Double Dungeons(Turbografx-16) FAQ/Walkthrough version 1.0.0 copyright 2007 by Andrew Schultz schultz.andrew@sbcglobal.net Please do not reproduce for profit without my consent. You won't be getting much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and I just wanted to save a memory of an old game and the odd solutions any way I could. Please send me an email referring to me and this guide by name if you'd like to post it on your site. Thanks at the top to nirexine and ESPECIALLY ReyVGM for coming before me and creating some maps so 1) I got into the flow and 2a) I didn't have to spend HOURS on level 22 and 2b) thanks for permission to hack through his map, add monsters, etc. ================================ OUTLINE 1. WHAT SHOPS SELL WHAT 5. WALKTHROUGH 6. CHEATING 7. VERSIONS 8. CREDITS ================================ 1. INTRODUCTION Double Dungeons is Progress Quest without the irony. And without as many cool monster and item names, though there's some good Japlish. And with mandatory mindless button bashing. But it has its moments. You must fight through 22 mazes--the biggest one last--and build up your character's level, armor and weapons, then defeat a boss, whereupon you see one letter of the big long password to get to the 22nd level. Then, in the next maze, your stats are reduced back to level 1 and you get to start over. The game varies monster sets, treasures and what items you can buy, and some of the levels can be rather interesting as you plan the best way to avoid the tough monsters and improve quickly, but the last ones drag way too much. At least they do before you find the killer item, which seems like a total band-aid. This walkthrough assumes you have access to the GameFAQs maps, because text maps for this would just be horrible and would go outside the GameFAQs margins anyway for the levels where you'd really need them. Nirexine's are a great introduction. My maps for 6-22 should be posted on GameFAQs. 1-5 may be posted at another site. There's no really compact way to map the final few levels of the game, so you will have to deal with a bit of scrolling. This walkthrough also uses extensive notation to make the text bits shorter so you can focus on the strategy. 2L 2U 2R 2D means what it says, 2 left, 2 up, 2 right, 2 down. [D/L/R/U]* means move all the way D/L/R/U. [D/L/R/U]= means move that way to the next intersection. [D/L/R/U]- means explore the dead end that way and return. [D/L/R/U]> means explore the passage that starts that way but turns with no offshoots [D/L/R/U]*> means that there is a bend at the end of going straight, so follow it Also I will label some points A, B, C to say "get back to point A." 1-1. TURBOGRAFX VS WII CAVEAT I don't own a Wii. I don't plan on replaying the game for the Wii. So I am at a loss to tell you about save states, etc., or how to work on the Wii. However with Turbografx I found I could save a bunch of states at various different parts of a big map to write up the map as I went. But apparently the maps should be equivalent. I'm also not sure about controls, which can make a huge difference. 1-2. ROUGH GAME OUTLINE Each dungeon has a Unicorn Key you must find to unlock the door to the boss battle. Once you win the boss battle, you get one letter of the password for level 22. Each dungeon is a block-maze with inns, shops and monsters, some of which(the easier ones) regenerate after you kill them. Treasure chests are fixed but you can get random stuff from monsters. Dungeons 1-8 are classed as level 1 and are ~26x26 Dungeons 9-14 are classed as level 2 and are ~40x30 Dungeons 15-18 are classed as level 3 and are ~62x48 Dungeons 19-20 are classed as level 4 and are ~84x110 BUT 20 has a sizeable chunk out of it. Dungeon 21 is classified as level 5 and is ~115x115 BUT it has a sizeable UL chunk taken out Dungeon 22 is classified as level 6 and is 107x114 BUT it is actually designed more sanely than the other 21, as you go inward on concentric squares 1-3. THE MAPS My maps should be accurate, but let me know if I misplaced something. 2. CONTROLS Using the MagicEngine PCE emulator, down=move backwards if you can. "Something strange" appears if a monster is behind. up=move forward left/right=turn(note: if you do not face a monster it will not attack you.) D[button 1] = choose an action S[button 2] = select between selling in a shop, or bring up the menu of usable items in combat or outside(push button 1) space = scroll through items in the shop any button = go through combat quickly Going through combat quickly is not always an option at the higher levels. Then you need to choose [2] [1] [1] [1] [1] to get through the combat quickly when you have a special item that increases damage. Note you cannot hold a button down(boo) and because of this the button bashing can be excruciating, and for your own sanity I am trying to get you through as quickly as possible. 3. GENERAL STRATEGIES For the first eight dungeons, 0. don't get killed. Know who the weak enemies are. Avoid the very-strong ones. If you continually do 1 damage, back up and trash some slimes. 1. build up to L3 beating up slimes 1a. find a corridor of enemies to beat for exp/$ 2. locate the shop and get the long sword 2a. find another corridor of enemies to beat for exp/$, especially ones hiding treasure 3. get the wooden armor 3a. see 2a if necessary 3b. nip in for a speed ring if it is in a treasure chest, and you might as well use a defender too if you can find it 3c. locate treasure chests to get free weapon/armor upgrades or even lots of gold to buy them. 4. get the Unicorn Key(or do this at #2) 5. get to level 12 (see 3a) 6. kill off the boss behind the Unicorn Key door It's best to get to level 12 just as you get to meet the boss for the first bit. If the shop is nearby or along the way, you can buy Refresh for 300 and maybe tackle the boss at level 11. The level number moves up as the dungeons get bigger, when you may have to find some special treasure or a second shop that offers even better items. Inns are generally useless until the later levels when you don't recharge your hit points after gaining a level. You don't have much else to spend money on, except multiple speed rings maybe. Attack is more useful than defense in this game, so don't obsess over buying the best armor. The best attacking item, however, is worth saving up for as frequently you'll get a couple levels as you fight enemies to get the gold. It's less dull than just wandering to pick up experience and hope you have enough. The game's not too bad about balancing this. In general if you take a turn and suddenly monsters are way too tough you may want to put that off 'til later. The maps are actually rather conveniently compartmentalized at later levels. Monsters reappear after a certain amount of time and not a certain amount of moves, so don't go whizzing through a dungeon just to get moves in. Leave the computer for half a minute and come back. But on that note, if you do so using MagicEngine, remember to hit F1-F5 to reload the time on your save state. Sell all healing items worse than refresh. But be careful as the sell-list is organized randomly, and you may sell your weapon. On later levels, you may not have the time to sell an item before you get back to a store, and you may want to sell really cheap heal items, as it is very possible to find defenders and speed rings, which you can use or sell depending on what you need. Also, squeeeze in a refresh when you find the best weapon you can buy-- once you leave the armory there should be a few considerably stronger enemies you can crush. Also, once you clear out one area, go to another area and clear it out and when you return, all the monsters that can be recycled probably will be. Later on if you can afford/find an Earth Shaker, Energy Burst, Crystal Orb or Death Thunder--or afford enough to buy one--do so. They have unlimited uses and boost your stats amazingly. On later levels keep a slot open for extra defenders and speed rings. They seem to have a cumulative effect. Make sure you either have spare refreshes or know where an inn is once you are above level 20. You don't have to be 'til dungeon 18. But after level 20 you don't get the hit points reset to near maximum on gaining a level, which affects what you can do. 4. LISTS OF STATS 4-1. YOUR LEVELS You can get up to level 60 in this game. The hit points gained per level increase, and the experience needed for the next level increases, until it is easier just to get on with the boss fight. The experience is recorded as a WORD so when