do a lot of damage. If she starts crying or is numb from a flash, it won't hinder her too much, and fire attacks shouldn't do enough damage to KO her; hence why I prefered the Rain pendant. The Earth pendant is a nice choice for her too. For Jeff, I gave him the Rabbit's foot for speed and the Night pendant for back up, since shooting is his main form of attack and anything hindering it would be bad. ==================== 10.