you get to 65535, the max value, it freezes there and you can't go any higher. The values don't seem to follow any formula though you lose 1 additional MaxHP approximately every other level, and the dufferebce between levels increases roughly linearly. Lvl#|MaxHP| ToNext| Diff ----+-----+-------+----- 1 | 24 | 8 | 8 2 | 57 | 26 | 18 3 | 89 | 62 | 36 4 | 121 | 119 | 57 5 | 152 | 196 | 77 6 | 183 | 296 | 100 7 | 213 | 418 | 122 8 | 243 | 565 | 147 9 | 272 | 736 | 171 10 | 301 | 935 | 199 11 | 329 | 1161 | 226 12 | 357 | 1415 | 254 13 | 384 | 1699 | 284 14 | 410 | 2014 | 315 15 | 436 | 2360 | 346 16 | 461 | 2739 | 379 17 | 486 | 3153 | 414 18 | 510 | 3610 | 457 19 | 534 | 4085 | 475 20 | 557 | 4607 | 522 21 | 579 | 5167 | 560 22 | 601 | 5766 | 599 23 | 622 | 6406 | 640 24 | 643 | 7088 | 688 25 | 663 | 7812 | 724 26 | 683 | 8579 | 767 27 | 702 | 9392 | 813 28 | 721 | 10250 | 858 29 | 739 | 11155 | 905 30 | 757 | 12109 | 954 31 | 774 | 13111 | 1002 32 | 790 | 14164 | 1053 33 | 806 | 15268 | 1104 34 | 821 | 16424 | 1156 35 | 836 | 17634 | 1210 36 | 850 | 18899 | 1265 37 | 864 | 20219 | 1320 38 | 877 | 21596 | 1377 39 | 889 | 23030 | 1434 40 | 901 | 24524 | 1494 41 | 912 | 26077 | 1553 42 | 923 | 27692 | 1615 43 | 934 | 29368 | 1676 44 | 943 | 31108 | 1740 45 | 952 | 32912 | 1804 46 | 961 | 34782 | 1870 47 | 969 | 36718 | 1936 48 | 977 | 38722 | 2004 49 | 984 | 40794 | 2072 50 | 990 | 42936 | 2142 51 | 996 | 45148 | 2212 52 | 1001| 47433 | 2285 53 | 1006| 49791 | 2358 54 | 1010| 52222 | 2431 55 | 1014| 54729 | 2507 56 | 1017| 57312 | 2583 57 | 1019| 59973 | 2661 58 | 1021| 62711 | 2738 59 | 1022| 65534 | 2823 60 | 1024| 65535 | 1 4-2. MONSTER LIST Note here a=10 ... m=22 in the "found" column. Also note that some monsters seem to be listed twice. They look identical, but my maps tell them apart, and also you'll probably find you can't kick a weak enemy's butt so easily, except in the case of invisible men. The boss monsters may appear in regular combat in later levels, in which case you get no experience for them. Some other enemies give no experience, just because the game likes to pull that sort of nonsense. ATTACK AND DEFENSE Here is how much an item gives you for attack and defense: Use speed ring = +4 attack Use defender = +4 defense Increase level = ~ +2/+3 attack, +1 defense 4-4. WHAT SHOPS SELL WHAT There are eight different shop types and overall you don't want to pay too much attention to buying armor. You'll probably never get the money for Earth Shaker/Energy Boost until you get the later dungeons, which have something like that you can find, anyway. Type 1: Weapons: Short Sword, Short Spear, Long sword(20,80,200) Armor: Canvas, Leather, Wooden(60,100,200) Misc: Heal, Refresh Type 2: Weapons: Battle pick, long spear, broad sword(120,300,400) Armor: Wooden, lead, stone(200,300,400) Misc: Heal, Refresh Type 3: Weapons: Battle Axe, Zagnal, Strong Sword(500,700,1200) Armor: Copper, Steel, Silwer(600,800,1000) Misc: Heal, Earth Shaker(300/6k) Type 4: Weapons: Pilum, Gradius, Strong Sword(3-4-7k) Armor: Golden, Ice, Diamond(12-14-16k) <-this is a bug I think Misc: Refresh, Energy Burst(300/12k) Type 5: Weapons: Viking Axe, Jared, Giant Scythe(1600-5k-9k) Armor: Ice, Diamond, King(1400-1600-3200) Misc: Refresh, Speed Ring Type 6: Weapons: Light Flail, Heavy Flail, Tomahawk(900/2400/6k) Armor: ghost, thief, ancient(5600, 7800, 9200) Misc: Refresh, Defender Type 7: Weapons: Heavy flail, javeliin, laser blade(2400, 8k, 12k) Armor: flaming, angel, earth(12k, 15k, 20k) Misc: Speed Ring, Defender Type 8: Weapons: Flame Sword, Laser Blade, Dragon Slayer(7k/12k/15k) Armor: Thief Armor, Angel Armor, Earth Armor (7800/15k/20k) Misc: Refresh, Death Thunder(300, 24k) Also a bug: you can only sell Death Thunder for 1200 instead of 12K(half price.) 5. WALKTHROUGH 5-1. DUNGEON 1 "The king dispatched the warrior to the dungeon in order to find the kingdom's missing treasure." Monsters: Green Slime Killer Bee Sorcerer Giant Leech Skeleton Hawk Marsh Snake Boss: Mime Start off by killing four green slimes to get level 2. There are 4 slimes just around, 3E 2S 4W 4U 2R and now you can backtrack or go 2U 3R. That is a safe way to get to level 2. For level 3, you can risk fighting a killer bee or two. But the slimes should replenish easily enough. Again you only need 9 slimes and once you get them your hit points jump to 57. You should have at least 13 gold, too, so from the slime in the dead end, you can actually go get the refresh potion. If you want to get the short sword first for a bit of extra damage, go 3L 2D 2L 4D 3R 2D 3R 2D 4L 2D 2L 2D (this death spider's tough) 2D 4R(another slime) 4U and get a short sword. Use it to work your way up, fighting more killer bees and skeletons. Avoid the Marsh Snakes as they are the tough enemies. However, you should be able to hack along the top as follows from the dead end, pausing to beat up slimes if hit points get low. L* U* 2R D* 2R 2U R* U* R* D* R* D* and hit d?? twice to get the refresh. If you are level 4 or so you can take out the sorcerer too for the Unicorn Key. Now retreat and go to the shop(i.e. get the short sword above) and you will have enough money for a long sword or wooden armor. I find armor doesn't help much against monsters you can't damage anyway, but it can go either way. Levels are probably most important but by now you should be able to whip some of the tougher monsters. Once you've beaten the sorcerer, you could do worse than cycle back and forth til he pumps you up to level 9. But you can also go back to the shop to get some armor and then beat up the hawk to the right. That is a tougher fight and closer to what you ultimately want to do. Once you are ready you can go along the top of the map and down the dead ends to fight the marsh snakes. Then beat the slime at the 4-way crossroads and go down. Another marsh snake, but there are easy enemies behind that. D* 2L and now d* are some easy monsters and the inn(for healing, but if you hang around in the right places that is irrelevant as your level boost does the job of the inns) and 2U 3L 4D 2L leads to a crossroad--definitely 2U L* D* to make sure you can beat up the hawk, retreat and 3L 2D 3R 6D(marsh snake) 2U 2L U and now D* 4R 5U D* 4L 5U etc., just beating up monsters til you get to level 12. You may be able to beat the boss at level 11 with a refresh potion, but level 12 should do it with 40% of hit points to spare. "See my power!" "An imprisoned mime had cast a spell. With the warrior's hard work the treasure is now returned to the king." 5-2. DUNGEON 2 "The kingdom has been encroached upon by supernatural powers. The warrior goes to the dungeon." Monsters: Green Slime Killer Bee Goblin Killer Ant King Spider Iron Head Death Crow Guarder Boss: Dark Elf The same general idea as before but this one really is a bit easier of a map to work through, even though it is a bit denser too. R* and now go counterclockwise and you will keep running into slimes and killer bees you can dispose of at will. The shop is U= L- of the DR and you can probably just circle around the outer bit until you get good enough for $200. Get the sword first, then the armor with your next $200. On level 5 you can go U= r- to get past the goblin to get the unicorn key. Now the best place to go back and forth may be the UR, L= and D*. U* D* and wipe out the killer and and iron head. That should be pretty fun. You'll get good gold and experience. Once that is done, try fighting the death crow U* L= D* L>. Death crows give good gold but cause damage. Once up to level 9 you can take your chances with the guardians. U== R*> D* and R- you have a guardian in the dead end. L> and R- is one guardian and D* is another. D> of there is the boss but you are not ready yet. You want to make sure you have them cleared for the next bit. Unfortunately the iron head above doesn't seem to regenerate so you may want to scour the corridor with the killer and and spider(part of the R> above) or maybe look for the other iron head. Since you just want experience, you can always circle around the outside and pick up some while waiting for other monsters to recharge, but it is awkward to get to the inner bit. Sadly, guarders don't regenerate, so you just have to muck about further away than you might like. See the last sentence above for defeating the boss. You can take him at level 12. Dark Elf: "Fell my evil power." "The supernatural power was the act of the dark elf. Now peace returns to the kingdom." 5-3. LEVEL 3 "Warrior! Help a young girl who has been caught by the demons in the dungeon." Red slimes are the same as green slimes, so don't worry about that. Here D> gets you to level 2 before you know it. Then there is a red slime ahead. You can keep running back and forth and be up to level 3 or 4 in no time. You can also go U* L> of the red slime to what I call green slime 1. The shop is guarded by some slightly tougher customers than before. But you can still beat up the sorcerer R> of the green slime 1. Then once you are at level 4, you can take out the skeletons D L U and along that passage. You can break through to get the side treasure(bread) pretty easily. Bread itself isn't too valuable, but there aren't that many other places to go to rack up experience. It's a way to take out a new space and wait for the old to recharge. Once you are at level 6 you should start to return. At level 7 I was barely able to beat up the mummy N of the sorcerer. That allows you passage to the store. You'll probably have ~300 gold now, so get the sword and now clear out some more enemies. At level 8, with the sword and wooden armor, you can try the pumpkinhead and then the mummy N of the shop. Behind him is the unicorn key. Then keep working N of green slime 1 and go down the west corridor at level 9. You can also clear out the SE as there is a killer wolf there(only appears 1x, but it is a bargain) in the meantime. Once you get to level 11, you can buy a refresh potion and go U= W> S> W> from green slime 1 and you can fight the snowman, who says, confusingly, "Bacad?" You will need to use the refresh, but you can win. Green Slime Red Slime Death Spider Sorcerer Skeleton Mummy Pumpkinhead Killer Wolf "BACAD??" Boss: Snowman "A snowman had kidnapped her. The warrior felt very sorry for her and defeatea the snowman." (sic) 5-4. DUNGEON 4 "Rumors of a vampire are spreading througout the kingdom. The king summons the warrior." E> and you can start beating up red slimes. E= E= gets you to level 2. Avoid blue slimes for now, so just L= and any way from the intersection is more red slime. You may have to use some apples to heal and not lose gold. At level 3, E* E> and the killer bees and blue slimes in the winding corridor are very beatable. The shop is at the end of the hall. But at level 3 you can beat one goblin and maybe two. Problem is, there are three, and they recharge. If you just bulk up to level 4 and then bust out, you can get past the three goblins, but you won't have quite the weapon you want. So keep ambulating until you are at 200 gold. Then go in for the real kill. At level 5 the goblins become easy, especially with the longsword. Now you can continue going back and forth to pick up the wooden armor, and at this point you should be around level 8. Move around some more and get to level 11. Once you are, go to the shop and get a couple refresh potions. From the shop, N> N> S> E> and you are on the east edge. S* W< S< and you will be along the bottom row. Sweep by the poison frogs and get the gold along the west side in the niches along with the unicorn key. Then when you are level 12 or so you can go east and tackle the imp which is N=E> from the DL corner. E* N* E> leads to a winding road and you will want to get to level 13 before taking out the gargoyle W= S*, so that you have the most hit points. You may need a refresh, but it shouldn't be too hard. Gargoyle: "Die!" "Everything seemed to be the act of a gargoyle. After his death the rumork died out." (sic) 5-5. DUNGEON 5 "Warrior! Zap the black magician hiding in the dungeons." This one is actually very easy due in large part to the Invisible Men. The sorcerers are pretty easy too. They give lots of experience and are easy to beat, and they're not tough to find either. Then necromancers work well at higher levels, because you can kill them quickly, but below level 8 they are very tough. Even the boss is easy. And to top it all off, if you know how to get to some treasure, you get enough money for supplies very quickly. Try to avoid ogres when possible, though you need to fight two at the end. E= E= 2N for level 2. You should be able to beat the invisible man at level 2--2S E* for that and now there should be a blue slime near the bottom to get you to level 3. From the start E= N= W> N* E= 2E and attack up for another invisible man, and 2W S* should beat the death spider and get you to level 4 and get the Unicorn Key behind. If not you can patrol the bottom for blue slimes. From the Unicorn Key N= E* S= E= S> S= E* N> E> N> N* W= N* E for the Star Jewel. Retreat to when you go back up and E> W= S* E* to get to the store. (Note: there are invisible men off to the side on the way worth trashing for experience and gold. See nirexine's map.) When you get to the shop, sell the Star Jewel for 200 and you should have enough gold for the long sword and wooden armor. Around level 9 you can beat the ogres and level 10 you can clear them out easily. They do not regenerate. You may have enough gold for 2 refreshes--at least enough for one--and once you do and are at level 11, fight the sorcerer. I've even beaten him on level 10. "Experience my evil!" says the sorcerer-boss. Oddly, here your damage done is based more on your level than your attack index. "Could someone else have been pulling the strings...? Everything remains a mystery." 5-6. DUNGEON 6 "The legend of the mighty warrior causes the warrior to go into the dungeon." Here the maze within a maze makes it tough to find where the green slimes are, but once you build up a few levels, it should be pretty easy to mow your enemies down. W= N to the tarantula and E= for a fight with a slime. N* E* for another slime fight and S= E= kills a blue slime. You can move around here for a bit and then when you get to level 4 you can take out the killer ant that is a slightly weaker link than the iron head. Now it is actually not too bad to get to the unicorn key as the main thing guarding it is an Iron Head, which is good for experience, though you can funk out and take out the killer ant if you are not level 5. From the blue slime on top, W= N= W= W= S=(4) E> S> S= W* S*. Now get to level 5 and you can take out the iron head at the bottom(N= 4E 2D E= D> S to get to the shop) and you can continue to take out iron heads and blue slimes as necessary to build up the gold to get the long sword and wooden armor. You need to remember also that by level 7 you can take out tarantulas, and at level 8 you can zap mummies. They don't reappear, but the time you take to fight them can help iron heads etc. reappear. Once you are at level 11 and have a refresh, you can beat the Skeleton Masrer(yes, that is their typo.) "I'm not beaten!" "Who has exploted the legend of the mighty warrior? Who on earth would do such a thing?" 5-7. DUNGEON 7 "The legend of the mysterious blue knight leads the warrior to the dungeon. He will follow him!" With a grid in the center and many easy monsters floating around there, this level does not pose any special problems for getting around, but you have some tough monsters guarding the very side bits. To get to the grid, 3L 3D(already level 2) and W= S= and go west. There will always be blue slimes to take care of and you can just zigzag around. You can go down from the right side and right to get to some blue slimes. Now at level 5(6 to be sure,) you will want to go(from the DR corner) W> N= E= N= N= past the Queen Ant and you can then get the shield ring. You can sell this to get the weapons you ned at the shop. From the shop, S= W=(3) N= E=(3) and N for the unicorn key. Bread is in the next niche but it's not particularly valuable. Bash around the center 'til you are at level 8. You can probably take the guardians out and then you can take out the sylvan wolves at level 9--though they are quicker at level 10. "YOU WILL DIE NOT I." At level 11, you should only need 1 refresh potion to take out the Blue Knight. "The blue knight will rest in peace now. Farewell!" 5-8. DUNGEON 8 "Warrior! Help the magician reing controlled by magic." (sic) If you've gotten through the first seven levels, the rest should seem like an exercise from now. You start roughly in the center and you may want to be level 2 before meeting the death spider--E= 2S and face west to kill one slime to get there. You can also play very safe and get level 3 before attacking the death spider. There are two more on the way, so if you get low on hit points, you can even pump up to level 4 if you have to. You will need to get to level 5 for the next bit, but the more you can clear out, the more enemies you will clear as you run back and forth Once past the one-way(there's a falcon to the side but he is much too strong) you have a goblin to the right(unicorn key is above but the necromancer is too tough.) These guys are tough at L5 and easy at L4 and so you should just be able to run through around L5. Since gold ~= 3/4 experience by then, you should also soon be able to buy a long sword. You'll come back here later for the unicorn key. From the shop, N> N> and now W= N> and there are lots of goblins and sorcerers to beat up if you wander around. But the best place to go is to the UR--from where you stopped, 4N E*> and then W S* and you can get a refresh. Once you are up to level 7 you can start to head back to the start. You probably have the gold for wooden armor, so get it at the armor shop, along with another refresh if you can. You want to be at level 9 for the necromancer and so if you are a bit short you can maybe even go to the bottom and get the falcon. Once you get the unicorn key from the necromancer(N> W> N> from the shop) you will want to go back to the UR. Again you may have to swat a bunch of monsters around to get to level 11. S= W> W> E> S* W> and you will be close, but with some tough fights. Clear the necromancer and falcons out. They'll remain gone, so you want to beat up who you can until you get to the next level--then BAM, take out the boss. The witch is rather easy--at level 12 I cruised. Witch: "It is I who will win!" "Do not make an opening in your heart! The demon is aiming at it." 5-9. DUNGEON 9 "The warrior encountered a soaking man. What is in the dungeons?" The dungeon suddenly doubles in size and that creates some problems. You also have two types of shops, and a lot of pieces of this maze are disjointed, meaning you will have to backtrack. And sometimes monsters guard bottlenecks, so you have to go one way, retreat and come back later when you are powerful enough. But the same principles still hold. The special twist to this dungeon is that you can move around quickly and sneak into the third shop without buying anything from either of the first two, which are identical. Smack around on the left for a while. When you get to level 4, go down and get the Refresh behind the skeleton, then W= N> N= N= N= E= S= E*> E*> S= E*> E= E= to the first shop. If you don't have 400 gold yet, you can get it by going W N> W= S*> and you will find 300 gold. But actually, you might want to hold off on buying stuff--STILL! Now the path to shop 3 is N>* E= S* W> W> W= S* E= S* W= N> E. But don't go there immediately. Keep fighting until you get to 1200 gold. It's a bit tedious but doing so now saves effort later. If you want you can shortcut and get a slightly weaker weapon but that means leveling up one more later. Once you have the sword, you will want to get armor. The sword will allow you to kill monsters east and south of the third shop--hawks, zombies, giant flies and ghouls. You won't be ready to take on imps until level 11 or 12, but once you can, you get 110 exp/60 gold for each. There is 200 gold behind the far west imp. The tougher monsters don't regenerate here so you can methodically work your way through. There should be enough for silwer(sic) armor and the experience you get along the way will further prepare you for the kraken. Once you have the armor, go W N> E= N*> N= W> W>(marsh snake) W*(-1) S> W*(another marsh snake) S= E*> E= S= E> E= S* E> S= W= S= W= S= E*> til you are at a NES intersection. Go south and take out the troll and get the unicorn key. Then return, E N> E and if you can't beat the ogres, you can't take the kraken. I needed 2 refreshes with level 18 and the armor to get by this. It's very tough. You may want to beat up Iron Heads for a while 'til you get to level 20, and clear out everything by the shop if you can, as well as the tough fights in the DL. Boss: Kraken "I'll show you terror!" "Why is the sea demon there? Someting is strange!" (sic) 5-10. DUNGEON 10 "Defeat the demon guard dog! The warrior heads to the dungeon to fight." There aren't a lot of side paths but this level really winds around. Stay in the UL and don't go down the 8-high shaft until you are at level 3. There are plenty of enemies to fight. You will be doing quite a bit of desultory building up, and you can take a goblin or two at level 4 to make it quicker. Lots of killer bees here are your very best bet, though, and all slimes are blue, making things not too bad. Just clear one sub-area and the other will fill. Keep going until you can buy a long sword--although you may be able, on level 5, to go W N*> S= W> E> W> E*> E> W* and get 500 gold and just buy it that way. You also may want to get the refresh that is N E* N> W> N= N= N= E> of the 500 gold, for later use. Then it's on to the giant leeches to take out a few times. The sylvan wolves are the toughest to beat, off SW. You can beat up a few giant leeches 'til you get to level 10 or so and then you will want to attack the higher sylvan wolf. Once it is killed. E> E= N> and get the speed ring, then take out the other one. It guards an armory, and you may not have the money to buy anything good yet, but go E past the sorcerer and N> N> W> to take out some shamans, and try to clear out more of that area--or just go back south and then head N/W to take out mummies. Then take out the imps. Try to get to the UR(from the shield ring, E> E= E= N> E> N= E> N= W*> W>) and then you can beat up the invisible man for a while. Go back to buy the Strong Sword, as otherwise it is a long trek back. With some imps around you should build up experience and gold pretty quickly. Then do S all the way, then W and you can continue W(N= W*> to the edge, then S= E= N> S> S* E= E= E= N for the unicorn key, then S= E> N> N> E* N= E= S> S= S> for the boss.) But you can also build up by fighting tarantulas, mummies and imps and there are two invisible men, too, one in the DL and one E N* E= N* E= E= of it. Just run around the DL to pick up levels. "I'll show you hell!" Cerberus is rather tough if you've breezed through the level, so you may want to scour the bottom bit for imps and such to beat up. Imps reappear. They are worth 110 experience, making things easy when you get to level 11 or so. On level 17 I needed a refresh to beat Cerberus. "What was the rascal's last word? "Vandess" ? It seems to be an ominous sign. 5-11. DUNGEON 11 "A woman ghost speaks to the warrior in his dreams. She wants him to go to the dungeon." There are four green slimes in the UL, so take them out. At level 3, go down the side to get the speed ring, and use it. At level 4, take out the iron head 2N 2E 2S 2E of the weapon shop. At level 6, you can get the 1K gold. From the shop, 2N 4W 2S 2W 2S E*> S* E= S* E>. That avoids the tough monsters. At level 7, you can beat tarantulas etc. but it will take 'til level 11 to be able to beat a ghoul with reasonable confidence. From the 1K the critical fight is N> N= E> E>. Once past the ghoul, N> S> E= S* and buy a Strong Sword. Wait to buy armor as you can go N= N= W= N> N*> S*> S= E>* and the passage leads to the Unicorn Key. On the way back, buy the best armor you can. Back at the first ghoul you beat, S> S> W* S> N> W> S* to the DL. From the DL, go N= E= S> and that will lead you to the boss. Four Face: "Revenge is mine!" I won on level 15 with two refresh potions, but I probably would not have needed both if I'd remembered to get any sort of armor. "She was taken advantage of by a demon. The warrior can not forgive the demon." 5-12. DUNGEON 12 "A dying warrior is lying at the entrance of the dungeon. What is wrong?" At the branches go north twice then east. West at the next branch and W-N-W-N then after the green slime go 2N E= and get the defender. Use it. Keep fighting to get to level 4 and further W-N-W-N you will be able to go east to take out the goblin at level 4. Use the speed ring behind the goblin. W= S= E= E= N= gets you to go along the top. Hit the killer ant, and you can mess around here and back west until you have 200 gold, then go ES etc from the UL to get a long sword. Go top the top, 2D and E= N= E= N= S= E= S= E> S= W> to get to the iron head. E* 2S W* to avoid the gremlin and now you can work your way down. At the second green slime E> for good experience, N> S>. At L9, go east from the third slime and rip up the pumpkinhead for a refresh. Back up, 2S 4E W> W> to get around the troll. W*> S> W> gets you to a new shop. You may not have the money to get what you really want, so just try to fight ironheads until you have 1100 gold, at which time you can sell the long sword and get a strong sword. At level 12 you can beat a troll, so you can move back to the west area and poke around there. This will help you move further along when you want/need to, too. From the shop, S> S> W> S> S> and the path winds. Then you have a ghoul to hack to the south. Follow the path. Good fights in the dead end east but N> S> E> S> E= S>* N* is where the unicorn key is at. S= W> E> for warrior armor and S> W> N*> for the boss. You shouldn't need to pick up any more levels but backtrack a bit and you will find some additional gremlins and such to get a few more levels. "I will not spare you." says the Chimera. But I was able to knock it off without a refresh at level 17. "What's going on? There are too many strange incidents in this kingdom." 5-13. DUNGEON 13 "The dead are coming back to life and entering the dungeon. The warrior follows them." This level really isn't too tough to conceptualize. It's almost completely symmetrical. The only part which can't be symmetrical, the unicorn key, has some super armor on the other side. The main big new thing is that you have an armor superstore, where you can spend the 5K you find near the DL and DR corners. Along the way you should pick up enough experience to trash the enemy, which requires you to get to maybe level 16. You should be able to start off well enough S W N W* gets you a level, then from the UL corner, E= D= E= gets you a healing potion. You may need to beat up a few enemies before getting to level 3 and then E* S E* and clear out that area(minus the goblin) to get more experience and gold. Since you can beat sorcerers at level 3, this should be lucrative. It's a bit tough to get to the armory right away with the giant fly guarding it but if you manage to go, from the UL, S* E* S= W= W= S you should be able to beat the killer wolf when at level 5. Get the speed ring behind it and use it so you can crush enemies easily. W N E* N= W= N= E= N= E= and(assuming L7 to beat the fly--L8 if you're not feeling lucky) and buy the long sword and, if you have the money, wooden armor. Okay, now you can go down the left. Where you managed to trash the wolf before, go W= again and S* to kill the sorceror, and now make a detour for the Unicorn Key. E*> beat the falcon(you should be L8/9 by now) E> E> E> and you will get the unicorn key past the iron head. Work your way back past the falcon and now S= E> W= S> and this winding around may take a while but eventually you can go S> and that leads to the poison toad and, behind it, 3000 gold. Go back W and 2N and keep going east across the screen. There will be a dead end with a fire snake. You might as well pick up the experience. Go 2W N> and E* to take out the poison toads--they won't be back--and if you want, detour for the iron heads, which are easy experience, before proceeding right. If you are at level 11 or close, you can level up and smack the trolls down. As usual the iron heads and fire snakes regenerate but the nastier monsters don't, so use that to your advantage. Remember that because the right mirrors the left, you have the same monsters to face and tackle: poison toad in the DR(2K) and then go opposite the unicorn key(from DR, N*> W= N> N* W> W> W> W> S>) and get the dragon armor in the chest. N= E= S> S> E> and get the gradius or, if you have the money, the flame sword at 7000, but don't drag things out to get it. Don't worry about the armor--enemies can't hit what you have. Note that if you don't quite have enough, the iron head should work out as should other enemies nearby. There's also a defender to the NE that you can sell for gold. You don't really need the extra protection, and between leveling up for the 500 you'd get otherwise and the time saved selling it, I go for option two. I'll refer you to the map for that one. But back in the center you can alternate betwen the iron heads and fire snakes as they recharge. When you are level 14 it is super easy with a good weapon, so you don't really need to build up too much for the boss fight with the bogey. Bogey: "The dead are my life." "Someone is using magic in the dungeon. Where can he be?" 5-14. DUNGEON 14 "The warrior accepts a demon's challenge and goes to the dungeon." Having an invisible man to whomp on is nice, and you also have some imps you can take out when you're good enough. There are also three shops here and some very good treasure. You can follow the path to pick up your first level, and if you head west at the branch, there's another loop down with slimes you can kill. If you go east at the branch and go up and left, you'll run into the first shop. In general there's a lot of good stuff in the UL, and around level 4 you can fight past the killer spiders to get to the "other" store. But your first order of business is to get to level 6(the king spiders S= E> S= W of the entry work well once at L3) and kill the death crow, from the UL, E* S* E* S= W= S=. It is the only tough monster in your way. Now you will want to build up to 400 gold so you can get the broadsword from the "other" store under the killer spiders. Once you have that, W> N= E*> E> N> E= S= and now a detour for experience: E> N= E* and go S/W into a dead end with a 100 point invisible man. It recharges, so you can pick up some easy experience here, though you may have to wait, run into the man, and run back occasionally. The imps will still be out of reach as late as level 11 so you may want to go back to the old store and get some stone armor. Or, better yet, you can just continue with the quest. You can sneak by to get some good armor if you know the path. If you do get to level 12, clear out the imps before you start Another detour is 2S of the branch off to the invisible man. A gremlin is the main guy guarding and you will want to be sure to be at level 14 for that. S> and now W> W> W> S= E> gets you past the death fly to $5000. Retreat W> N= E> S> E= and go S> S*> S> E> S> for some really cool armor. Here you'll want to get ~6600 gold before continuing, as there's a shop next. E> N*> E= E= E= N> to hook around the imp--though if you need some gold you can bash through it. S= W> S> to the shop. You should have enough for a flame sword. On the way back you should be able to cut everyone up. If you want a buffer of a few levels, look on the map for a few gremlins to fight. Circle back to W of the giant leeches and go N> W*> W> S= W> W> S> E> N= for the unicorn key. Monsters should be no problem whatsoever now. You can detour S E if you want for a couple gremlins, or you can just finish the job. S* W* N> W= (S> gets two imps) N>. "Fighting gives my life." At level 18 I used 130 HP to beat Durahan. So I don't think you really need to advance too far to win. "As long as he has the will to fight, the demon will come back to life." 5-15. DUNGEON 15 "A friend lives in the dungeon with the demons What's wappening?" This is a blatantly symmetrical level and it even has a shield ring to start you off quickly, then some easy monsters. Which is a nice way to start things off for a bigger area. S= E= N> E= and you'll kill slimes to get to level 2. Go south and in each fork you get an item. Use the speed ring. Now you can go down the left edge and beat up a few goblins to raise your experience. N= N= from the bottom and E>* E> N= E= E= S= to get to the purple slime. At level 4 you should be able to take it. S= W= and take out the Invisible Man. This should get you enough gold to go to the shop(E= N* E= E= W*< W= S= W= S=) and get a long sword. Of course, you can just wait/move around a bunch too and keep beating him up to get a few levels. You can retreat and pick off a few monsters as you wait. Around level 7 you are able to beat the death crow to the south, then the poison toad below that when at level 9. S= W= S> N= W= S= E> gets you to the shop where you can buy some good stuff. 800 gold gets you a broad sword and stone armor. Now you can work E N E of the invisible man, win a fight, go back to him and keep working up. At level 10 I was able to trash the troll which guards one side from the other. Kill off the invisible man on the other side and W= S= E>. You might as well go into the UR corner and mirror what you did at the start to get a defender and a refresh. Now go down the right and the 2nd turn off from the bottom, go W= S= W= S= E> W= W= N= for the Unicorn Key. Retreat and S= W= S= (detour S for big exp) E> E= N> to get along the bottom. Then a Udou and then two necromancers--tougher than what you've seen before-- are in your way, then a basilisk up the center. There are three but the sides lead to dead ends. At level 14 it will be a knockdown drag out affair, but after that you have some mummies and then the final boss, the High Dark Elf. ("See my dark side.") At level 14 I needed 1 refresh to win, but it was close. Still, you have found two along the way. "He is controlled by the demons...the warrior's heart is gripped with sorrow for his old friend." 5-16. DUNGEON 16 "The warrior is suddenly attacked by the townspeople and driven into the dungeon." Mess around in the UL until you can buy a long sword. You can go, from the store, W= N= E*> E= N> to get the refresh potion behind the sorcerer and then sell that to speed things up if you want. Or you can bag the cash for later. From the armory, N= E>* E= S> E> S> and you have navigated around the tough Wilohwisp. Call where you are point 1. Your next goal is to get the shield ring in the DL. You'll get some nice gold along the way. You'll need to be level 9 first to get by the harpy and later the ghoul(10 to make sure.) E> E= E> E* N> W*> W= S= will get you to the second armor shop where you can buy better weapons, but this is probably for later reference as it is best to save up. S> E> W*> and the detour to the west (W> W> etc.) can get some useful experience and gold if you want. You may need it to defeat the pumpkinhead that is S> S> S= before you can go S> S= W> W*> and you will find a speed ring at the end of the loop. If you want to get to level 11/12 before continuing, or you need some last minute level build up, there is a dead-end passage west with an ironhead, then S> S* from there leads to 2 more iron heads(N and E= S>) and some enemies beyond that to beat up. Just avoid the lamia, lessser demon and ebony chair. Now you can go back to point 1 and detour for the extra armor if you need to. This is the best you can do, so feel free to look around and beat up whatever monsters are in the vicinity. If you need more gold, and you are at level 11, then the imp by the shop recharges and will give you enough experience. You should also be good enough to beat the wilohwisp. You can even tackle the lamia and after you get the strong sword at 1200, run by them again. Now at point 1 S> E> W= W= S> E= N> E= and you should be able to defeat the wilohwisp with no problems. N> N> N= W= S> W= N= E= for the unicorn key, then back to the intersection. There's nothing in the NE and the fights are even trivial. Though you may want to beat up the banshee and ghoul to affirm you can. You should be around level 13 for the next bit. Now from the wilohwisp intersection, W>* W> S= E>* E>* and you should get through a gremlin and be in front of a banshee. Defeat it and E= S* E= S*> S= E> E=(have 150+ HP for the lesser demon and beat up smaller monsters til you can advance a level if you don't) and E> leads to the boss fight. You may not be ready yet, though. Clear out the near loops, then go face the vampire. I was able to beat him with 1 refresh potion and at level 16. I still had nearly all of my hit points. So if you get to level 18 by trawling for imps, this should be a pretty easy fight. There's also some treasure along the bottom--2k gold--but nowhere really to spend it. Vampire: "I take your life!" Ending: "The vampire is defeated and the people are once again their former selves." 5-17. DUNGEON 17 "The clang of iron coming from the dungeon stops. The warrior goes to investigate." This dungeon has a lot of grids and as such is not too badly complex to navigate. You may get killed by the second blue slime you face, but oh well. There is a shop off to the right of your initial area and afer killing off a bunch of blue slimes, goblins and skeletons in the area, get the long sword. Go along the top and to the east when you are level 6, or close to it, and thrash the shaman E* S> E>* of the top. Behind the fire snake, go up to beat an invisible man(the 16 experience kind.) Now turn south and go E+ E= and south is $300. N= W* south past the shaman, then turn east to get a defender. Putz around until you have 800 gold. Selling the defender gets you 500 and makes things quicker, but I don't recommend it as the boss(Iron Golem) does a lot of damage. In fact, I would recommend building up to level 12/13 and spending your excess cash on refreshes. But the invisible men, shamen and fire snakes should make it easy enough. Once you get the broad sword and stone armor, go back to the start in the UL and go S down the trail that winds back W S E N E, then go south. Or you can go, from UL of the grid, E= S*> S> S> S> W* N= N=(N is a banshee) E* N> N> W< W< N<(saber tooth tiger--be level 12 for this) N< W< W< S< S< W< W= S=. (E to beat up imp) W> S= W> W> S= W> S= E* for the unicorn key. There are no really big fights in your way. W= N> E= E= N*> E= N>*. Iron Golem: "I cannot be beaten!" But he can, if you are level 16 and have 2-3 refreshes. You should use a refresh when your hit points drop below 60, immediately. "Who made the iron golem? And why?" 5-18. DUNGEON 18 "The warrior accepts the 'vandess' warrior's challenge and goes into the dungeon." This level has a lot of easy monsters early on and, as such, it cannot be considered one of the tougher ones in level 4. It might not even be a medal winner if you know what I mean. At least 'til the end bit. For a change of pace you start in the UR. There are some tough monsters nearby but you can slash through some green and red slimes along the top to build up to level 3 or so. Down one passage is an iron head and an invisible man after that. That's a good place to go to pump yourself up, though you may want to tackle the king spider in the column right of the iron head, then S> S> to the invisible man for a bit before you nail the iron head. You can wedge yourself between the iron head and the invisible man, with detours to kill sorceres and king spiders, to build up. You probably need only 400 gold to start, in order to get the broad sword, but if you have a lazy 30 minutes you might as well build up to 800 and the better armor. All of this should allow you to get enough gold to head left along the top, S= E* S= W= S* W*> W= N* E> E= N= W= and up at the purple slime, then see the armory to the east. This is the next place to go. Get the battle axe then W= S= E*> S*> S= E= and you are at a big junction. The next big fight is with a Hawk. It should not be too tough at level 8. S= W> E> W> to get past the necromancer, then E= and N* and S* will get you fights with iron heads. N* E> E= gets you to another shop. It sells a strong sword and silwer armor. You have enough monsters around--killer wolves and iron heads and necromancers-- to build up for a while. Around level 12 you can fight the gremlin, and all this should give enough gold that you get the strong sword too. Getting the strong sword makes a mockery out of several monsters that used to be tough. The gremlin to the east for starters. Go W= N< S> W= S= E*> past the hawk, E*> past the troll, E*> and then E=. You can detour to knock out even fire elementals if you want. However the hell guarders ahead are another brand of monster entirely so you may just wish to knock out enemies until you are level 15 or so(ogres and trolls should be easy,) and If you want you can go back to get the silwer armor. More ironheads on the way of course. In fact you will want to because the shaman is the boss type, very offensive minded. The giant fly regenerates nearby as does the purple slime, but the ironheads are still the ones to appear consistently. Then attack the shaman to the east and get the unicorn key (E S). At level 14 it took a while to beat a hell guarder but he could not damage me. So build up to level 18 or so. Then you can go face the enemy. Buy a few refreshes if you have to, but you probably won't need to. Guarder Master: "I am a warrior!" If you are at level 19 you may not need a refresh. The Guarder Master will take less time to defeat than Hell Guarders because so much more damage is done each round, by and to you. Well, it's a confusing bit the right way around. "Who was the "Vandess" Warrior? The warrior's mind is filled with questions. 5-19. DUNGEON 19 "The next 'Vandess" Warrior calls the warrior." Let's first take a look at the outline of the game before we can get going. Basically, in this and the last two levels, you can break the big maze down into rectangular areas which may or may not be useful to your quest. Run through the ones that are. Map below not to scale. 1111-22222222-4444 1111 22222222 4444 1111 22222222-4444 1111 | 2222 4444 1111 333 2222 | 1111 333 2222 5555 11 333 2222 5555 11 33333 5555 11 33333 aa 555555 11 33 aa 55555| aa 55 | 6 9999-----aa 55 666 9999 aa 55 666 9999 aa 55 666 9999 666 9999-----------666 9999 | 9999 888 777777777 9999 888 777777777 9999-888-777777777 You start off in the left center here. There are a few blue slimes around and, as before, you may get killed by the first one, but so what. You can go up a bit to kill a few killer bees and then north of the starting square, turn right and N> and E to kill a sorcerer, then W*> N< N= W= S= S= E= gets you to the armory, but you probably don't have enough to buy what you want yet. So just hack at everyone and everything with your long sword. There's more or less a dead end to the east. Once you can afford the long sword, buy it and work your way north. W= N*> N= W*> E= N= E> N= W= N= E= E= N> E* N= N= E= S= E>*(past a tarantula) and now you probably want to ignore the area to the south, because it has an armory you can't quite afford yet. W> E= S> E> S> E> S= E*> and an invisible man is to the east. Mop him up and work this corridor a bit to gain points. Then W* N= N= E> W> and the only really tough fight will be the Hell Tiger guarding near the end of the corridor. You may need to go back and buy a better weapon(i.e. a strong sword) to defeat it. It's worth leveling up to get it because once you do, you will get the Elfin Armor behind. This should make you nearly impervious to anything. E> E*> from area 2 to 4 and E> past the first fire snake. Go S E S* W*> E*> S= W*> S= W= W= S=> S= S= S= E*> E>(past an imp, zigzag) E= S= W>(more of this) and now S> and E>(Beelzebub is a tough fight but worth it--you may have to get to level 20 for this or even go E= N> S*> N*> to buy better stuff first. Just try to beat him, test the waters with each new level and return.) and once by Beelzebub, E= S*> S* to get the Death Thunder. With this you can whomp on anyone by using it before each attack. That includes the boss man. N*> W* S= W*> W= N*> N= N= N= E= and call this point 1. From point 1, get the Unicorn Key. N> S= S= S= S=(intersection with the shaman) E= S> S*> and whip everyone in the way. They shouldn't be too bad. Then retreat. E*> N> E> N> to the boss and take him out. The Death Thunder should take him down pretty quickly. I needed 3 blows on level 15. Cyclops: "This is your last moment!" "How long is the fighting continued? The warrior feels somewhat uneasy. 5-20. DUNGEON 20 "A creepy red dragon is protecting "Vandess". The warrior must fight it." This dungeon looks big at 82x116 but there is a big lower corner chunk(about 1/5 of the board) which you wind up not using. And the items you find will really help you on your way. 11111 2222 6666-77777 11111 2222 6666 77777 11111 2222 6666 77777 11111 2222 6666 77777 11111 2 22 6666 77777 | 2 22 6666 77777 2222222 22 6666 77777 22222 22 6666 77777 2222 6666 77777 2222222 | 6666 77777 2222222 33 6666 77777 | 33 6666 77777 4444444 33 6666 77777 4444444 33 6666 | 4444444-33 6666 88888 4444444 33-6666 88888 | 5555555 5555555 5555555 5555555 5555555 5555555 You are pretty much blocked in by goblins to start, so just bash around and kill as many slimes as you can. Once you are at level 4, you can start taking out goblins. The best ones to take out are(from the UL) to the right along the top and you can just muck around until you are at level 5, and once that happens, go down the left side from the UL and take out the Iron Head. You have some monsters behind it and the goal is to get to the Defender. The Queen Bee guarding it should not be a problem. I advise using the defender, which allows you to last out some battles. Get to level 9. Buy a longsword if you can. Then be sure you can clear a way to the new shops--from the ironhead on the left edge, S> W> E> and you will fight two necromancers who may be tricky. If you can buy a broadsword, get it. Otherwise, continue on your way S> N> E> S*> and you should encounter a purple slime here. E> N> E> to another purple slime, then E> E> up the tunnel, detouring west to get the defender. You should wind up fighting a queen bee and falcon and you'll run into an ogre. E> E> and W is $1000. Get it. N> E> E> W> and E> S> leads to another shop. You can pick up the next best weapon here, or you can continue on. W> E= N= E+ S*> S> leads back north to a dead end with 500 gold. S> W> S= and $1000 is west, then S= and a speed ring, which you'll want to use, is west. There are some monsters further into the maze but there's nothing game-critical, so start moving backwards. Go down the long passage with the defender to the side and S= and continually head south when you can. 2 falcons, then W is a troll and invisible man, well worth it. S*> S= W> S= and now you should have a passage to the west. W S> S W= W= N= E> for the Crystal Orb, which is very valuable in critical fights. Now you can just retreat if you want or build up to level 20 or so. From the crystal orb you can get an energy blast which you can sell for money or just use on tough monsters. S> E= S*> S> W= S> N> W= S> N= W= N* W> E*. Back east of the crystal orb, retracing your steps and now S*> E*> E> N> E* S= S= and face the fire lizard. Use the crystal orb before attacking it, and it'll go down quickly. Without the orb, the fight is nearly impossible. With it, it takes three times. Don't use the orb whenever, as I believe you have limited uses. N= E= N> N> E> N= W> S=(use the orb here to get to the armory) and buy a few refreshes if you are very low--the game stopped recharging for me and I think it was because of the Devil Blade I am about to show you how to pick up, but maybe it was just getting to level 25. E> W> N*> E> S> for another refresh. E> E> N*> N> N* should get you to the top. E* beats some easy monsters then 6S W* avoids the Amadeuses. S> W> and again use the orb on the wraith. Get the Unicorn Key. W> S> S= W> W= for the Devil Blade, which is much beter than whatever you have. E= S> N= W= N til you can go west, then S*> to the T-intersection where you go E, N= N= W= for the Elfin Armor. You're ready to whip the boss now. E= S>* W> S* E* S*> N> W> S> N= N= and the boss is east, a red dragon. Use the Crystal Orb mercilessly on him. Red Dragon: "I am all powerful!" "What a huge dungeon! Without thinking the warrior sits down and sighs." 5-21. DUNGEON 21 "At the King's request the Warrior enters a dungeon no one has been in. The warrior fights for his life against the mightiest demon there." Wowzers, Penny! Another huge dungeon. But again if you look at the map you'll notice the big UL chunk that is missing, which is a relief to say the least. Also, if you inspect the graphic map carefully, you'll note that the areas can be cordoned off into rough rectangles. Maybe it was all too much for the game designers to keep in their heads, too. 111-22 4444 111-22 4444 111 22 4444 111 22 4444 111 22 4444 22/ 333-22-5555 333 22 5555 333 | 5555 333 66 5555 66 5555 777 66 5555 777 66 777-66 | 66-8888 888 8888 888 dddd cccc-888-99-aaaa dddd cccc 99 aaaa dddd-cccc bbb aaaa dddd cccc bbbbbb aaaa dddd cccc-bbbbbb-aaaa The usual trashing enemies nearby until you can buy a longsword works here. Once you get to level 4, beat up a few goblins, then go down the left side to pick off an Ironhead every so often. Once at level 5 you can pick off the goblins W N E of the iron head and even go along the east side to the south to get the refresh potion. There's another iron head below them. That takes care of area 1. Go back up and, from the iron head, W N* E*> E>* E> E* and you should be able to go down a long corridor with lots of death spiders. You can keep running up and down it to pile up experience and gold, then alternate that with going off to the right to pick off iron heads. You can pick up a few levels and even visit the shop south of the iron heads, although don't worry too much if you can't buy anything. You don't really need levels for the next bit, but it can't hurt. Down the west corridor you'll see a wilohwisp. Turn east before you get to it(there's not much in area 3) and go E S> E>* E= to the purple slime(OK, beat up the iron head first. Old habits die hard.) Now you have a long but harmless trek to get 10000 gold in area 4. N> E> N>* N>* and you should be at the top now. S*> E*> S*> S> S> N> S= E*> W* N> and behind a sorcerer is 10000 gold. Don't spend it all in one place, but feel free to go back to the store and buy the best weapon and armor you can find. You'll eventually be able to find even better stuff for free, but you'll probably need decent weapons and armor to get there in the first place. For this, go into level 5. You'll probably not need any great items for this, but still to be sure you might want to go pick up the best you can from the 2-shop behind the iron heads. A purple slime guards the 2-4-5 area nexus and after you kill it, E S E> S> and get past the tough necromancer to get to the next shop. Splurge on a Jared and King Armor. There's a speed ring there, but you'll be finding one soon enough, so why waste the money? Back N> W> N= W= and now detour for a defender--S= W>* S= W= S> and you will see a chest with a defender. Take and use it. W> E= S= past the iron head, E*> and S= W= and you now have a speed ring. Now I think it is worth it to try to build up your character. Get to level 14 or so and buy 6 refreshes from the #2 shop in the process. This is very important because you want to get by the Amadeus in area 3, and you aren't strong enough to do so without healing(and you don't have a Salieri either, ba-dum-TSH.) Even with the power-ups I still needed 2-3 refreshes to win at level 14. Also I recommend leaving a spot open in case you find a defender/speed ring to sell, chucking any less valuable item. Otherwise you may have to walk around a bit more to get the 6000 required gold. You can also sell your unused refreshes for a loss to make 6000. You will always have more items you can get. There is a 3-shop there, where you can buy an Earth Shaker which will come in handy. In fact it should turbo charge the rest of your efforts. From the wilohwisp guarding the entry to 3, go W N*> W> E> S= W= S= W> for 2000, then S> N= E= N= W= S= W> for the store itself. Get an Earth Shaker. You probably won't have money for better armor. Then retreat to the shield ring location. From the speed ring, E= S*> W= W= S* W= S* E* S= and a big long W*> past a shaman and now you have a difficult choice--go in for the left side right away, or pick up more treasure to the right. I'd just go S= E* and get a bunch of refresh potions. That's all you need. Then W* N= and W= S= W= W= S= W* S= E> S= S> S= W* N> S> to get to the elfin armor. Use the Earth Shaker liberally. Then S> E> E* S= S= W* S= W= S>(avoid the red knight) N= W= N> W> E* W= N= E* W= and now the centipede blocks the way to the final bit. Detour for the unicorn key--N> E= S> S= W*>. Return. W> past the centipede, W> E= S> W* S= E> the long way down the spiral. Keep using the earth shaker. Have a refresh handy in case someone hits you for more than 1 damage and you get below 10 hit points. At level 24 I shut Tiamaht down to taking 100 hit points off me. "You are nothing!" "All the disasters in the kingdom have been caused by the demon king 'Vandess'." 5-22. DUNGEON 22 "Vandess" shouts "Fight me!" The warrior accepts the challenge and goes to "Vandess's" castle. This level is actually a good deal simpler than the previous three and definitely more orderly, and best of all, it gets easier as it goes on, because the corridors you go through are narrower. The main problem is, which way to go once you enter the whole area? 1111111111111111111 1 1 1 222222222222222 1 1 2 | 2 1 1 2 33333333333 2 1 1 2 3 3 2 1 1 2 3 4444444 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 | 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 555 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 555 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 555 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4444444 3 2 1 1 2 3 | 3 2 1 1 2 33333333333 2 1 1 2 2 1 1 222222222222222 1 1 | 1 1111111111111111111 There aren't really any long dead ends, so you can pretty much force your way through. This walkthrough will brush through level improvements, but you should know the soft monsters and who you can fight advantageously by now. The final boss is very tough and so you will need to make sure that you have a magic item to increase your attacking power. Otherwise you will only hit for 1 damage. Still, the idea behind the general level buildup is the same. The shorter way is the better. N= E= S> S= E> E= S*> W= S= W. gets you to the shop, though you may want to build up before tackling the queen bee and getting the long sword. Nothing terribly exciting is nearby, but you've built up before. E= S*> W= S* E>* S*> S* E= S*> and the death fly may be tricky but you should be able to go S S= E*(may need L9 for guarian) and past that is an iron head to build up on. W= S*> S= E= S*> S= W= N> and behind that ironhead is a moon jewel, nice for a bit of cash. W> E= and N= W= if you want to beat up the other iron head, otherwise E> S*> S= E*> W*(ironhead) E= S= W= N> S= W* for a shield ring. E= N= E> E= S* W= S= E*> S= W= and you can go up now to cash in at the new shop. You may wish to build up to the strong sword but whatever items you've found should help you--there's also an iron head tp the south along with other fun guys to take along. When ready to advance(level 14 or so, maybe you can afford armor soon too,) S* E>* E> E= N> E= N. You are then in the inner sanctum, sort of. W> N= for a star jewel, then you are forced back east. S= E> E> E= N> S= E= N> N> E> W*> E= N= and then behind the Udou is what you want, the Death Thunder. Once you get this, it is game set and match, and it's all over but the maze crawling. However, it is still fun to go S= W= N> N= E*> to get 10000 in gold. Now it really IS all over except maybe the purchasing. N> W*> N> N> N= W*> and there is a shop type 6. Buy a tomahawk and ghhost armor, as you should have the money from your fights and the items picked up. You don't need tip top stuff, just enough to blast through enemies a bit quicker. E= N= W= S= W= W= S> W= S= and you are in the second inner sanctum. It doesn't matter which way you go so let's go W*> W> W> to where you should look down and see a fire giant. S*> S= S= W= S> E= E> N> N= to the third inner sanctum. (Detour for grand master: N*> W= S= W= S= W*>) E> E> E= N*> N*> N= E= E= N=(detour W= N> for the crystal orb) N= N= (detour N*> W= E= S* W= for refresh and a speed ring) W=*> W= W= S* W= S= S= S= and now you are in the very inner sanctum. W= N= W> takes you back east. E= S*> gets the unicorn key. S> W*> gets you to the end fight where you can just blast away happily. Vandess: "Now you die!" with perpetual Death Thunder usage and the best armor/weapons I was able to beat Vandess on level 10(yes, I cheated.) So you should have no problem if you have death thunder. If you don't you'll probably just hit him for 1 damage for a long long time. But he'll do better and eventually kill you. "Vandess" is killed by the warrior and peace returns to the land. The warrior gets a rich reward and lives on happily. < END!! > 6. CHEATING Hey, as I figure, you can either cheat at this game, or cheat yourself out of time you could've been playing a better game. Editing the save state is not too bad and in fact the programs I wrote for it are accessible for anyone in an introductory C course, or anyone who understands about file IO streams. The best way to cheat is to increase your attack and defense indices, as those also increase with your level. Adding HPs is not so great as that may allow you to win a battle against a very tough opponent--if you drag it out for an hour. a974-a979 bytes of your name(01 = A, etc.) Bytes a97d/a97e = lo/hi byte for current HP Bytes a97f/a980 = lo/hi byte for max HP a981 = attack index, which increases with level(how?) and usage of speed ring(+4 one time) a983 = defense index, which increases with level(how?) and usage of defender(+4 one time) Bytes a987/a988 = lo/hi byte for gold Bytes a989/a98a = lo/hi byte for current experience Bytes a98b/a98c = lo/hi byte for next level experience Byte a98f=weapon 00=dagger 20 01=short spear 80 02=long sword 200 03=broad sword 400 04=strong sword 1200 05=gradius 4000 06=flame sword 7000 07=giant scythe 9000 08=laser blade 12000 09=dragon slayer 15000 0a=devil blade 0 0b=grand master 0 0c=short spear 80 0d=long spear 300 0e=pilum 3000 0f=jared 5000 10=javelin 8000 11=battle axe 500 12=viking axe 1600 13=tomahawk 6000 14=Bat pick 120 15=zagnal 700 16=light flail 900 17=heavy flail 2400 18=giant flail 13600 (note a bigger value isn't necessarily better. One other way to do things is to start at offset 1a674 and change every nonzero value up to 1dddd (also less than 0x72) to the invisible man value, i.e. 0x35. This makes the danger from monsters negligible and leaves you free to roam. Other board arrangement includes moving the boss square value(between 72 and 87 inclusive) to near where you are, and dropping the unicorn key(x91) or death thunder(x98) or sky armor(xa9) or Grand Master(xa1) near where you are.
